SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego doctor is leading a new national study that tests drugs designed to help coronavirus patients.If you tested positive for coronavirus this summer, there was nowhere for you to go unless you were sick enough to end up in a hospital bed. The ACTIV-2 Study hopes to keep that from happening."So this trial is specifically designed to find those agents to keep people from going to the hospital," Dr. Davey Smith said. He is the Chief of Infectious Diseases at UC San Diego and the Protocol Chair for the study."If your symptoms started within ten days and your test is positive in seven days, then you are eligible for the study," Dr. Smith said.UCSD had their first patient mid-September. There are two test sites, one at UCSD and another at Kaiser's Zion Medical Center. Dr. Smith hopes to expand to six test sites."We want to test eight drugs over the next year, maybe more. There are lots of pharmaceutical companies making better and better drugs," he said the goal is to keep people healthy."If I were to get sick and I would have something to prevent me from getting sicker that's number 1. Then the next good thing is maybe instead of having an infusion we'll have a pill or we'll have an inhaler."He said they need 2,000 participants to test each drug and will use a placebo to measure it's effectiveness.A national study, led by San Diego."Hopefully we can do our home city proud," Dr. Smith said. 1442

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A non-profit that drives sick kids and their families to the hospital is celebrating one million miles.Climbing into an Emilio Nares Foundation car, mom Latoya Johnson and her 19-year-old daughter Tay Tay started recalling the memories over the last decade. They were one of ENF's first rides. The non-profit was founded in 2003 and began giving rides in August 2005, according to ENF Vice President of Programs Luz Quiroga. The program expanded from San Diego to Orange County in 2009. Rides started in the Imperial Valley in 2015, and expanded again to San Bernardino, Riverside, and South Los Angeles in 2019.The founders lost their son, Emilio, when he was 6 years old to leukemia. During the exhausting hours of treatment, Emilio's parents realized other families didn't have enough support. When Emilio passed, they turned his loss into a legacy.Johnson said Tay Tay was first diagnosed with a tumor the size of a golf ball in her chest when she was 4-and-a-half years old."It was behind her left lung, it was growing attached to her lung," Johnson said. She found it hard to get to doctor's appointments and treatment. 'It was about three buses, two trolleys and a bus on the other side,' Johnson said. The trip took two and a half hours, then they had to walk up a hill to get to Rady Children's Hospital.In the doctor's office she saw a flier for the Emilio Nares Foundation, and they have been getting picked up ever since, shortening their trip to a half-hour door-to-door.Once they kicked the tumor in Tay Tay's chest, they found out when Tay Tay was 15 that she had a brain tumor. "She's 19 years old now, so she literally is a walking blessing, a walking miracle, and I wouldn't trade her for nothing in the world," Johnson said smiling, pinching her daughter's cheek.Johnson said without the foundation she would have been in tears and they absolutely saved her daughter's life.With the foundation celebrating one million miles, Johnson is working on understanding the impact the foundation had not only on their lives, but on 4,000 children."I wanna cry, because I know I'm crying but the tears won't come out because they're all on the inside, but it's amazing. I'm just happy and blessed for you guys," Johnson said hugging CEO Karen Terra.She hopes telling her story will get more families the help they need.ENF kicked off their "Ride with Emilio" campaign Monday and it continues through the end of the month. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new cancer screening method is promising to eliminate the need for painful biopsies and greatly reduce the cost of the procedure.It's part of a line of research known as liquid biopsy and the latest advancement is being ramped up for mass production by an entrepreneurial couple in Torrey Pines at the research firm, BioFluidica.  Among billions of blood cells, the company has developed a chip capable of finding a single abnormal cell afflicted with cancer or other diseases."It is probably the most sophisticated injection molding piece in this world," said molecular biologist Rolf Muller, as he holds up a thin, plastic chip about two inches square.First developed by researchers in North Carolina, the chip is injected with a small blood sample which can contain billions of individual cells. The blood passes through 150 tiny tunnels within the chip which are coated with antibodies. Those antibodies do their natural work of isolating the abnormal cells.Researchers can then identify them for any possible threat and treatment.The Mullers say the screenings have the potential to dramatically increase survival rates for cancer patients. And to eliminate the need for the often painful biopsies currently in use.They also envision the test becoming a normal part of standard blood screenings. The chip is currently in clinical trials. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A non-profit in Logan Heights is asking for the neighborhood's help clean up a community space used by families and children. The Logan Heights Community Development Corporation owns the Gilliam Family Community Space. In March, they were forced to shut it down indefinitely because vandals were using the space overnight.  The area is covered in graffiti and littered with trash. The vandals were using the tree house overnight and damaging the fruits and vegetables in the community garden.  Now, the non-profit wants volunteers to help revamp the area. They plan on knocking the tree house down and eliminating the garden to deter the people coming in overnight. A large community cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, June 2 at 2835 Imperial Avenue at 9 a.m. The non-profit relies solely on donations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A man was shot and killed in the Midway District Sunday morning, leading to a standoff in North Park, and a suspect is still on the loose, according to police.San Diego Police responded after receiving reports of a shooting behind a 24 Hour Fitness near Kemper Street and Midway Drive around 11 a.m.After arriving, police found a 27-year-old white man dead at the scene.
