LOVELAND RESERVOIR, Calif. (KGTV) - With Santa Ana winds in the forecast for Wednesday morning, Cal Fire stationed more than 500 firefighters in strategic spots to attack any hot spots that flared up in the Valley Fire burn area.The plan worked.Crews were able to recognize hot spot fires quickly and direct resources to fight them before early morning winds spread the flames across Lawson Valley.One flare-up started on a mountain peak just northeast of Loveland Reservoir. That area burned on Saturday, but Barona Fire Department Chief Ken Kremensky said embers stayed hot enough under the tree canopy to reignite Wednesday morning."The retardant coats the area," Kremensky explained. "But a lot of times in the heavier brush it lays along the top of the brush and it doesn't penetrate all the way the ground so there's hot stuff and it creeps in there. And once it creeps through the retardant, it gets into that open field starts to spread. If you get some wind on it and it picks up, you see the flame starting to show up."The fire was in a remote area that would take hand crews hours to reach. So, Cal Fire sent in a squad of helicopters.Helicopters from San Diego Gas & Electric, Cal Fire and the San Diego County Sheriff's Department took turns dousing the flames with water for nearly an hour, making multiple passes and filling up with water from the reservoir.After they left, military helicopters took over. By 11 a.m., the fire was mostly out."We'll just keep plugging away and hopefully the weather will cooperate with us and that'll be a good success," said Kremensky.Heavy winds never materialized, with gusts in the fire zone topping out at 30 miles an hour. Crews were able to handle several other hot spots that ignited and keep the flames within the fire perimeter.Kremensky said they were fortunate that the weather cooperated. 1862

Inside, face masks labeled for each physician.“We have paper bags on our window sills with a bunch of masks. In there, we have 3-4-5 masks we’re rotating through. Those have to be kept covered to protect them from splatter or anything because once they get dirty, then they have to be thrown out,” Dr. Daniel Gold said. “We circulate gowns as well.”Gold is an E.N.T., which is the medical and surgical choice for anything having to do with the ears, nose or throat. It's a profession that is very much in your face, so protective gear is of utmost importance.“After wearing them for 5-10 minutes, you get short of breath and you’re like this is really hard,” he said.Doctors like Gold are having a hard time getting more gear. In fact, Dr. Gold often uses shields that are designed for sheet metal work because medical grade equipment is back ordered, or entirely unavailable. A surgical mask which once cost 30 or 40 cents now costs to .50.They've also found that knockoffs are being sold.“Not made of same material, not sealing against the face, and some had seam lines and then when you really looked, you’d realize there were holes through the seam lines that’s not blocking 95%,” Gold said. “You’re better wearing a t-shirt mask.”Dr. Gold is far from alone on this issue. It's a statewide and nationwide problem. Dr.Bonnie Litvack is the president of the Medical Society, State of New York.“That is an absolute mess because we can’t deliver the care if we don’t have the resources and the mask is ground zero for that,” Said Dr. Bonnie Livtack, the president of the Medical Society of the State of New York.When asked about whether they were able to negotiate for price on PPE, Litvack said, “With the various companies they either have it or they don’t, or you pay the prices or you don’t.”Dr. Litvack joined other state medical societies in the country by sending a letter to the Senate. They're asking the government to step in."We urge Congress to prioritize the production, distribution, and availability of PPE and testing, and accelerate efforts to conduct contact tracing,” the letter read. “All of these are essential to the safe reopening of medical practices and the economy and must be prioritized for all health care workers."They're also asking for financial help as their costs to operate, while seeing half the patient volume, are mounting.“These additional precautions and equipment is running us about per patient,” Dr. Gold said. “It’s about a million in extra overhead a month just in these extra masks, and gowns, and gloves and wipes. According to information on their website, they have developed several vaccines for infectious diseases, however they are all in various stages of development or clinical trials. These include vaccines for the seasonal flu and RSV. I think they are discerning and they want a quality relationship and quality experience. And if the experience is not a good one, they are not going to stay just because they are supposed to be loyal. That doesn't work for them," she says. The Gallup Poll conducted recently also showed millennials want benefits and perks that directly impact their lives and the lives of their family members.Lea says seeing those desires even led her to reexamine her own. "Because of the information available to millennials, they are not afraid to ask for what they want. I think it took me into maybe the last 5-10 years to say, 'Oh, I could ask for something different, I'm not going to just take what's offered to me,' " she says"It makes me reflect a little bit on my own philosophy, you don't have to stay someplace just because you've been there before or you've agreed to do that. You need to be discerning and you need to make decisions whether it is the right thing for you, whether it matches your values and I think that's very good. It makes us more reflective and makes it a better experience than going in and not being engaged," she added.Now working for Expedia Cruiseship Centers in Boca Raton, Pinto says she is happier than ever. She says, "it's really what I want. There's days when I'm busy at home, I have appointments at home so I can work from home and there are days I have clients that might be coming in so I come into work." She adds, "now I see the difference in my happiness and the benefit of being here."
