CLEVELAND — A 75-year-old USA Triathlon participant pulled from the water by a U.S. Coast Guard boat patrolling Lake Erie on Saturday morning has died, authorities have confirmed.The unresponsive man was spotted in the water by the Coast Guard near the Edgewater Marina in Cleveland around 8 a.m. Crews retrieved the man and performed CPR on him. The victim was then transported to a nearby hospital but later died, authorities said.The man was identified as Jim Hix, of Claremore, Oklahoma. Hix died while competing in the swimming portion of the Olympic-distance race, officials said.“Our sport lost a member of its beloved community and we extend our heartfelt condolences to Jim’s wife, Ann, his family and friends,” said USA Triathlon CEO Rocky Harris. “As one of the nation’s top multisport athletes in his age group, Jim and USA Triathlon shared a close relationship and his passing is particularly difficult.”According to USA Triathlon officials, Hix was the 2017 USA Triathlon Duathlon National Champion in his age group.  1084

Community Health Centers that care for hundreds of thousands of low-income San Diegans are bracing for deep cuts. Congress has to act by Sept. 30 to maintain the funds to the centers, or services will start to decrease."This conversation is, do you have a doctor when you need one, who will see you?" said Vernita Todd, Vice President of Health Center Partners of Southern California, an association of 17 health centers in San Diego, Imperial and Riverside counties. The centers are concerned about million of federal money that Congress has yet to renew. The money goes to lower the cost of services like primary care, vaccinations, cancer screenings and physicals. It can help turn a visit that would normally cost 0 into a visit. "If they can't afford it, does that mean they'll forego treatment? Will they forego going to the doctor? Will they skip vaccinations for their children?" Todd said. Earlier this month, Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-NY, introduced a bill to continue the funding for community health centers. It has 13 bipartisan supporters. Her spokesman says she's exploring different ways to move the legislation forward. Todd says she's not concerned the bill wouldn't pass. She just wants it to come up for a vote. But she's worried Congress isn't paying attention to the health center needs because it's focused on issues like Hurricane recovery, repealing the Affordable Care Act, and Immigration. She says the centers would start taking hits Oct. 1, when money for a program that essentially gets doctors to health centers dries up.Then, on Jan. 1, they would lose the biggest lump sum, which could lead to layoffs, closures, and fewer services. There are six San Diego health center locations, including City Heights, San Ysidro, and Vista. Clean air can feel hard to find right now.The American Lung Association is working help though, by supporting the production of electric cars.The association wants every car to be electric by 2050 and says the move could save thousands of lives as well as billions of dollars.“We know that air pollution is still a significant health threat,” said Paul Billings, Senior VP of Advocacy at the American Lung Association. “We know that air pollution makes respiratory infections worse and we know that climate change is impacting everyone's health today.”The association’s new report also calls for less coal power and more wind and solar. To get to their goal, they want people to learn more about electric cars.“People have range anxiety. They are afraid they're not going to be able to get as far as they need to go, but today's electric cars can go 300 miles per charge. The average daily miles a consumer drives is around 40 or 50 miles, so you would only need to recharge maybe once, twice a week,” said Billings.The association says auto and policy makers need to do a better job of advertising and selling these vehicles. They want to see more incentives to buy, and more charging infrastructure.A review of more than 700 scientific studies found traffic pollution causes asthma attacks and impairs lung function. The America Lung Association says reducing emissions by 2050 could prevent 93,000 asthma attacks.They say it could create a fairer world when it comes to health, since communities of color are more likely to live closer to major pollution sources. 1574

Costco says they are no longer selling their half-sheet cakes at U.S. clubs.In a statement to E.W. Scripps, the company said they have no immediate plans to bring them back."We are focusing on our smaller 10" white and 10" chocolate cakes that seem to be resonating with our members," the company said in the statement.According to Bloomberg, free samples returned to 30 stores across 16 states.
