SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Among the thousands of UC San Diego students moving into campus housing for the fall quarter, 10 have tested positive for COVID-19 and been moved into temporary isolation lodging, campus officials reported Wednesday.In the same two-week round of coronavirus testing, more than 5,700 students came up negative, according to the La Jolla-area university.The resulting infection rate of 0.17%, was "less than anticipated" and below San Diego's overall rate, UCSD officials advised.During the process, UC San Diego's lab averaged 1,500 coronavirus tests daily for two weeks. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County health officials announced Thursday that flu activity remained steady over the last week but confirmed flu cases are still three times what they were at this time last year.The county's Health and Human Services Agency confirmed only 36 flu cases over the last week, bringing the county's 2019-2020 flu season case total to 335. The county had confirmed 109 cases at this time last year.Only two residents have died due to flu complications since the county's flu season started July 1. At this time last flu season, the county had not recorded a flu death.County health officials expect flu cases to spike as the year approaches the holiday season and gets deeper into autumn and winter."The holiday season is right around the corner," said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. "With family and work gatherings coming up and people taking part in holiday activities, now is the time to get your flu shot to make sure you avoid getting sick and spreading the virus to others."County health officials and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially in demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications like pregnant women, people with chronic medical conditions like lung disease and people age 65 or older.Residents can take precaution against contracting the virus by frequently washing their hands, cleaning commonly touched surfaces and avoiding contact with sick people. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than 28,000 defaulted bills were sent out to San Diego County taxpayers this week, but the county's treasurer announced Tuesday that his office is offering penalty relief."We know many of the late bills are due to COVID-19, and we want our taxpayers to know there could be relief," Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister said. "They may qualify to have their penalties waived if they file for a COVID-19 cancellation request. Our customers must provide documentation as evidence to show how the pandemic impacted their ability to pay their second installment by April 10."The 28,623 defaulted bills McAllister's office sent out went to property taxpayers who failed to pay all their 2019-20 property taxes."We're sending 6,195 more defaulted bills than we sent last year," he said. "We expected to see an increase in tax defaults due to COVID-19's impact on the San Diego economy and workforce."The defaulted bills total over 7 million; last year, million in defaulted taxes was due.The deadline to pay the 2019-20 annual tax bill was June 30. Beginning July 1, late bills will incur a 1.5% penalty each month -- 18% each year -- until they are paid. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Officials Thursday publicly identified a woman whose body was found floating in Mission Bay last weekend.A visitor to Fiesta Island made an emergency call shortly after 6:30 a.m. Saturday to report spotting 36-year-old Anita Teres dead in the waters of the manmade harbor south of Pacific Beach, according to San Diego police.``Although there were no obvious traumatic injuries seen (on) the victim, due to the circumstances and the condition of the body ... homicide investigators were called to the scene out of an abundance of caution,'' Lt. Matt Dobbs said. ``Very little is known about the victim or the circumstances surrounding the death at this time.''Authorities have been unable to locate any next of kin for Teres, who was known to frequent Fiesta Island, downtown San Diego, La Mesa and various local trolley stops, according to police. 874
