BEIJING, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao left here Monday morning for the upcoming Nuclear Security Summit on April 12-13 in Washington at the invitation of the U.S. President Barack Obama.Hu will deliver a speech stressing the importance of nuclear security and clarifying China's policy on the issue. BEIJING, June 4 (Xinhua) -- China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the top economic planner, refuted a report on Friday claiming China is facing stagflation risks, arguing the national economic growth might slow slightly but stagflation is not going to occur.The NDRC response followed the release of a domestic report that claimed rising inflation and slowing economic growth would lead to stagflation in China.The NDRC added that the report was inaccurate and likely to cause misunderstandings and confusion, according to a statement released on its website.The statement went on to say growth in China's gross domestic product (GDP) was likely to slow down this year because of a higher comparison base used in the second half of last year, but it would still be one of the world's strongest growth rates and should not be labeled as "stagflation".Further, the NDRC noted that the consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of China's inflation, was likely to exceed the government's 3-percent growth target in several months, but "there is a foundation to achieve the full-year CPI target of 3 percent" as long as China continued improving macro-regulations, it said.The NDRC statement noted that China would see "stable and comparatively fast economic growth" and "a moderate consumer price increase" this year.China's GDP rose 11.9 percent from a year earlier during the first quarter of this year. The CPI increased 2.4 percent year on year in March while the growth for April accelerated to 2.8 percent, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).The NBS is scheduled to release May economic data, including the CPI, fixed asset investment and retail sales, on June 11.

BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu has urged local governments and builders to ensure quake survivors in northwestern province of Qinghai have warm places to stay this winter."It's a priority for the government to build more permanent houses so quake survivors can move in before winter," Hui said at a State Council, or Cabinet, meeting in Beijing on Thursday, according to a statement released after the meeting.At the same time the government must start preparing enough tents, fuels and stoves for winter heating for those living in temporary shelters as soon as possible, he said.Winter temperatures in high-altitude Yushu region, where a 7.1-magnitude quake on April 14 killed about 2,200 people, could drop to 20 degrees below zero.Hui also urged efforts to provide enough food, improve medical services,and attend to the needs of vulnerable groups like orphans in the quake zone.The reconstruction in the quake zone would be mainly funded by the central government. Hui urged builders, mainly from other parts of China to aid Qinghai's reconstruction efforts, to carefully carry out rebuilding projects with high efficiency and quality.

BRISBANE, Australia, April 4 (Xinhua) -- All the crew members are safe after a Chinese coal ship ran aground off the eastern coast of Australia on Saturday, said Chinese Consul-general in Brisbane Ren Gongping on Sunday.Ren told Xinhua that the 230-meter-long bulk coal carrier Shen Neng 1 ran aground about 70 km east of Great Keppel Island in Queensland State shortly after 5 p.m. on Saturday.The vessel, carrying 950 tons of heavy fuel oil and 65,000 tons of coal, is bound for China.Ren said he had phoned the captain of the carrier, Wang Jichang, who told Ren that drinking water and food are enough for the 23 crew members. The incident caused no injuries to the crew.The consul-general said the captain told him the incident is not serious and repair is underway.Ren added that he was very much concerned about the safety of the Chinese crew and he had contacted the local police immediately after learning the incident. The police had assured Ren that they would try their best to safeguard the crew in case of an emergency.Three police ships have reached the area and are ready to take the crew to safe place from the coal carrier.
