SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Carlsbad mother believes the social isolation created by the pandemic was one factor in the suicide attempt of her 11-year-old son.A photo shows Jessie, 11, playing tetherball outside her home two Thursdays ago. Hours after the photo was taken, his mother Tara says her son vomited.Soon after, an ambulance was rushing him to the hospital. In her kitchen cupboard was a nearly empty Costco-sized bottle of ibuprofen."It was a 500-pill bottle, and we estimate he took 400 pills," said Tara.At the hospital, Jesse couldn't breathe on his own. His kidneys failed, but doctors were able to save Jesse."It's a miracle, so thankful," said a tearful Tara.The grateful mother is now in search of answers. She talked to her son in the hospital."He said he didn't see that there was much worth living for. He felt like there were too many things stacked up against him," said Tara.Tara believes one of those things has been the social isolation caused by the pandemic. After his family moved, Jesse ended up after a new school in the fall. Tara says his old friends 'ghosted' him."I would encourage him to try to make friends in the neighborhood, and he'd say things like 'Why bother?'" said Tara.Tara thought he was just getting adjusted. Stan Colllins, a suicide prevention specialist with the San Diego County Suicide Prevention Council, says social isolation can cut kids off from the support they lean on to deal with stressors, big and small."We do have data to show there has been an increase in suicidal thoughts among youth," said Collins.In Jesse's case, those thoughts led to action. Tara says she's sharing her family's story in hopes of helping another family."Please lock up your medicaton ... Talk to your kids and see how they're doing. San Diego (KGTV) -- A 41-year-old woman suffered serious injuries Monday night when she was hit by an SUV while crossing the street in Pacific Beach.Police say the collision happened shortly before 10:40 p.m. on Grand Avenue west of Mission Bay Drive.A 24-year-old woman was driving a 2018 Jeep Cherokee eastbound of Grand Avenue while the victim was crossing the street southbound, then stepped off the center median and was struck by the Jeep. Paramedics took the victim to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with major injuries. She is expected to survive.The driver remained at the scene. 591

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - With regional intensive-care unit capacity still officially considered to be zero, Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday the regional stay-at-home order imposed by the state for the entirety of Southern California will almost assuredly be extended beyond next week's expiration date."We are likely, I think it's pretty self-evident, going to need to extend those regional dates," Newsom said. "... Based upon all the data and based upon all these trend lines, it is very likely based on those current trends that we'll need to extend that stay at home order, (which) you recall was a three-week order when we announced it."The regional stay-at-home order for the 11-county Southern California region took effect at 11:59 p.m. Dec. 6, and was originally set to end on Dec. 28. Newsom did not give an indication of exactly when a decision on extending the order will be made, or much long the order will remain in place.The Southern California region covers Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, Imperial, Inyo, Mono, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A beloved grandmother and community icon has been taken off life support, days after a hit-and-run crash in Logan Heights."Always really happy, an outgoing person," said Brianda Ramos.Maria Estrada Romero, 52, was a mother of five and a grandmother of five."Really sad. Family members rushed to the hospital after learning Estrada Romero had been struck by a hit-and-run driver. She was walking near Cesar Chavez Parkway, headed to a bus stop. According to police, a white Ford F-150 turning right onto Kearney Avenue climbed onto the sidewalk and hit her, before taking off."The driver never got out of the truck. Basically left her right there," said Ramos. The scene that first day at the hospital: a packed emergency room, as family, friends, and customers turned out."They loved her because she sold really good food," said Ramos.For more than a decade, Estrada Romero became well-known for selling tamales at parks and schools in Southcrest and Bay Terraces. Some of those customers heard about the crash and joined the family at the hospital."In a way I was happy to know they were here with us, supporting us," said Estrada Romero.On Sunday night, Estrada Romero was taken off life support. Today, a family searches for justice."Needs to turn himself in and pay ... pay for what he did to my mother," said Ramos.Police say the truck had a tinted back window and a white California sticker. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A child suffered severe injuries from a pit bull attack Monday in Logan Heights.The child was bitten on Irving Avenue around 2:30 p.m., according to the San Diego Police Department.Paramedics took the child to Rady Children’s Hospital to be treated for head lacerations and a possible puncture to the eye.20-month-old “Ookie” the pit bull was impounded by Animal Control officers. The dog was relinquished for euthanasia by its owner.According to the infant's adult sister, the 2-month-old has a cracked cranium and possibly a punctured eye socket. Witnesses say group was in the backyard when the dog licked then bit the infant's face. The owner of the dog reportedly had to pry the dog's jaw off the baby.  745
