(KGTV) — A suspect has been arrested in the hit-and-run death of a 17-year-old girl in unincorporated Escondido on Saturday.Paul Anthony Lissona, 29, of Escondido, was arrested and charged with felony hit and run charges in connection with the death of a teenager early Saturday morning, according to California Highway Patrol.According to CHP, the crash happened on Mesa Rock Road near Mesa Ranch Drive around 12:30 a.m. The teenager was standing outside a vehicle parked on the right shoulder talking with four friends. As three of the individuals, including the teen, crossed the road from east to west a vehicle speeding northbound hit the teen.The teen's friends and nearby residents tried to help her, but she died at the scene. She has not been identified.CHP said at about 2 a.m. Sunday, officers located a white Toyota Highlander matching the description of the vehicle involved in the collision. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) -- Nichols Elementary School in Oceanside briefly went on lockdown Monday afternoon after reports of a suspicious person on the playground. The lockdown was reported just before 12:30 p.m. Monday afternoon at the school located on the 4200 block of Old Grove Road. According to police, a school employee was out with the children on the playground when she saw an unknown man on the premises. The woman called police and took the students inside, prompting the 25-minute precautionary lockdown. Police responded and searched the area, but were unable to find anyone, at which point the school was taken off lockdown. 650

OCEAN BEACH (KGTV) - People in Ocean Beach have hatched a (not-so) secret plan to bring a popular mermaid statue back to town."We’re go-getters. We’re not going to give in. This is going to be a mission," says Claudia Jack, the self-proclaimed leader of Team Mermaid.For three weeks in May and June, a mermaid statue sat atop Ross Rock near Sunset Cliffs. Nicknamed 'Marina', the statue brought tourists and locals to the area to take pictures.For some, it was a nuisance, bringing more traffic and trash. Jack says that's one reason they don't plan to put the mermaid back on the rock."It's my goal to get her repaired and put her somewhere that she'll be appreciated," she says.The mermaid was secretly removed in June by a group calling themselves the Cliffs Crew. For a while, no one knew what had happened to it. Jack says she knows where Marina is located but won't reveal her location."I have not revealed any names or whatever," she says. "It's very hush-hush. But it will come out in the end. In a happy way."Jack has enlisted the help of a few friends and artists to repair some minor damage to Marina. She's also trying to get the entire community involved. Earlier this month, she sent out 300 postcards with a picture of the mermaid on the front. The back simply read "Save the OB Mermaid" and had an email address.She says the response has been overwhelming."What little girl doesn't want to be a mermaid?" she asks.Jack plans to unveil Marina as a statue at the Ocean Beach Holiday Parade in December. After that, she plans to let local businesses bid for the rights to host the statue for a few months at a time. OROVILLE, Calif. (AP) — A 72-year-old man found dead in a vehicle and two other people discovered on a roadway were among the latest victims of the deadliest wildfire in California this year. The Butte County sheriff's office said DNA testing was used to positively identify 10 of 15 people killed last week in the North Complex fire burning northeast of San Francisco. The victims included three people whose bodies were found in or near a burned vehicle. Gov. Gavin Newsom said more than 17,000 firefighters are battling some 25 major fires that were sparked in the past month. One soldier has been killed and seven others have been injured after an explosion occurred during a training exercise at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.WTVD-TV reports that the explosion occurred when a vehicle rolled over.
