KENOSHA, Wisc. — Lucas Jundt is a junior quarterback at Kenosha Indian Trail High School, in Wisconsin who just happens to have prosthetic legs."Since my Dad showed me football, I'm like, I'm going to play that sport!" Jundt said."Yeah, everybody on the team is like 'why is he getting all the fame.' And I'm like, 'sorry for having no feet. I guess they just like that type of stuff!' And it inspires kids to, you know what? Hey, I can get off of my lazy butt and go out there and do something that I love," Jundt said.To his teammates, Jundt is just one of the guys. "They're like 'no mercy for you. We're just gonna go at you.' And I'm like, 'that's fine. I love it,'" Jundt said.Jundt's story of how he got to Kenosha Indian Trail's football field is the stuff of movies. "My parents abandoned me at five days old. I was born with a condition called fibula hemimelia. I don't know if I'm pronouncing that right, sorry doctors! But I was born with that. That's basically missing a fibula," Jundt explained.Born in Inner Mongolia, he was adopted by a Kenosha couple at age seven."They lost three kids. Two to an hour of life. And one for six years. Cancer, and yeah, it was just rough, they went through a lot of hardship and pain. But God said 'you know what? This is not the end of your story. Your story is still continuing. And I am going to let you adopt a son, and two more kids,'" Jundt said of his adoptive parents.Jundt says his faith keeps him going, and remembers a time talking to another media outlet about it. "I remember one news station didn't put it in, and I'm like 'please, put my faith in there.' Because my faith, is what got me here. Because of God. I am here," Jundt says. (KGTV) - A potentially flammable sea flare washed ashore at La Jolla Shores Tuesday, leading to a San Diego Fire-Rescue Bomb Squad investigation.A person who was walking on the beach near Kellogg Park found the flare canister and took it to the lifeguard station. The witness did not notify lifeguards, who found it about 3 p.m.Lifeguard Lt. Rich Stropky said the flare had not been detonated and still posed a danger, despite the presence of water in the canister.The device appears to be similar to an MK 58 Mod 1 marine location marker. An online description indicates the marker is designed to be a smoke and flames reference-point marker on the ocean’s surface. It is used for antisubmarine warfare, search-and-rescue operations, man-overboard markings, and as a target for practice bombings.The bomb squad reached out to the military Tuesday for guidance in the emergency. Troops from MCAS Miramar were called to the scene to investigate. Shortly after 8 p.m. Marines had removed the device and cleared the scene. There were no reports of injuries. 1089

JUNO BEACH, Fla. — Plastic may be impacting sea turtles more than you might think.According to a new international study, plastic was found in the gut of every single sea turtle researchers examined, casting light on just how bad plastic pollution is in our oceans.The problem lies with microplastics, which from plastic that ends up in the ocean through pollution. It breaks down into tiny pieces due to the sun and other environmental factors and then gets eaten by sea turtles and other marine life that mistakes it for food.The new research was published in the journal Global Change Biology. It found plastic in more than 100 sea turtles across the world in the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean and Mediterranean Sea.Click here to read the studySome of the objects researchers found in the turtles' guts included tire pieces, cigarettes and fishing line."Some of these chemicals are known to be endocrine disruptors, which means they mess up the hormones of the turtles," said Charles Manire, staff veterinarian at Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach, Florida. "They may affect the immune system, making them vulnerable to infections."In addition to treating sick and injured sea turtles, LMC also conducts research on the sea turtle population, including recent a collaboration with the University of Georgia to study plastic's impact on sea turtles. "We published a study recently where we examined 97 post hatchling and tiny juvenile turtles — we had plastic in all but one of those," Manire said.Click here to read the LMC/UGA studyThey've found the same problems locally, mainly in post-hatchling and juvenile turtles."That generation of turtles may not survive and that could have a major impact on the population if we don’t have turtles growing up to reach adulthood," Manire said. "Plastics have toxins in them. The chemicals that are used to makes the plastics are affecting the turtles in ways that are not very obvious to us."Manire explained that the area where the baby turtles live and grow lies within the seaweed patch offshore and, unfortunately, that's where the problem exists."It’s also where trash accumulates, in the same area," he said. "Especially with the very tiny bits of plastic, these little turtles are eating it because it looks like food to them."The new study by Global Change Biology also estimates between 4.8 million and 12.7 million tons of plastic waste could be entering oceans every year."It’s not affecting just the turtles. It’s affecting a lot of them out there," he said. "But the turtles are the sentinel that tells us something is wrong and the little turtles are definitely telling us something is wrong."If you want to help lessen the impact of plastic on marine life, Manire said, you can start by picking up any trash you see on the beach."We're trying to educate the public, trying to educate the world, telling the story so that people realize just how bad the situation is," he said. "So much plastic is ending up into the ocean, not necessarily people intentionally dumping, but plastic that blows off land or washes off land during storms."You can also recycle and reduce the amount of plastic you use such as plastic straws, cutlery and cups and substitute reusable items instead. 3329

KEARNY, N.J. — An uninvited guest made its way into several New Jersey suburbs, creating quite a stir inside normally quiet areas.Police believe a 300-pound bear is roaming around communities and was most recently seen in North Arlington.It was likely the same bear that was spotted in Kearny. It's not clear how a black bear ended up in the middle of densely populated areas like Kearny — and Harrison, beforehand — but some New Jersey residents needed a second to get their bearings after spotting the furry animal."I haven't seen any here, this is the first time. Surprised me. Especially close to my house," said Ruben Martinez.He barely noticed that it had climbed up a tree in his own backyard around 1 p.m. Monday. That was until he heard some commotion outside."When I went outside, that's when I found out. I saw police in my driveway, that's how I found out. Plus, I see a lot of people outside," Martinez said.Harrison police said the bear was first spotted on Saturday at the local Walmart and by Red Bull Arena. Officers snapped a picture with their bare hands and posted it on social media, warning people to be on alert."We did get a call from the town of Kearny that there was a bear was in the neighborhood and police were looking for it,” said Herbert Ginbel, a local resident.Police asked residents to bear with them as they tried to capture the animal. They've requested an animal control unit and notified the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife."I just hope everything will work out all right, and as a deacon I pray that the bear will be ok, and it can be returned to the habitat that I belongs,” Ginbel said.It's estimated the bear weighs 300 pounds.
