SAN DIEGO (AP) — The California National Guard is denying a report by that California has rejected President Trump's plan to send National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border. The Associated Press originally reported that troops would not be allowed to fix and repair vehicles, operate remotely-controlled surveillance cameras to report suspicious activity to the Border Patrol, operate radios and provide "mission support," which can include clerical work, buying gas and handling payroll, the state reportedly told federal officials. Lt. Col. Thomas Keegan said Monday afternoon that "state officials have not rejected anything since the Governor responded to the federal government last Wednesday with the proposed 'Memorandum of Agreement between the State of California and The Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security.'President Trump praised Governor Jerry Brown last week after Brown pledged 400 troops to the Guard's third large-scale border mission since 2006.RELATED: Trump says San Diego 'pushing hard' for border wallThe governor's commitment allowed Trump to boast support from all four border-state governors and helped put the president above the lower end of his threshold of marshaling 2,000 to 4,000 troops that he wants as a border security mission to fight illegal immigration and drug trafficking. But the Democratic Brown conditioned his support by insisting that California's troops have nothing to do with immigration enforcement. He was not specific about jobs his troops would or would not perform or how he would distinguish between immigration-related work and going after criminal gangs and drug and gun smugglers.RELATED: San Diego set to receive 28 new miles of border wallBrown last week characterized his decision to contribute troops as a welcome infusion of federally-funded support to fight transnational criminal gangs and drug and firearms smugglers. According to one U.S. official, the California Guard has suggested assigning about 40 troops to marijuana eradication across the state. 2076

SALEM, Ore. — Oregon Gov. Kate Brown says “dozens of people” are missing from the large wildfires that have burned across the state.Brown made the announcement at a news briefing Friday afternoon, and said the reports of missing people come from blazes in southern Oregon near Medford and the northern part of the state near the state capital of Salem. At least four wildfire deaths of have been reported in Oregon.Hundreds of firefighters, aided by helicopters dropping fire retardant and water, battled two large wildfires Friday that threatened to merge near the most populated part of Oregon, including the suburbs of Portland. The number of people ordered to evacuate statewide because of fires rose to an estimated 500,000 — more than 10% of the state’s 4.2 million people, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management reported late Thursday. The Oregon Convention Center in Portland was among the buildings being transformed into shelters for evacuees. Portland, shrouded in smoke from the fires, on Friday had the worst air quality of the world’s major cities, according to IQAir.Gov. Kate Brown said Thursday that more than 1,400 square miles (3,600 square kilometers) have burned in Oregon over the past three days, nearly double the land that burns in a typical year in the state and an area greater than the size of Rhode Island. 1343

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Governor Gavin Newsom is proposing withholding gas tax funding for cities that don’t build enough housing. The proposal, released Monday, sets higher short-term housing goals that cities and counties would be required to meet. If housing goals aren’t met, “Local Streets and Roads funds may be withheld from any jurisdiction that does not have a compliant housing element and has not zoned and entitled for its updated annual housing goals.”RELATED: California lawmakers want 0 billion toward clean energy, would pay with gas tax fundsIf passed, the plan would withhold gas tax funding for road repairs beginning on July 1, 2023. “Our state’s affordability crisis is undermining the California Dream and the foundations of our economic well-being,” said Governor Newsom. “Families should be able to live near where they work. They shouldn’t live in constant fear of eviction or spend their whole paycheck to keep a roof overhead. That’s increasingly the case throughout California.”According to a news release, the proposal would provide 0 million in support and incentives to help plan and zone for increased housing goals. SB1 was signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown and increased the gas tax by 12 cents per gallon and registration fees by as much as 5. In November of 2018, an effort to repeal the gas tax increase, Proposition 6, failed to pass in a statewide vote. 1421

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) -- In a document detailing devastation that could swarm California by 2100, the State of California Monday released its fourth climate change assessment. Some of the details divulged in the report include two-thirds of Southern California beaches the state says could completely disappear. And if that’s not enough, wildfires could nearly double in size by 2100, according to the California Natural Resources Agency. In a quote on the report, Governor Jerry Brown took a swipe at President Trump saying, “In California, facts and science still matter,” seemingly referring to the Trump administration’s stance on environmental issues. Brown went on to label the finding an “apocalyptic threat” in a dramatic response to the assessment. The report isn’t all doom and gloom, however, and offers a glimmer of hope as to how the state hopes to respond to the threat.Since the release of the third climate change assessment in 2012, the Golden State has experienced several history-making natural events, which include a five-year drought, flooding and increasingly-destructive wildfires. The report suggests that the extreme events will only continue to worsen in the future. 1201
