SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A candidate for the County Board of Supervisors says he may open his own doors to the homeless.Attorney and North Park resident Omar Passons is now leaning towards renovating his detached garage and housing homeless.Passons first began mulling it over after reading a recent local opinion piece touting the idea of a so-called "foster care system" for the homeless, matching transients with willing homeowners.Passons says the foster homes would likely house those needing transitional housing - perhaps several weeks - with applicants screened by a city or county agency.He plans more research on the topic, but says the idea could fit as one part of a comprehensive plan to combat homelessness."Because of the housing shortage, this becomes - at least in a portion of the circumstances - a lower-cost alternative to standing up an 80-unit building. I do think there is space for creative solutions, and I hope this starts to open people's minds to what is possible," said Passons.Passons posted his idea on the Nextdoor app, which drew a sharply divided reaction. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A Carlsbad animal rescue is holding a very special baby shower in preparation of an influx of baby animals this spring.From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Rancho Coastal Humane Society's San Diego Wildlife Center (SDWC) will collect donations for cottontail rabbits, squirrels, hawks, raccoons, owls, and other wildlife.“Wildlife babies are really difficult for humans to raise. Baby rabbits are extremely hard to raise away from their mother. Mothers leave the nest alone all day and only come to feed at dawn and dusk," Trish Jackman, SDWC's director, said. "Well-intentioned people sometimes ‘rescue’ baby wildlife that doesn’t need their help, and would possibly be better off left alone."There’s a list of items we’re going to need as more and more babies arrive in the coming days, weeks, and months ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Delta passenger mauled by an emotional support dog has filed a lawsuit against the airline and the dog's owner, a Marine combat veteran.In June 2017, Marlin Jackson boarded a San Diego-bound flight in Atlanta headed for a work conference. Soon after, fellow passengers watched in horror as a brutal dog attack played out in front of them.Jackson sat in a window seat. In the middle seat was a Marine veteran was with an emotional support dog, a chocolate lab pointer mix, in his lap. According to a Jackson's just-filed lawsuit, while he was securing his seat belt, "the animal began to growl."RELATED: Service dog or pet? The lawsuit states the dog was briefly restrained, before pinning Jackson against the window and mauling Jackson again, resulting in 28 stitches and permanent loss of sensation in his face. He bled so profusely that "an entire row of seats had to be removed."The incident sparked national headlines, and tighter policies for emotional support and service animals. For example, Delta now requires proof of training, adding rules for the types and ages of the animals, as well the duration of flights that allow emotional support animals.Delta declined to comment citing pending litigation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A first-of-its-kind residential tower opened in San Diego this week.The 300-unit Palisade UTC complex is located right on the Westfield UTC mall's property. It offers an expansive pool, bar area, community room, open-air gym, and a lounge on the 23rd floor, with views to the coast. "The goal was to have multiple spaces, again, that would be like staying at a four or five star resort," said Jerry Brand, executive director of developer Greystar. The building will be among the most expensive in San Diego County.Studios start at ,750 a month, while two-bedroom units start at ,300. The penthouse is advertised for ,000 per month. It also includes 30 affordable units. Analysts say luxury buildings like Palisade can play a role in easing all of the region's housing crunch. "A substantial portion of the people moving into, like, the new projects downtown are actually vacating the older projects and moving up, so the luxury projects that are going up are really helping the housing situation," said Alan Nevin, director of economic research at Xpera Group.
