SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Unified School District and School Board President Kevin Beiser are holding a news conference Wednesday to discuss student safety in light of the Parkland shootings.The school officials will explain the district's plan to address the nationwide student-led walkout to protest government inaction to curb gun violence. President Beiser will also discuss a resolution he brought forth at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting demanding action from state and federal officials to reduce access to certain firearms. During the news conference, officials asked lawmakers in Sacramento to implement a 10 percent tax on firearms in California to help fund school safety programs. Watch the news conference in the player below:  785

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sockers announced Saturday that former team and North American Soccer League executive Jack Daley has died.Daley, 82, died on March 7 at his San Diego home, the team said. A cause of death was not immediately released.From 1981 to 1984, Daley was a managing partner for the Sockers, and prior to that, general manager of the Toronto Metros from 1971 to 1973 and then NASL Seattle Sounders from 1974 to 1981.During his time in Seattle, he helped the team to its first two Soccer Bowl championship games and iconic players to the city, according to the Seattle Times. He's credited with helping cement the Sounders as a household name in Seattle, before the league folded. The Sounders name would be adopted as Seattle's Major League Soccer expansion team in 2007. 803

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The register sex offender accused of kidnapping and raping a three-year-old Oak Park girl pleaded not guilty to five felony counts Wednesday. Francisco "Freddy" Diaz now faces up to life in prison if convicted. Diaz is being held without bail. The young girl’s father, Silvester Soltero, says he was working on his car when his neighbor broke into a bedroom window, grabbing his sleeping daughter.Soltero says Diaz’ mother brought his daughter home, but she wasn’t wearing any pants. Soltero said when he asked his daughter what happened, she told him the man touched her private parts.RELATED: Man arrested after three-year-old says she was kidnapped and touchedWhen the father asked who the man was, Soltero said his daughter pointed to Diaz. When the father approached Diaz, Soltero said he became hostile, even threatening to kill him if he snitched.The two men then started fighting when Diaz reportedly tried to poke Soltero in the eye with a fork. After he ran off, San Diego Police caught Diaz a short distance away. After his arrest, Soltero learned his neighbor was a registered sex offender.“They should have told me, they should have told me I was living next to a pedophile, If I had known I wouldn’t have brought my daughter around here, there’s no way in hell," he said.Diaz was convicted in 2006 for molesting three girls on the playground near Oak Park Elementary School, right across the street from his mother’s house. Diaz was sentenced to eight years in prison, in part because he already had a criminal history. In 2000, Diaz was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon and making a terrorist threat.San Diego Police say Diaz was in full compliance with the terms of Megan's Law. He is required to check in with police every year and he does so, said Lt. Jason Weeden.Because Diaz' child molestation convictions were misdemeanors, he doesn't have to steer clear of schools and playgrounds. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department is making it easier for residents to receive — at times, indiscernible — messages issued by the department's helicopters.The free service will allow residents to receive a text of the message being issued by deputies by texting "Hello" to 858-866-4356 (HELO). Typically, the department uses its ASTREA helicopter loudspeakers to announce searches for missing persons or suspects, as well as during emergency situations like SWAT standoffs, disasters, shelter in place advisories, or crowd management.But, at times, though messages may be difficult to understand.The service is not automated, meaning users will have to send a text when they want to receive the message being issued in their area. And while the service is free from the department, standard text messaging rates may apply depending on phone plans.The department's text service only applies to SDSO patrol areas and is separate from the San Diego Police Department, which began issuing their helicopter alerts separately on the Nextdoor app and Twitter in 2015."If there is more than one active broadcast at any given time, you have the option to choose the message that impacts your location. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This week, thousands of letters, pictures, and cards from local groups were sent to veterans who were not able to visit memorials in their honor this year due to the pandemic.Honor Flight San Diego usually takes veterans to visit memorials in Washington D.C. built in their honor. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, that flight won't take to the sky again until May 2021.Organizers had collected 3,000 letters and cards from local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church organizations, and the national organization, Solider Angels, for previously scheduled flights.In San Diego, 120 San Diego County WWII and Korean War veterans were sent care packages on Friday. Two of those packages were hand-delivered to local veterans by Honor Flight San Diego Founder Dave Smith and Chairman Julie Brightwell.Honor Flight is a trip at no cost to veterans and has taken more than 1,400 WWII and Korean War veterans in San Diego across the country to visit war memorials.
