SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego public figure is speaking out after being hit three times by distracted drivers over 8 years.Monica Zech is the Public Information Officer for the City of El Cajon. Her passion is public safety, specifically behind the wheel. She started as a Traffic Reporter in 1984 and had a 30-year career in broadcasting. She immediately found out, through reporting on first responders, how many crashes were preventable. "When my father was hit about eight years after that, when I started lecturing, then the DUI issue became prevalent," Zech said her father was walking across the street in a marked cross-walk when a drunk driver hit him in 1992.August 29th, 2011 a distracted driver ran a red light slamming into her. The crash was so violent surgeons told her she should've been paralyzed, "it was shocking to hear that. They said is this your MRI? Are you sure? I said I'm sure that's my MRI. They said well we're surprised you're sitting here, you should be paralyzed. We have patients with the same MRI and they're in a wheelchair."She now has a titanium plate that straightens her spine and protects her in case she is in a future crash. The next crash was in traffic on I-5, February of 2017. "I kept noticed his head bobbing down, looking down, I realized he was on his cell phone and wham! He hits me from behind," she said.Tuesday she was hit from behind again. This time she says she stopped at a red light about to turn onto I-8 Eastbound from La Mesa Boulevard. She said the other driver's airbags deployed, she pulled over and was extremely apologetic, saying "I was looking at my cellphone, I do Door Dash, and I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry." 10News has reached out to DoorDash for a comment and have not heard back.An excuse more common with a startling statistic from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. 1860

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An Ocean Beach woman was alarmed by a flier taped to her door saying "the antichrist will destroy anyone who worships him." Holly Raines said her 7-year-old son found the flier taped on their front door. “I started reading the letter but I was like half asleep so I started panicking a little bit because it just seemed very threatening and very intense,” Raines said. Several other neighbors say they got one too. The letter stated it was from New Life Christian Chapel, which is a few blocks away from where Raines lives in Ocean Beach. “It was very damning and then it has like a phrase that says ‘The antichrist will destroy anyone who worships him, there is no middle ground,’” she said. Raines said the flier quotes several Bible verses but found them far from comforting. “The words just aren’t very friendly, they talk about slaying lambs and antichrist and unrighteousness,” Raines said. It ended by inviting her to a home Bible study but she can't help but feel like the church crossed a line. “We have a lot of friends that go to church around here and a lot of the community churches here are awesome, they do great things,” Raines said. “The idea of taping anything on somebody’s door is a lot and this is a full document of typing. I mean if anyone wrote me a letter like that I would think it was an angry letter.”10News reached out to New Life Christian Chapel, and Pastor Thomas J. McNearny told 10News in an e-mail:"My purpose in distributing the flyers was simply to get the Word of God out to the public. I get no perverse pleasure in scaring people but simply want the best for people by helping inform them of what God's will for them is and how Jesus Christ has made a wonderful salvation available for them. The apostle Paul did say that: 'Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men. ..' Judgment is coming but there is a way to be ready. We love people and want to welcome them to come and find peace with God." 2023

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- About 40 demonstrators aired grievances Tuesday at the last San Diego City Council meeting of 2019, although not explicitly in the spirit of Festivus. The protesters, largely from the Racial Justice Coalition of San Diego, highlighted a range of concerns including homelessness, affordable housing, police tactics, smart street lights, racial bias and more. Much of the demonstrators’ criticism was aimed directly at Mayor Kevin Faulconer, who is entering his final year in office and was not in council chambers Tuesday morning. Faulconer’s office did not respond to a request for comment.RELATED: City Council approves inclusionary housing amendments"Airing of grievances" is the opening ceremony of the fictional holiday Festivus, featured in the television sitcom "Seinfeld."Protesters ended their demonstration with actors reading a spoof of “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, in which a “Mayor Scrooge” is visited by the Ghosts of Homelessness Past, Present and Future.San Diego leaders have grappled with homelessness throughout 2019. Last April, San Diego’s Regional Task Force on the Homeless Point-In-Time Count survey put the county's homeless population total at 8,102, with 4,476 unsheltered people and 3,626 sheltered people in the county.RELATED: City Council passes controversial affordable housing planSince the count, downtown tent shelters and overnight parking lots have been established to help address the issue. In October, the city council unanimously approved a 10-year, .9-billion plan to address homelessness through a series of initiatives. Plans include making more than 5,400 housing units available for homeless residents, providing more housing assistance services, and creating a leadership council. The city's plan also adopts three-year goals to halve San Diego's unsheltered homeless population and eliminate homelessness among youth and military veterans. 1925
