SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As the biotech industry grows in San Diego, many companies are hiring, offering people a chance at high-paying jobs in an emerging field."The jobs that are in demand are the ones most difficult to fill," says Lisa Bozinovic, Executive Director of the Biocom Institute, a trade association for the industry in California.According to Biocom's most recent survey of the companies across the state, 88 percent say they plan to expand and hire in the next 12 months. The average salary is 7,000."They need people skilled in IT, HR, administration, accounting, sales," Bozinovic says. "We're lucky that San Diego has that life-science industry and we have that opportunity."Ashley Reynolds, who works in Regulatory Affairs at Tandem Diabetes, says programs like these helped her find a place in the industry, even though she had no interest in lab work."There's no one way to do something," she says.Reynolds got a bachelor's degree in biology from UC Riverside and a master's degree in regulatory affairs at San Diego State. She also went to Cal State San Marcos for a lab tech certificate. She says it was a lot of work, but it's been worth it in the long run."You make a path to get there and don't even worry about all the other obstacles in your way," she says. "If you're determined to get there, you will."That's the message Bozinovic has as well. It may take returning to school, but it's an investment in your long-term future."For ,000, you can get a four year degree and slide right into a job," she says of the program at MiraCosta. And, remember, you don't always need a full four year degree.Bozinovic and Reynolds both say someone looking to make a change should take some time to learn about the industry first, and see what part of it interests them. The best way to do that is to go to career fairs or science expos and talk to people at the booths. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Cruise ship cancellations amid the Coronavirus pandemic have cost the region more than 0 million in lost economic activity, according to the Port of San Diego.The Port says since March, 75 cruises have canceled, meaning a 6 million loss in retail, restaurant, lodging and related transportation and shipping services. The 2020-2021 season, which was supposed to start Sept. 13, has already seen 49 cancellations. "When it’s safe for sailings to resume, we will do what we can to work with and support our cruise and public health partners to ensure the safety of cruise passengers, terminal staff, and the public," the Port said in a statement. The loss is hitting tourism-related businesses, already suffering from a loss of conventions, and social distancing restrictions. Chuck Abbott, general manager of the Intercontinental Hotel San Diego, just steps from the terminal, said cruisers usually stay a night pre or post cruise."It's still an amount of business that comes, which is beneficial," he said. "They're on leisure, and those people usually like to dine out and enjoy things."The CDC has halted cruising through at least Sept. 30. If that expires, San Diego's next arrival would be Nov. 5 through the Carnival Miracle. Some European cruise lines have once again started sailing, with capacity limits and social distancing restrictions. However, one local company has found a way to deal with these challenges, especially as kids get ready to start a new school year. Brain Balance of San Diego offers a holistic program that specializes in getting to the root of children's challenges."Those challenges might be academically, socially, or behavioral, says office director Amanda Lee. "We see a lot of parents who come in with children struggling with attention, and sensory processing."And at Brain Balance, they stay away from medications. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Car owners at a senior community in University City woke up to a messy surprise Tuesday morning. Louise, who asked 10news not to identity her, went to her SUV which was parked on Kantor Street, and her heart sank."I walked to my car and saw that the window had been burst.  It was terrifying," said Louise.Glass was everywhere and inside her vehicle was another mess.  Her glove compartment had been tossed, her insurance and registration scattered.  Nothing was missing, but Louise is nervous."Very afraid of the personal information now they know what address I'm actually at," said Louise.It appears someone took a bat or something like that to bash the window, before unlocking their passenger door.  Louise is not the only victim.  Nearby there were more vehicles hit, some 14 in all.  The windows on those vehicles were also shattered.  Some items were stolen and the repairs will cost hundreds of dollars for each incident."A lot of people on fixed incomes. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — As California deals with its worst energy crisis in two decades and the threat of more rolling blackouts, a lot of people are wondering who -- or what -- is to blame.Energy experts say last weekend’s blackouts are raising new questions about the way the state manages its electrical grid. California is the only state in the west that uses an independent system operator, an entity known as Cal ISO.“This is really just a demonstration that the reliability of the grid is less reliable with [Cal ISO] than when we just had regular utilities,” said San Diego-based energy consultant Bill Powers.Cal ISO manages 80 percent of California’s power grid. It manages the flow of electricity for investor-owned utilities like an air traffic controller manages the flow of privately owned airplanes down a runway. City-owned utilities like the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power are not part of the Cal ISO system.Cal ISO, previously known as CAISO, was formed in 1998 after regulatory changes during the Clinton administration that were designed to make the energy market more competitive.Powers said the fundamental idea was simple: “instead of having these monopoly utilities controlling everything, let's open up the transmission systems.”But it didn’t take long for flaws in the system to emerge. In 2001, market manipulation from companies like Enron prompted dozens of rolling blackouts.In other states like Arizona, utilities are responsible for the electrical transmission within their service territory. Those utilities are able to rapidly respond if conditions prompt the need for additional power generation, Powers said.“[It’s] one-stop shopping. Here it’s two-stop shopping,” he said. “You've got another layer of fat in there. And if that layer of fat is playing the game a different way, simply making sure everyone is covered, then you have the potential to have a breakdown. And we're now experiencing a breakdown.”The most recent major breakdown was in 2011, when 1.4 million San Diegans suddenly found themselves in the dark.A federal investigation into the Great Blackout of 2011 cited “inadequate real-time situational awareness” -- basically bad grid management -- and faulted several entities, including Cal ISO.Edward Lopez, the executive director of the Utility Consumers’ Action Network, said last weekend’s rolling blackouts were another example of bad grid management.“This is an indication that, again, this statewide organization needs to be better prepared and ready to jump into action quicker,” he said.Cal ISO blames another state agency for the recent rolling blackouts, the California Public Utilities Commission, along with California’s evolving energy portfolio.About one-third of the energy California now generates in-state is from renewable sources like solar and wind. When clouds roll in and the winds subside, that can be a problem.“Lack of resources, the heat, those go into account,” Lopez said, “but on the other hand, this was not unpredictable.”Even though more Californians have been staying home due to the pandemic, last weekend’s conditions were not particularly remarkable, he said. With the impact of climate change, above normal temperatures are expected to become more common.One solution to California’s renewable energy problem, he said, is to invest in more energy storage.Cal ISO’s own data shows energy demand last weekend was lower than in previous peak years and there were reserves available, Powers said.“Why do we keep reserves if we’re not willing to use those reserves when conditions get tight?” Powers said.City-owned utilities like LADWP that are independent from Cal ISO did not experience rolling blackouts, one reason Powers thinks there’s a problem with California’s energy air traffic controller.“Maybe we need better rules.
