(AP) - A man who police say was run over with a lawn mower while trying to kill his son with a chainsaw has had to have his leg amputated.The Bristol Herald Courier reports that a warrant for 76-year-old Douglas Ferguson couldn't be served until Tuesday because of the severity of his injuries.According to a Sullivan County Sheriff's Office release, officers called to a home June 28 found Ferguson bleeding from his leg and head. A preliminary investigation indicated he had tried to attack his son with a running chainsaw while he son mowed the yard.Detectives say the father and son had an ongoing feud.Ferguson is charged with attempted second-degree murder and violating probation. Beyond the beaches of the world, lies the potential for oceans of energy."I'm very excited about this because it's a very renewable energy-based technology,” said Professor Bruce Logan of Penn State University.Logan and university researchers recently created a device that removes salt from seawater in a cheaper way, allowing that water to then be used to create a renewable form of hydrogen fuel.“There's a lot of interest in renewable hydrogen,” Logan said. “Most of the hydrogen made today is made from fossil fuels, and so, we're interested in making that hydrogen from water.”That involves splitting water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen. The problem? Seawater also has salt, which needs to be removed first and that’s expensive to do.However, the “seawater electrolyzer” that Logan and his team worked on takes care of that issue cheaply by using a special membrane and without requiring expensive desalination plants. The findings were recently published in the Journal of Energy and Environmental Science.“Hydrogen is a great fuel,” he said. “It's been examined as a fuel for many decades now.”About 97 percent of all the water on earth is in the ocean, which means if it could be used efficiently to make hydrogen fuel, it could be a game-changer.“As we look to de-carbonize our fossil fuel infrastructure, we also can use it primarily for heavy-duty vehicles,” Logan said. “Airbus is looking to actually make airplanes that fly on hydrogen.”For now, though, their device would need to be scaled-up to a much larger version.“There are many nations and companies and nations across the world looking to do this. BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A Bloomington, Ind. man is accused of holding a toddler under hot water as a punishment after the child soiled his diaper, causing severe burns.The investigation began on November 24, after the 2-year-old boy was transported to Riley Hospital for Children to be treated for multiple severe burns and other injuries.According to court documents, Dennis Tannen, 29, was watching his girlfriend’s son while she was at work when the child was burned.Tannen initially told police that he had put the child in the bathtub and left him for “10 seconds” and when he came back the child had turned on the hot water, burning himself.The child's mother said Tannen called her and she rushed home and found him “outside smoking a cigarette.” She told police that her son had large burn marks on his face that looked like his skin was falling off when she first saw him. They took the child to IU Bloomington Hospital where he was later transported to Riley Hospital for Children.The child was treated for severe burns on his face, lips, buttocks, and genitals. Riley doctors told police that the child also had suspicious bruising on his chest and face and that the child’s injuries did not match up the couple's story. After multiple rounds of questioning, Tannen eventually admitted to police that he was waiting for a phone call when the toddler had a bowel movement in his diaper. He said he became agitated and went to wash the child off in the bathtub, turning the water on “full hot” and holding him under it to wash him off.Tannen told police he also put the child’s face under the same hot water to wash and that the child had slipped when he was holding him and he grabbed him, which caused the bruises on the child’s chest.Tannen was arrested and charged with felony neglect of a dependent. 1833

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Five people, including two elementary school students, were arrested after police investigated online threats made against another student. The Bloomington Police Department began investigating after a Fairview Elementary School representative notified police about a threatening Instagram video on Feb. 17. The video showed two students making threats and showing an AK-47-type weapon. One of the boys in the video made threats toward a female student and her brother. He said the gun was real and the two people were going to get "lit up," police say.In the investigation, police learned the threats were made after an argument about a dating relationship between the parties. Police then went to a house to locate the weapon in the video. At the house, a woman, Laquita S. Perry-Leverston, 33, went to the trunk of a car, where she retrieved the weapon and a pistol. Both were BB guns, police say. After a warrant was obtained, police began searching the house. One person in the house, a 17-year-old boy, told officers they weren't going to touch him, according to police. He began resisting and was arrested by officers. The 17-year-old was handcuffed and placed into a patrol vehicle, where he tried to kick out a window and threatened to kill an officer, police say.Two adults, Paris R. Leverston Sr., 37, and Laquita, became upset when the 17-year-old was arrested. According to Bloomington police, "Attempts were made to explain to her the reason why, but both adults continued to be loud and disruptive."
