SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Padres players and city leaders surprised more than 140 elementary school students with new bicycles Friday.As part of the Padres Holiday Giving Tour, the team partnered with Bikes for Kids Foundation to gift 141 students at Horton Elementary School. At first, the group of second- and third-grade students thought they were gathered to learn which student had won a bicycle after an essay challenge. One name was read. But then a second student won. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials have warned at least three local churches about having services indoors. The county sent out three letters to Skyline Church in La Mesa; Lighthouse Baptist Church in Lemon Grove; and Awaken Church's campus on Balboa Avenue in Kearny Mesa.The letters to Skyline and Lighthouse were very similar, saying indoor services create "significant risk of spreading COVID-19," encouraging the churches to move their in-person services outside. The third document is a cease-and-desist letter sent to Awaken Church ordering the church to stop indoor operations. All three letters are dated July 17 and are signed by County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten. The letters state that failure to comply with these orders can mean criminal misdemeanor citations with a fine of ,000 for each violation. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials Monday echoed Governor Gavin Newsom’s demand to close more businesses as coronavirus intensifies.The state announced Monday that it was closing indoor operations for places of worship, restaurants, wineries, movie theatres and family entertainment, zoos, museums, cardrooms, fitness centers, some offices, personal care services, hair salons and barbershops, and malls. All bars were also ordered to close."We are moving back into a modification mode of our stay-at-home order," Newsom said. The new order takes effect in San Diego at midnight Wednesday morning. The announcement comes as 419 more people throughout the county tested positive for coronavirus Monday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Police have identified the man shot and killed near a downtown parking garage in early December as 37-year-old Samuel Burkhalter.The shooting happened on the 1400 block of G Street around 10 p.m. on December 1.Police say they received several calls reporting gunshots in the area. After arriving, officers found Burkhalter at the entrance to a parking garage in the area. Officers provided first aid until relieved by San Diego Fire-Rescue, but say Burkhalter died at the scene.Investigators say a light-skinned man wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black hat was seen running through the garage after the shooting. The suspect was later identified as Tyler Cosby, 23. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Sailors from the USS Abraham Lincoln Strike Group are returning home after 294 days.Sailors left from their home port in Virginia in April and saw their deployment extended twice before coming to their new home port of Coronado.P02 John Aportela is one of the the 6,000 sailors that made up the strike group. Like many parents, he met his 6-month-old daughter for the first time.“I’m blessed to be back and I thank God for bringing us back safe." Sailors and Marines were involved with maritime security and combat missions while working with allies, including France, Bahrain, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Oman.Those missions took the crew across the globe to places like Singapore, Saipan, Philippines, Japan, Israel, Thailand, Australia, Maldives, Hong Kong, and other locations. The strike group's Helicopter Marine Strike Squadron 79, or "The Griffins," returned to NAS Coronado Sunday ahead of the carrier's arrival. That team was supposed to return before Halloween, but had their employment extended.The group's 10-month deployment was the longest carrier deployment since the Cold War.
