The Trump administration plans to raise pending tariffs on 0 billion in Chinese goods to 25% from 10%, a source familiar with discussions confirmed to CNN.The news was first reported by Bloomberg. The move, which is not finalized and could change, according to the source, comes as the United States and China remain locked in a trade war. Talks between US and Chinese officials have done little to ease tensions. The United States has already imposed 25% tariffs on Chinese goods worth billion. China immediately responded with its own tariffs on US goods worth billion.A second round of tariffs on products worth billion could take effect as soon as this week.US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer earlier this month ratcheted up tensions when he released a list of thousands of additional Chinese exports worth 0 billion that could face 10% tariffs after a public comment period. It included fruit and vegetables, handbags, refrigerators, rain jackets and baseball gloves. Those tariffs, which might now be steeper, could go into effect as soon as September. 1108

The UK has accused Syria and Russia of preventing independent chemical weapons experts from entering the city of Douma, hit by a suspected gas attack that Western leaders have blamed on the Syrian government.A fact-finding team from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) arrived in Syria on Saturday, the same day the US, UK and France carried out airstrikes against Syrian government targets in response to the April 7 attack in Douma. But by Monday, the team had still not been granted safe passage, according to the UK envoy to the OPCW, Peter Wilson. The US expressed concerns that Russia may have tampered with evidence at the site. The OPCW team is tasked with determining whether banned substances were used in the attack, a charge that both Syria and its most powerful ally, Russia, have vehemently denied.Syria's Deputy Foreign Minister Fayssal Mikdad said Monday his country was ready to facilitate the OPCW team in any way to carry out its mission, the state-run SANA news agency reported, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov did not respond directly to CNN's question on whether Russia had blocked the experts. Peskov said only that Russia was against "groundless" accusations about who was responsible for the attack.Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the OPCW team's arrival was hampered by the weekend air strikes, state media RIA Novosti reported. The suspected chemical attack is the latest issue to heighten tensions between Russia and Western powers. More than 100 Russian diplomats were expelled from more than 20 countries in March over the poisoning of a Russian ex-spy on British soil, which the UK and US has blamed on the Russian government. Russia denies the accusations.Russian officials last week claimed British intelligence agencies had helped stage the suspected chemical attack in Douma."Yet again, Russia is spreading conspiracy theories and misinformation designed to undermine the integrity of the OPCW's fact finding mission," Wilson said in a statement."A significant body of information, including intelligence, indicates the Syrian regime is responsible for this latest attack."The US envoy to the OPCW, Kenneth D. Ward, said he was concerned that Russia may have interfered with the site of the Douma attack."We are concerned they may have tampered with it with the intent of thwarting the efforts of the OPCW Fact Finding Mission to conduct an effective investigation. This raises serious questions about the ability of the (team) to do its job," he said in a statement Monday.Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said last week his country had sent experts to the site and found "no trace" of chemical weapons use. On Monday, he told the BBC's Hardtalk show that he guaranteed there had been no Russian tampering.Around 75 people, including children, were killed in the Douma assault, UK officials have said, while 500 people were treated in the attack's aftermath with symptoms consistent with chemical weapons exposure, the World Health Organization reported, citing its partners on the ground. The OPCW has recorded more than 390 allegations of chemical weapons use in Syria since its investigation began in 2014, Wilson said. 3222

The US House of Representatives passed a federal "right-to-try" bill Wednesday night, leaving many Americans wondering what the move could mean for their health and that of their loved ones. The bill, backed by President Donald Trump, would give terminally ill patients the right to seek drug treatments that remain in clinical trials and have passed phase one of the Food and Drug Administration's approval process, but they have not been fully approved by the FDA.The bill passed the House 267 to 149, after failing to pass last week. Now the legislation needs approval from the Senate.Right-to-try laws exist in 38 states -- Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington and Wyoming -- but this federal bill would introduce legislation across state lines. The central question, however, remains: Would a federal right-to-try bill help or hurt some of the country's most fragile patients? Here's what you need to know, according to experts on both sides of the legislation. 1320

The White House announced Friday that President Donald Trump intends to appoint Mehmet Oz, better known as Dr. Oz, to his council on sport, fitness and nutrition.Oz is well-known as a host of an eponymous television show on health and medical issues and, before that, for appearances on "The Oprah Winfey Show." But he has become a lightning rod for controversy for featuring what critics say is unscientific advice on his show.In 2015, a group of doctors criticized him harshly, saying he manifested "an egregious lack of integrity" in his TV and promotional work and called his faculty position at Columbia University unacceptable.Oz defended himself in a written statement at the time, saying, "I bring the public information that will help them on their path to be their best selves. We provide multiple points of view, including mine which is offered without conflict of interest."The-CNN-Wire 906

The Trump campaign has dropped a central part of its lawsuit that seeks to delay the certification of election results in Pennsylvania, the state which proved to be the tipping point for Joe Biden in clinching the presidency. On Sunday, the Trump campaign dropped a portion of a lawsuit that alleged that more than 600,000 mail-in and absentee ballots were processed without Republican poll-watchers present. The claim has been a central part of President Donald Trump's argument that the 2020 election has been beset by widespread voter fraud. The Trump campaign's lawsuit now only focuses on claims that Republicans were "illegally disadvantaged" because some voters in Democratic-leaning counties were afforded the ability to fix mistakes on their mail-in ballots, a process called "curing." The Washington Post reports that the issue would likely only affect a small number of votes.Ballot curing is a process that takes place in several states. According to The Associated Press, there is no provision in Pennsylvania state law that prevents counties from affording voters the opportunity to cure ballots.Biden currently holds a lead of about 70,000 votes over Trump, with nearly all of the votes counted.Despite his campaign's altered lawsuit, Trump on Sunday continued to claim on Twitter — without providing evidence — that poll watchers "were thrown out of vote counting rooms in many of our States."Late Sunday evening, Trump tweeted, "I WON THE ELECTION!" a claim that quickly prompted Twitter to add a clarification to his message clarifying that "official sources have called this election differently." 1622
