SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Thursday San Diego city leaders announced the city will be joining AARP’s network of age-friendly communities.This means elected officials have made a commitment to prepare for San Diego’s aging population with policies that will focus on AARP’s “8 Domains of Livability” which include communication, civic participation, housing and transportation.At a press conference in front of San Diego City Hall, Councilmember Chris Ward said the city is committed to building a “sustainable and inclusive city where San Diegans of all ages and abilities can have long, active, and productive lives.”San Diego now joins Chula Vista, La Mesa, and the County of San Diego in becoming an age-friendly community.“San Diego’s membership in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities and our local partnership with The San Diego Foundation are essential to helping residents live easily and comfortably in their homes and communities as they age,” said Ward.“This is just the beginning, the hard work begins, the implementation part of it is where it’s at,” said Joe Garbanzos with AARP California. “It’s good to see that the city recognized that this is good framework to use to help advance livable communities in the area.”Kevin Mayor Faulconer was not present at the news conference, but wrote the following statement.“Here in San Diego we’re focused on building more affordable housing, increasing mobility choices, and creating livable communities to improve the quality of life for all San Diegans, including older adults,” said Faulconer. “We also recognize the importance of preparing for San Diego’s aging population with policies that enhance healthy aging, civic participation, and social inclusion. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Thieves hit a well-known business causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. Bill Howe Plumbing, located on Aero Drive, had their work trucks vandalized as thieves steal gas from the gas tanks. Fleet manager Rhett Wheeler says the business has been targeted at least three times in the last month. “Its a shock that someone will crawl underneath a car with a drill, drill a hole in a gas tank, to steal a couple of gallons of gasoline,” says Wheeler. Thieves have damaged at least 10 vehicles, costing the family-owned company around ,000 in damages. “We end up losing a truck for two or three days per occurrence,” says Wheeler. Wheeler is urging everyone, including businesses, to check their vehicles of leaking gas before driving off. The company has reported the incidents to police. Managers are also working on more security measures for the future. 889

The players are not surprised at all their success the last two years, as they say head coach Mitch Charlens has them believing in themselves and very confident.San Diego City College is a rags to riches story. When coach Charlens took over the program 14 years ago, they did not have many players, no uniforms, and not a real gym to practice in.If they can win another California state JUCO title, they would become the first team to go back to back in over 60 years. 685

San Diego shipbuilder General Dynamics NASSCO has notified nearly 1,500 workers that they could be out of a job next month. The shipbuilder, however, says it anticipates letting go of closer to 350 workers. NASSCO says the layoffs are related to a dry dock accident in July that caused damaged to its facilities, although the workers union president says other factors are at play.“We are pursuing all available options to avoid or lessen the impact of these reductions and hope to increase our workforce as soon as possible to support work expected in 2019,” NASSCO president Kevin Graney said in a layoff notice to the state. RELATED: San Diego dry dock floods following barrier collapseThe list of jobs impacted includes 129 welders, 85 electricians, 84 painters and 82 pipe fitters.  Robert Godinez, who heads the Boilermakers Union Local 1998, said the number of potential layoffs is high because NASSCO uses an evaluation system to guide which workers it lays off. Those with the lowest evaluation are out first, and that can change with training.Godinez said he expects the layoffs to last about four to six months until NASSCO can fix its dry dock.  "If they lay off 400, 500, 600, 700, that should cover that notification requirement," he said. The layoffs come after NASSCO held a large hiring fair in April, as it looked to add 800 to 1,000 new welders and shipbuilders.However, Godinez said the shipbuilder did not hire even close to that number. He said Navy repair work fizzled and that a construction project got set back. Additionally, a union newsletter mailed before the accident reported 48 workers had been laid off  - a number too low to trigger a WARN public notice.  “People weren't ready for this, they weren't ready for the layoff,” Godinez said. “They were walking into the shipyard, they were watching these humongous banners that they’re going to be hiring like crazy and everyone’s on the upswing, and all of a sudden the layoffs start.”At the time of the accident, the fire department said a barrier that keeps water from going into the ship collapsed, leading to a flood. No one was hurt. Godinez said 4 million gallons of water rushed in and hit a 70,000 ton ship. That damage is delaying the next order, leading to the potential layoffs.NASSCO spokesman Dennis DuBard pinned the layoffs to the July 11 incident, and said the company is working to remedy the situation. 10News has since inquired about issues related to the April hiring event. “We are working diligently so not all employees who were notified will be affected. We regret the impact this will have on employees and their families,” DuBard said. “The company has arranged a variety of programs and resources to assist those who will be affected.”Godinez said the union would be working to arrange for additional training for workers who could be laid off, so they can find new jobs.  3023
