CHANGSHA, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Yuan Longping, China's "father of hybrid rice," celebrated his 88th birthday on Friday by participating in the first International Development Forum of Rice Production.

"There will be a total of 170 German companies participating in this year's CIIE. We are very pleased to see such a large scale of participation, which underlines the German-Chinese friendship and partnership," Koenig said.

Firms and publishers from countries including China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and France displayed different kinds of books, such as picture books, pop-up books, audio-books, comics and graphic novels, at the exhibition.

The event, previously known as the Xiangshan Forum, was first launched in 2006, aiming to promote exchanges and cooperation among defense authorities, armed forces, international organizations and scholars.

"This act of practical solidarity and partnership, without the conditions or interference in the development trajectory agendas of countries on the continent and China's position, opens the path to breaking the stranglehold of economic relations, which has severely compromised Africa's engagements with the developed world in the past," Richards said.
