SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  Authorities have identified the man who died after he and another man played a consensual "punching game" in a Gaslamp Quarter sports bar early Saturday morning.Corey Poole, 27, had apparently gone out drinking at the downtown sports bar with a group of friends. The group arrived at the Jolt’n Joe’s at 379 Fourth Avenue just before 1 a.m. Police say both men were drinking when they decided to have a punching contest.Police say that Poole and a friend began "consensually sparring" and punching each other in the chest.  During the game, Poole fell to the ground and became unresponsive, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office said.Staff at the bar performed CPR on the 27-year-old who was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he died about an hour later."The decedent and a friend began consensual sparring, consisting of concurrently punching each other with closed fists on the chest," the Medical Examiner's Office said, describing what police had previously called "playing a punching game.""After receiving several punches to the chest, the decedent was struck and immediately collapsed and became unresponsive," the Medical Examiner's Office said.Officials are still working to determine whether Poole's death was an accident, a homicide or something else.Poole's friend, who remained at the location and was hospitalized for chest pain, was not arrested and it's unclear if charges against him will be filed. 1502

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While the Friday night lights of high school football are dimmed for the time being, the same cannot be said for the pickleball courts in Del Cerro."There is nothing better than to play pickleball on a Friday night," says avid player Deanna McDonald.Some players decided to pick up the game after the pandemic hit, and found it to be so much fun. And while some sports and other physical activities have been limited, or put on hold due to COVID-19, pickleball has become a great alternative."When my gym closed, I was looking for something to do besides just walking around my neighborhood a few times, and get some exercise," says pickleball newcomer Noli Zosa.As for player Joe Arnold, he can't get enough pickleball."I suffer from what is called pickleball addictive disorder, and it really helps that a lot," Arnold joked.Prior to the pandemic, pickleball was exploding in popularity. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— A Point Loma boy must now walk to and from school after a thief stole his custom BMX bike. San Diego Police need the public's help to find the man who took the boy's prized possession. BMX riding is 9-year-old Bradley Ramos' favorite pastime. It's a passion that runs in the family. His father, Aaron, dabbled it in as a child. So did Bradley's cousin, Tyler."This bike was actually his cousin's bike when his cousin was his age. Now his cousin is 21 years old, so the bike has been in the family for a while," Ramos said. That was, until Memorial Day morning. Bradley's mother noticed the bike was missing from their front porch."My bike and my helmet got stolen," Bradley said. The family's security camera captured a man walking away with Bradley's bike. The video shows the young man with arm tattoos wearing a hat and backpack. He looks to be wearing glasses and a distinctive white watch."It kind of sucks because I have to get rides to school now when usually, I'd ride my bike and it's way quicker," Bradley said. The bike theft is the second in as many weeks for the Ramos family. Last Monday, thieves made off with at least ,500 worth of tools from Ramos' work truck. "Since that's been happening, we've been bringing the bike in, and we didn't do it just that one night, and it was gone," Ramos said. The BMX bike has thin red wheels with a racing number plate in the front handlebars. It's not a common model, so the Ramos family is asking people to keep an eye out, and alert authorities if they spot it. To the man who made off with the Ramos' family heirloom, Bradley and his father have a stern message. "Give it back, and never come back to this neighborhood again," Bradley said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Tracking citizen complaints about law enforcement is a requirement of California law. However, some say there needs to be a significant improvement in that process."Police officers have tremendous authority," said former police officer and criminal justice professor Kevin LaChapelle. He broke down how the process works."[In] a formal complaint, there should be written documentation and the agency is accountable for reporting that to the Department of Justice," LaChapelle said. LaChapelle says the formal complaint process differs from an informal complaint, where someone may talk to an officer or supervisor but no documentation is required. Those interactions are not included in DOJ numbers. When it comes to two of the largest departments in the county, Team 10 found the number of complaints differ drastically. In 2018, the San Diego Sheriff's Department reported nine complaints. In 2017, there were six reported complaints.San Diego Police Department reported 74 complaints last year.
