He and fellow active duty sailor Brian Mims were heading into the waves with their scuba diving instructor, Harvey Forbes. Forbes said days like today are perfect diving weather. "Ambient temperature is colder when you get in, and that's just the way your body works. It actually feels warmer," Forbes said. Plus, low beach attendance meant more available parking, and better concentration during their certification test. "Here, there are a lot less people, and it's more spread out, so I feel like it would be easier to get out there," Leboffe said. But as the divers were heading in, most everyone else was heading out. (CNS) - A fire burning near the Lake Hughes area is 12% contained Friday morning after scorching 11,000 acres and destroying three structures, authorities said.Firefighters, meanwhile, braced for dangerously hot weather caused by a heat wave this weekend."Near critical fire weather conditions could develop Friday afternoon and evening as gusty onshore winds could combine with warm and dry conditions in place," the Los Angeles County Fire Department reported Thursday.Crews were able to take advantage of improved fire weather conditions Thursday with slightly lower temperatures and moisture from the former hurricane Elida moving across the area, the department said."Current objectives include keeping the fire north of Castaic Lake, south of Highway 138, east of Red Rock Mountain and west of Tule Ridge," the department said.The fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday near North Lake Hughes Road and Pine Canyon Road in the Angeles National Forest and was 12% contained as of 7 a.m. Friday, according to the u. S. Forest Service, which was battling the blaze with Los Angeles County Fire Department crews and assistance from the Los Angeles, Culver City, Beverly Hills, Monterey Park, Long Beach and Santa Monica fire departments.The fire's size was listed as 11,000 acres Thursday night, with three structures destroyed and 5,420 threatened, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. No injuries have been reported."There have been areas of this fire that have not burned in decades, (and) it's in inaccessible terrain, which has added to the complexity of the fire," said Los Angeles County Fire Department Chief Daryl Osby.Although some structures were lost, a number of structures were saved by firefighters, he said."It's going to be a hot, dry summer -- and it's going to be a very, very hot, dry weekend," Osby said.On Wednesday, the fire west of Palmdale had a "rapid rate of spread," amid temperatures in the mid-90s, low humidity and gusty winds, according to the U.S. Forest Service. (KGTV) - Divers searched the San Vicente Reservoir Saturday for a missing 12-year-old girl, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and San Diego Police said.The girl fell off a ski-type boat and into the water Saturday afternoon while with her family, officials said.The search started at 6 p.m. Saturday with seven divers from San Diego Fire-Rescue. The team later found the girl’s damaged life jacket in the water.By Saturday evening, the search was designated a recovery mission instead of a rescue. Divers stopped the search as night fell.The reservoir is 306 feet deep when full. It is a popular recreation spot for boating and fishing. No swimming is permitted unless it is related to water activities including water-skiing and wake boarding.The San Vicente Reservoir will be closed Sunday, according to officials. The dive team will resume recovery work at dawn with the help of sonar technology.The girl's identity was not released. 965

LAKELAND, Fla. -- A 90-year-old Florida man who dressed in full protective gear to say goodbye to his wife, has died of COVID-19.In a Facebook post, Sam Reck's son-in-law shared the news that Sam has died.JoAnn Reck, Sam's wife of 30 years, died a few weeks earlier after battling COVID-19. She was 86 years old and Sam was 90.Sam Reck had been separated from his wife JoAnn Reck during the pandemic after the state placed a ban on visitors at nursing homes. JoAnn lived in a nursing home and suffered from dementia, and Sam lived in an apartment nearby.Family members said the couple would schedule socially-distant visits once Sam couldn't visit the home any more. Less than a year after the Boy Scouts of America decided to invite girls to join, the organization announced that it will refer to its older youth program as "Scouts BSA" starting in February 2019.The name change comes amid a new campaign slogan, "Scout Me In," that was made to emphasize the group's expansion from just boys to boys and girls."Cub Scouts is a lot of fun, and now it's available to all kids," Stephen Medlicott, National Marketing Group Director of Boy Scouts of America, said in a statement. "That's why we love 'Scout Me In' -- because it speaks to girls and boys and tells them, 'This is for you. We want you to join!'"The name change only applies to the program currently called Boy Scouts, which is available for teens ages 11-17. The Cub Scouts program, for children ages 5-10, will not undergo a name change. The name of the organization will remain Boy Scouts of America.The decision to open the scouting program to girls last October was both a reflection of growing progressive attitudes as well as a business decision. The Boy Scouts of America has seen declining numbers for years.
