Toyota cars and SUVs with push-button ignitions will now turn themselves off after being parked for a period of time, even if the driver didn't hit the "Engine Off" button.Cars that can be left running for hours, even after the driver has left the vehicle, have been blamed for deaths. Since 2006, a total of 37 people have died and 80 have been injured by carbon monoxide gas after drivers left vehicles with push-button ignitions running in the garage, according to the organization KidsAndCars.org. Toyota and Lexus vehicles were involved in almost half of those incidents, a spokeswoman for the organization said. Lexus is Toyota's luxury division.Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause permanent brain damage or death. When a garage is connected to the house, it can seep into the home if a car's engine is left running.Toyota will add the engine shut-off feature to most of its 2020 model year vehicles.The company would not comment on whether past incidents had any bearing on the company's decision to add the feature. There is an urgent need for more healthcare workers nationwide.Recruiting firm NuWest Group is working to find 200 nurses before the end of this week. Specifically, they want intensive care unit (ICU) nurses who will travel to the hardest hit areas, like New York City.“What all these facilities are gearing up for is this middle of April timeline, so the big rush to get these nurses to where they need to be before the peak hits,” said Mona Veiseh, President of NuWest Group’s Healthcare Division. NuWest Group says it wants to speed-up nurses becoming licensed to work in other states. They did this in Washington state. New York is already willing to look at any licensure across the country.Nurses are being paid more incentives to work where the greatest need is. Mona Veiseh says the pay rates for ICU nurses and registered respiratory technicians are the highest she's seen in her 14 years in the business. She's also seeing many nurses already answering the call to go where there is need.“I have seen entire units lend groups of ICU nurses to other units across the country trying to get the nurses to where the outbreaks are the most significant,” said Veiseh. Another unprecedented measure – nurses and medical students are being fast tracked to work in hospitals earlier. Some nurses in New Jersey are working in field hospitals for their final semester instead of going to school. The U.S. Air Force has released preliminary information on an inspection across the Air Force Academy grounds to determine if there elevated levels of chemicals found in firefighting foam and other industrial products in the ground and groundwater. As a result, the Air Force will begin inspecting drinking wells south of the Academy, including the Woodmen Valley area, for potential contamination. According to a release, the results show groundwater samples contain levels higher than the Environmental Protection Agency Lifetime Health Advisory, which allows for 70 parts per trillion. These compounds have not been detected in water supplied by Colorado Springs Utilities to the Air Force Academy, according to the release. The statement references voluntary sampling conducted in January showed results at or below the EPA limit of 10 parts per trillion for water supplies. The US Food and Drug Administration on Monday warned leading e-cigarette maker Juul Labs about illegally marketing its product as a safer alternative to cigarettes.The FDA ordered Juul to respond within 15 days with corrective actions and its plan to comply with federal law. It noted that failure to comply could result in fines, seizures or injunction."Regardless of where products like e-cigarettes fall on the continuum of tobacco product risk, the law is clear that, before marketing tobacco products for reduced risk, companies must demonstrate with scientific evidence that their specific product does in fact pose less risk or is less harmful. JUUL has ignored the law, and very concerningly, has made some of these statements in school to our nation's youth," Acting FDA Commissioner Dr. Ned Sharpless said in a statement.The FDA sent a separate letter to Juul "expressing concern, and requesting more information, about several issues raised in a recent Congressional hearing regarding JUUL's outreach and marking practices, including those targeted at students, tribes, health insurers and employers."The agency requested documents related to marketing, including scientific evidence and data such as consumer perception studies "related to whether these statements and representations explicitly or implicitly convey that JUUL products pose less risk, are less harmful, present reduced exposure, are safer than other tobacco products or that the products are smoking cessation products.In November, the FDA revealed that vaping had increased nearly 80% among high schoolers and 50% among middle schoolers since a year earlier.
