SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County's economy is estimated to lose about .4 billion this year due to the pandemic.The new estimates according to SANDAG say the region saw about .8 billion in estimated wages in the first six months of the pandemic. About 176,000 workers were left unemployed because of COVID-19.Of those who lost their job, one in five female employees who lost their job worked in the education sector, and two in three workers ages 16 to 24 who list their jobs were in the tourism sector.About 50% of Hispanic workers who have lost their job worked in the tourism sector, as well. The tourism sector has been hit especially hard by pandemic-related closures, with many of San Diego's hotels and attractions closed much of the summer.But tourism is just one of the industries suffering during the pandemic. SANDAG says about 80% of job loss due to COVID-19 was either in the tourism, retail, or education industries.Ray Major, Chief Economist for SANDAG, said people from neighboring cities are still coming to the area for short trips, but the loss of large conventions and weddings is the aspect of tourism that has the most detrimental impact."You have people flying in from all over the world to go to conventions and they spend a lot of money here in the region at our local restaurants, at our local attractions and that has almost completely dried up," said Major.Major added that even when the economy does recover, conventions may never look the same."The technology is such that it has enabled these conventions to go virtual and they’re doing a pretty good job. So now you really have to question is a business going to undertake the expense of sending their people across the country," said Major.Before COVID-19, SANDAG estimated the region's economy to grow about 2% higher than 2019's Gross Regional Product. Now, the agency estimates the economy to contract about 4.7%, or .4 billion.SANDAG estimated that the economy may grow by about 4.2% in 2021, which could bring the economy back up to 2019 levels. Major said predictions are showing a slower complete recovery, adding it could take until 2023 or 2024 for a full economic recovery, assuming a vaccine is available around early 2021.Major also said some of the industries that aren't hurting as badly are innovation, government and construction. He said the focus moving forward should be on helping people in failing industries shift to jobs that are more successful."What we’re going to have to do is really find those and focus on re-training programs to help people change careers. It’s not that easy for people to switch from one industry to another," said Major. 2671

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County is nearing a move into the state's most restrictive tier of COVID-19 regulations.California launched a tier system in late August to measure COVID-19 risk within a county. San Diego County is now moving into the so-called purple tier, or widespread tier. Moving into that level would trigger stricter regulations, including the indoor closure of several businesses like restaurants and gyms.Some restaurant owners say if San Diego County moves into that tier and they are ordered to close their indoor dining areas, they will not follow the orders."We really want to push against it. There's no other way of making it nowadays," said Nick Kacha, the manager of Rudford's Restaurant in North Park.On Thursday, they put up a sign outside the restaurant that says, "Stand Up Small Business. #Defy""We're hoping other businesses will stand up with us and join the wave," Kacha said. He says nearly a dozen other businesses have said they will also stay open.Restaurant owner, Todd Brown, says he's still deciding what to do. He owns several restaurants, but the one is focused on is Bub's at the Beach in Pacific Beach. Brown says he is worried if they have to close again, they might close for good.Both businesses have followed the public health orders since the pandemic started. But for Brown, he says this time he is thinking it through."If we decide to stay open, it's not because we're trying to make a political statement. It's because we're trying to survive," he said. "You have the option of defying an order and staying open. How does that work? I have no idea, and it's not something I'm really interested in doing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Rising temperatures are increasing the wildfire danger in San Diego County. Monday morning's fires near Webster are the third group of fires sparked by homeless people in a matter of months. Neighbors in the area say they are getting nervous. Edna Wallis has been living in her home for three years. As the weather heats up, she says the brush behind her home becomes a safety hazard. "I start rinsing the patio when the days are extremely hot and dry," says Wallis. "We rinse it, but it's not much."Less than five minutes from her home, a fire sparked off Home Avenue early Monday morning. Among brush and a lot of trash, crews worked to put out the flames that started inside of a homeless encampment. "I'm nervous. I'm very nervous because I'm very close to this area," says Wallis. "All of the neighborhood is dry."There have been other fires in the area as well. A homeless camp caught fire near I-805 and I-15 last week. A blaze also sparked in the same area in March. This fire slightly backed up traffic as crews work to put the flames out that started inside of a tent. San Diego Fire and Rescue encourages everyone to report smoke or fires whenever you see them and do not assume some else will call. 1238

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans who stress about taking care of DMV-related chores will soon have another opportunity on Saturdays.The San Diego-Clairemont DMV office will begin offering Saturday hours on Sept. 8 for all services except behind-the-wheel testing.Appointments are not required for Saturdays but are still recommended.
