SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A second Scripps Medical Response Team has deployed to Northern California, tasked with helping fire victims.The first team returned Friday after a nine-day mission.“Being there in these shelters with people that have lost totally everything, but they're thankful for their lives, it just sets a whole new meaning for us for Thanksgiving," said Steve Miller, a Registered Nurse and part of the response team.Miller says because fire victims were forced to evacuate so quickly many did not have their medications or ID's to pick up prescriptions. He says the smoke also made respiratory problems worse. The days are long for the medical team, 12 hours at the shelter providing medical care along with prep and a daily debrief. “You’re in austere conditions; you’re living in tents, it’s cold, it’s wet, you do not have electricity, so you have to be able to work in that environment. You don't have all the medical tools you have in the hospital.”The second four-person team will continue to help fire evacuees over the next week. 1056

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A stretch of Harbor Drive near San Diego International Airport was shut down after a deadly crash Wednesday morning.The single-vehicle crash was reported just after 11 a.m. on northbound Harbor Drive, about a mile from the airport’s Terminal 1.ABC 10News learned a blue car traveling at a high rate of speed on the southbound side struck an object, lost control and then crossed the median onto the northbound lanes before coming to rest.The driver was declared dead at the scene.Due to the wreck, authorities were forced to close off at least one lane on northbound Harbor Drive, creating a lengthy backup for motorists heading towards the airport. 676

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid the national conversation on systemic racism, there is growing momentum for a campaign to change the name of a local high school and its mascot.Recently, sisters Emma and Charlotte Taila described the time to act as "a now-or-never moment."Emily is a recent graduate of Serra High School. Charlotte is an incoming junior. They started a Change.org petition drive, reviving an effort to change the school's mascot, a conquistador."[The mascot] represents Spanish colonialism and the brutal impact that it had on Native Americans," said Emma.The numbers of signatures climbed quickly, and then, they got some surprise backing from school leadership."She liked the mascot change and wanted to go a step further and go for a rebranding," said Charlotte."She" is Serra High principal Erica Renfree. She's come down with cold-like symptoms after recovering from enlarged tonsils. So her mom, Josie Ruiz, brought her to their neighborhood clinic, La Maestra Community Health Center in City Heights. For this appointment, one doctor is waiting in the exam room, and another is on a computer screen.Dr. Anthony Magit is an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist and pediatrician at Rady Children's Hospital. As he watches from his office, the clinic's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Javier Rodriguez, conducts an exam. Cameras and camera-equipped scopes feed real-time data to the specialist, who then asks questions. The exam is part of La Maestra's telehealth program, which offers virtual appointments to underserved patients."Before telehealth, my previous appointments ... some of them I had to cancel or reschedule," said Ruiz.Ruiz is a single mom who works full time."This is great because in my case I don't have to request a day off to take her to the hospital, which I can't afford to do," said Ruiz.Most of the patients at this clinic don't own cars. For them, getting to Rady Children's Hospital means hours on buses, which can lead to major issues related to work and child care.Six years ago, doctors at the clinic discovered many referrals to Rady Children's Hospital weren't showing up. That has changed. No-show rates went from about 50% to 13% within two years. Across the county, other hospitals are tuning in to telemedicine, from home appointments for rural patients to consultations with specialists across the country.
