As states begin to reopen, a new stage in the pandemic means elective surgeries are back on schedule.For 51-year-old mother of two Honaire Murillo, the pandemic delayed a much needed spinal surgery.“The shooting pains all the time and you know I had kids I have to run around. And so, it took about a year and I was so disappointed,” says Murillo.Twenty-four years ago, the aspiring pro-bodybuilder’s dreams were cut short when she was hit by a motorboat while visiting Puerto Rico on business.More than 20 surgeries later, Murillo needed another one.“The pain started coming back and so I knew I was going to have more surgery,” she says.Last week, doctors at Rush University Medical Center’s Midwest Orthopaedics in Chicago were able to get Murillo into surgery for a first-of-its-kind procedure.It was a minimally invasive spine surgery that utilized augmented reality.“The efficiency this provides because of the accuracy and the visualization of the spine is remarkable,” says Dr. Frank Phillips, the director and minimally invasive spinal surgeon at Rush who performed the procedure.A headset guidance system allowed Dr. Phillips to see Murillo’s spinal anatomy – essentially giving him X-ray vision.“That's exactly what it is,” says Dr. Phillips. “It really is X-ray vision. Except it's not just X-ray vision, you're actually seeing the real spine through the skin.”The CT scanned images are directly projected onto the surgeon’s retina and then superimposed right on top of the patient’s surgical area.“I was just blown away,” says Dr. Phillips. “The minute I put my headset on and looked down at the spine it was like that wow moment. I was like ‘this is crazy.’”Researchers say the FDA-cleared x-vision system could revolutionize the way surgeons perform complex procedures.“It's so accurate so precise the visualization so good you can do the surgery more efficiently which obviously translates into less anesthetic time and advantages to the patient,” says Phillips.For Murillo, who eventually went pro 15 years after her accident, this latest groundbreaking surgery has her thinking about another return to competition.“I'm still looking to see if I could comeback one more time. I'm not sure. But, yeah to me it's a dream.”Augmedics, the maker of the technology says it plans to explore the x-ray vision technology beyond just spinal surgery. 2365

As the US federal government was set to run out of funding at the end of Friday, the House of Representatives and Senate both passed H.J.Res. 107 on Friday, which funds the government through Sunday night. Without approval, the federal government would have entered a shutdown on Saturday.The measure passed through the House by a 320-60 margin. Less than an hour later, the Senate approved the bill by a voice vote. President Donald Trump then signed the bill late Friday night, officially keeping the government open this weekend.Without funding, essential federal government employees would work without pay. Other government employees would be told to stay home.The discussion on funding the government comes as House and Senate leaders are still working on a compromise on a stimulus package. Both sides have stated that legislators won’t leave Washington without approval of a pandemic relief package. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said congressional leaders will continue discussing a stimulus package over the weekend, but no votes will be called before Sunday afternoon. At least 100,000 small businesses have had to close permanently in the last nine months, according to data gathered by Yelp. Millions more have dealt with temporary closures and major losses in revenue.Now, many remaining small businesses are reliant on a strong holiday shopping season, and there’s finally some good news for these business owners and their employees.For example, at the Boston area small business called Boing Toy Shop, owner Kim Mitchell has been working overtime for the pasting nine months. She has had drastically change her business model.“In certain ways, I feel like although I am in the same physical footprint, I am almost running a completely different business,” said Mitchell.Since the start of the pandemic, Mitchell has had to shift more than half of her business online and added curbside pickup to keep her toy shop out of the red.“In certain ways, I almost feel like we are part store-front, part warehouse,” she added.However, in many ways, she still feels lucky to have some form of her business when so many other small businesses have had to close.“One of the first ones, unfortunately, was the store right across the street from me,” said Mitchell.The boutique clothing store across the street from Boing is just one of an estimated 27 percent of small businesses that have closed across the country, according to a Harvard University Project. And without a strong holiday season, even more permanent closures are feared.So, how has the holiday shopping season been so far for small businesses?“I had by far my most successful small business Saturday, which I did turn into small business weekend. I sort of stretched it,” said Mitchell. “There definitely is a sense, and I have a sense from my customers, that they are making a conscious decision to support their local businesses.”From Boing to stores around the country, consumers opened their wallets more than ever on Small Business Saturday. According to Adobe Analytics data, they spent a record .7 billion just online.“Smaller retailers have seen a 501 percent increase in revenue through the holiday season so far relative to a typical day in October,” said John Copeland with Adobe Analytics,” “From a percentage increase, small and medium-sized businesses are outperforming in terms of percentage gains.”From Adobe’s holiday shopping data to the Boston toy shops’ experience, it is clear consumers are conscious of how much mom and pop businesses are struggling and how important it is to help them and the workers they employ."It is really nice that, especially in a time like this, where we really need the community’s support in return. At least 285 U.S. children have developed a serious inflammatory condition linked to the coronavirus and while most recovered, the potential for long-term or permanent damage is unknown, two new studies suggest.The papers, published online Monday in the New England Journal of Medicine, provide the fullest report yet on the condition.The condition is known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children. It is considered uncommon and deaths are rare; six children died among the 285 in the new studies.Including cases in Europe, where it was first reported, about 1,000 children worldwide have been affected, a journal editorial said.The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s case definition includes current or recent COVID-19 infection or exposure to the virus; a fever of at least 100.4 for at least 24 hours; severe illness requiring hospitalization; inflammatory markers in blood tests, and evidence of problems affecting at least two organs that could include the heart, kidneys, lungs, skin or other nervous system.Digestive symptoms including nausea and diarrhea are common. Some children may have symptoms resembling Kawasaki disease, a rare condition in children that can cause swelling and heart problems.At least 35 states have had cases, and they seem to crop up a few weeks after local COVID-19 activity peaks, said Dr. Adrienne Randolph of Boston Children’s Hospital. She is a lead researcher for a multistate study that includes CDC scientists. The second paper involved 99 children in New York state, where the first U.S. cases occurred.Combined, the papers show 285 cases from March thru mid to late May but Randolph said additional U.S. children have been diagnosed in June.Most had current or recent COVID-19 infections but had previously been healthy.About 80% of children in the multistate study had heart-related problems, which included coronary aneurysms — a bulge in a heart artery that can be fatal.“Those need to be followed up,” Randolph said. “This is a life-threatening concern for a lot of patients.”Most affected children had no other health condition but about 30% were obese. The condition also appears to disproportionately affect Latino and Black children and boys.The average age was 8 years old.
