Just ask Lemon Grove resident Tiffany Klein, who had to explain to her 3-year-old son Nicholas, why the sky looked so smokey and gloomy over the last week."Ash was falling and the sky was dark, which was odd. So Nicholas asked me what was going on, he didn't quite understand."And when Tiffany told her son about the dangerous fires burning near Alpine, his response was a bit surprising for a young child."He asked if people were getting hurt," said Tiffany. "I told him, as of that time, that no one had gotten hurt, but some people had lost their homes. So he asked me if he could raise money by doing a lemonade stand."Despite being 3-years-old, Nicholas wanted to lend a hand, even if he wasn't quite sure what was going on."I wanted to help the people that lost their homes,"said Nicholas.And how could any parent say no to such a great request."I was mind blown. He said yes mommy, I want to help them find their homes, because he assumed they were lost."So the family went to work building a lemonade stand, and squeezing their own lemons."He had to build his own lemonade stand, and he went out and picked lemons from a lemon tree."By selling lemonade, he hoped to raise 7 dollars."Seven dollars is huge to him and i said OK, let's try to get that goal."Nicholas easily raised the 7 dollars, and a whole lot more."He doesn't understand what he did yet," says his mom. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Parents aren’t the only ones trying to figure out the new school year. Teachers are in the same boat, also dealing with the emotions of not being able to go back to the classroom right away.ABC 10News is following four teachers throughout the new school year, as they navigate the ups and downs this strange time brings.Dawn Harrison is a first grade teacher in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. Teaching is her passion."One of my favorite things is the lightbulb moment when they’re in the process of learning something and it clicks for them and you’re there to witness that click,” Harrison said. “I love their hugs. I love hearing about their day.”That personal interaction is gone for now with teachers preparing to go virtual for the new school year. For Harrison, with no biological children of her own, she views her students as her own children.“It’s devastating, not to get their hugs, their wanting to hold your hand, even the tugging on your shirt,” Harrison said.On top of the emotional connection, there are other questions when it comes to teaching first grade. “How am I going to teach six-year-olds to read via a computer? How am I going to teach them to think mathematically through a computer?” she asked.Harrison’s challenges are different than what her husband faces. Rick Meads is a teacher at Eastlake High School. With the older students, they are much more technologically savvy. “They’re going to be a lot more easily adapted,” he said.He teaches digital media, drama, and theater. He, along with so many other teachers and students, felt the sadness of having to cancel big school events. “The worst part was we were supposed to mount a major production at the school with the theater class and we had to cancel that. That was very disappointing for a lot of the kids,” Meads said.With the Sweetwater Union High School District starting Monday, Meads is preparing to adapt all of his lesson plans. For his classes, like drama and theater, he is going to focus on writing for the beginning of the school year. “In the past, we have written full-scale musicals [and] we’ve done plays,” he said.Kelly Martin is a sixth grade teacher in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. She also faced unique challenges going online with her students.“With adolescents, it’s a little different. Nobody wants to turn their camera on. No one wants to talk in front of anyone, everyone has their hoods on, so getting them engaged is a different challenge,” Martin said.All the teachers are struggling on when it is safe to go back. “I think there is a misconception that teachers don’t want to go back to school. We all want to go back to school,” Martin said.With roughly 3,000 students at Eastlake High School, Meads sees the challenge of how to keep students social distant.For Gina Chavez, a fourth and fifth grade teacher in the South Bay Union School District, she wants to know that students and teachers will be protected.“I want to know that we’re provided with PPE (sic). I want to know that we are going to have our classrooms sanitized,” Chavez said.She wants parents to know that there is a lot going on behind the scenes that many people don’t realize. “I’m in the middle of an eight-week course helping me to get better at teaching online,” Chavez said.“Somebody recently told me they’re calling it a ‘Coronacoaster’, and I think it’s really a good expression of how we’re feeling,” Martin added. 3463

Zillow?recently released some statistics on what new home buyers can expect to see when getting into the San Diego market. Zillow found that, over the last five years, starter homes are actually increasing in value faster than other homes.The site says the quick appreciation is due to the demand for entry-level homes growing faster than supply.RELATED: Del Mar home sells for more than million in San Diego housing milestoneHome value appreciation among affordable homes is beneficial for people who own homes, but makes it tough for buyers trying to get into the market, according to Zillow.In the San Diego metro, there are 26 percent fewer starter homes to choose from than in 2017, where the typical entry-level home is worth 6,300.But there's good news for those lucky enough to land a home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than 400,000 people in San Diego County have already cast their ballot for the November election."We are unprecedented, unchartered, in so many different ways in historic numbers of mail-in ballots that are coming back to our office," said Michael Vu with the San Diego Registrar of Voters. Saturday, Vu said the registrar had received 432,000 ballots have been cast. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Neighbors say overnight surveillance video of a tagger in action is a glimpse of an ongoing, frustrating problem.Near Euclid Avenue and Polk Avenue, there is a church, an elementary school, and a sight Leanne Montano has seen before."Sad they're destroying someone else's property," said Montano.Video shows what unfolded just down the street. Just before 2 a.m., a motion-activated light flashes, but these vandals are undeterred. With another man and a person on a bike nearby, someone in a cap and hoodie casually begins spray painting the back wall of a home. For more than 40 seconds, he tags the wall, before he and his cohorts leave.It appears they weren't done. 10News found similar tags on fences, and garage door after garage door. A block away at Euclid Elementary, there was more graffiti. Montano's place was spared, but her home has been hit several times before. She says tagging - including the school - is a weekly occurrence."Tagging leads to other activities that aren't safe. My concern as a parent and resident is the children's safety and them walking to school, feeling safe. It allows other people to treat our neighborhood like crap.
