SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Officials are seeking the public's help to identify a young woman who was hit and killed on Interstate 5 near the San Clemente Border Patrol station almost two weeks ago.The Hispanic female, believed to be in her late teens to early 20s, was hit while trying to run across northbound I-5 lanes at about 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 9.She may have recently traveled to the country from Mexico or another Central American country, according to Medical Examiner investigator Tessa Lee.RELATED: Unaccompanied girl hit, killed walking on Interstate 5 near San Clemente border station"We are hoping that someone may recognize this young woman so we can identify her and notify her family," Lee said.A fingerprint search in the FBI and U.S. Border Patrol databases came back with no matches.The woman had brown eyes, long hair, weighed about 111 pounds, and was 5-feet 1-inches tall. She didn't have any identification at the time of her death.She was, however, wearing distinctive clothing: A maroon shirt with repeating cartoon prints and the word "travels" on it, jeans with a stitched design on a brand tag reading "Eemociones," and gray high-top sneakers with a heart on the sides and turquoise metallic studding.Officials have released a sketch of the woman as she would've appeared while alive.Anyone who may have any information about the woman's identity is asked to call the Medical Examiner's Office at 858-694-2905 and mention case number 2018-01951. 1496

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- On Tuesday, county leaders, along with first responders and behavioral health experts, launched a new program named after a CAL Fire captain who died by suicide in 2017.The Fire Captain Ryan J. Mitchell First Responders Behavioral Health Support Program provides a confidential 24-7 helpline for any local first responder. The helpline is staffed by former and current first responders. The program also connects first responders to local behavioral health resources and substance abuse services.CAL Fire Captain Ryan Mitchell died by suicide on November 7, 2017, at the Interstate 8 Pine Valley bridge.“He loved the acts of fighting fires,” said his widow Denelle Mitchell, in an interview with ABC 10News in October 2019.She also spoke about the difficult days. “What comes with that is a lot of hard work, a lot of hours away from your home and your family and your friends,” she said.Ryan’s father, William Mitchell, became a fire chaplain after his son’s death. While he’s heartbroken his son is no longer with them, he is proud of the legacy he is leaving behind.“Heartbreak and pride are strange bedfellows,” William Mitchell said. “It's hard to process that sometimes. We were always and will continue to be very proud of our son.”Supervisor Nathan Fletcher introduced the policy to create and fund the program in September 2019. He told ABC 10News it cost roughly 0,000 to launch with subsequent costs as the program continues.Fletcher spoke about the trauma that first responders face on the job. “At a time where it feels like no one will sacrifice for anyone, we have a group of individuals who are willing to sacrifice their own safety. They’re willing to sacrifice their own life in an effort to protect us," he said.William Mitchell is one of three Advisory Committee members for the new program. He knows the need is there and encourages all first responders to utilize the new helpline.“The need hit our family like a storm that’s never going to relent,” he said.According to Blue H.E.L.P., 228 current and former law enforcement officers died by suicide in 2019, which is higher than the previous year. The Firefighter Behavioral Health Alliance said 82 firefighters, 24 EMS personnel, and one dispatcher have died by suicide so far this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Padres all-star pitcher Kirby Yates will be out of his comfort zone Sunday night when he and his wife, Ashlee, host a night of stand-up comedy. The event will raise money and awareness for a cause very close to the Yates' heart: Epilepsy.One night in 2018, the couple was asleep when Kirby heard Ashlee begin making strange sounds. It went from that to a seizure. She was pregnant with their second child at the time."It's the first time I'd ever been involved in anything like that," Yates told 10News. "It's hard to see your wife, she's pregnant with our son, and you have feelings that you've never had before.""He was definitely terrified," Ashlee said. "I obviously don't remember it, but I just know he had a very hard time with that."After a myriad of tests, Ashlee was shocked to be diagnosed with epilepsy. "I didn't know it was random and can come at any time or age," she recalls.When searching for ways to cope with the diagnosis, Ashlee turned to one of her favorite things: Stand-up comedy. She had performed at clubs before, but began integrating humor about her condition into her act. "That was actually my outlet. As soon as this happened, that was the first thing I did. I was like, I need to do something drastic to deal with this and I don't know what those options are," Ashlee said. "I like to make people laugh. I like to have fun, so this seemed like a good fit."That led to the decision to host "Comedy for a Cause", which will take place Sunday night at the American Comedy Co. in the Gaslamp. Ashlee will perform with two other well-known San Diego comedians. Kirby and several of the biggest Padres stars will be in the crowd. They also will likely be the biggest targets for the comics' humor, "I know they're big Padres fans, so I'm sure they've been following the season and have some good jokes," Ashlee said. "I did suggest a roast on Kirby.""I told them they can roast me as much as they want and it's fine," Kirby responded.
