SARASOTA, Fla. — The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office arrested 21 people during an Operation Intercept V, an initiative to protect Sarasota County children from online predators. The suspects, ranging in age from 22 to 58, responded to internet-based ads, online apps or social media sites and engaged in sexually explicit written and verbal conversations, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office.One of the suspects promised to stay with a 14-year-old child if he impregnated her while another agreed to have sex with who he believed was a 12-year-old. More than four of the men brought condoms and some offered to bring drugs. Several suspects sent explicit photos. They all traveled with the intent to have sex with a male or female child, according to deputies. “You would think the frequency of Internet predator operations here in Sarasota County and surrounding jurisdictions would reduce the number of criminals prowling online for the sole purpose of sexually exploiting children,” Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight said. “Unfortunately, for some reason, they still think it’s OK to disrupt our community and the children within it. Let this be a reminder for parents to stay cognizant of what their children are doing in this new age of technology. Remember to be a parent. SANTA ANA (CNS) - A man who drove drunk and veered into oncoming traffic while making a turn, slamming head-on into a minivan and killing a mother of three in Lake Forest, was convicted today of second-degree murder.William Joseph Carroll, 51, of Mission Viejo, had a blood-alcohol level of about 0.23 -- nearly three times the legal limit -- when his Ford F- 250 pickup truck slammed into a Toyota Sienna minivan driven by 36-year-old Ana Martinez about 11:40 p.m. May 7, 2013, Deputy District Attorney Daniel Feldman told jurors during the trial.Martinez, who was driving to work at the time, was "crushed to death" in the crash, Feldman said.The prosecutor said Carroll was making a left turn from El Toro Road to Santa Margarita Parkway in Lake Forest when he veered into oncoming traffic.A witness told investigators that Carroll ran a red light, he said. Witnesses "describe Mr. Carroll's truck like a train out of nowhere," Feldman said, adding that the force of the collision was like "100 mph" when combining the speeds of both vehicles.Carroll's attorney, Sara Ross, told jurors it was " a case of government overreach." Ross acknowledged that Carroll was "responsible for the killing of Ana Martinez, but he's not guilty of murder."Both drivers attempted to avoid each other, she said, adding that the intersection is "a bit confusing." "It's a very confusing road and you're going to need that context to determine whether this was a murder," Ross told jurors.Feldman said Carroll was charged with second-degree murder rather than vehicular manslaughter because when he was convicted of DUI on Sept. 11, 2008, he was warned he would be charged with murder in the event of involvement in a DUI-related death.Carroll faces 15 years to life in prison when he is sentenced Jan. 19. 1797

(KGTV) -- Schools in the Grossmont Union High School District reopened for in-person learning Tuesday, allowing students back on campuses for the first time since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March.A large number of students began in-class instruction on Tuesday, but there were many others who chose to remain at home for distance learning.ABC 10News was at Santana High School in Santee on Tuesday morning as students with masks on trickled onto campus. Each student underwent a health screening before heading into their classrooms.Under the district’s blended learning plan, reopening campuses to a limited number of students is step 2 out of 5. Each school will only have 25 percent of students on their campuses. These students have been split up into different groups A-D depending on factors like their course schedule.RELATED: In-person learning to resume for some in the Grossmont Union High School DistrictThe groups determine which day the students will come to school. Each group will attend in-person learning once a week; the rest of the time they’ll be learning from home. Class sizes will be made up of 8 to 12 students.GUHSD Superintendent Theresa Kemper said it took a lot of organization and brainstorming to make the plan work, making sure they followed the state COVID-19 guidelines while juggling the daily campus routines.Kemper “At the secondary level, you have students traveling to multiple classrooms, and so it took a lot of work in how to break them up in groups so we can have the hybrid model."As for the full-time distance learners, Kemper said they will continue on with their schedule as planned until they can fully reopen their schools.Kemper also added that the district will see how things will go in terms of in-person learning and they’ll continue monitoring the state COVID-19 numbers as they figure out the next step in their reopening plans. 1917

SANDUSKY, Ohio — Just as summer began, so did the immigration raids in northeast Ohio.The first one happened on June 5 at Corsos, a garden and flower center in Sandusky, Ohio where 114 people were arrested as their workday started.Two weeks later, U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided another company called Fresh Mark. ICE raided all three of the company's locations, including the one in Canton, Ohio. More than 140 workers were arrested there, many of them accused of using false identification to get their jobs."We want to support our families and we want to protect and defend them so that they don't get split apart which you see is happening all over the place," said Veronica Dahlberg, executive director of HOLA Ohio, a small, grassroots Latino organization based in northeast Ohio.Dahlberg and the folks at HOLA Ohio stepped in to pay some of the bonds for those arrested in Sandusky."So far we've helped 21 of the farm workers, so we post the bonds for them at the Cleveland Heights deportation office," Dahlberg said.HOLA Ohio has raised ,000 to put towards bonding out the workers, and so far they used over ,000.Dahlberg said the family reunions have been bittersweet."When you see those reunions and you can deliver mom to the children or dad back to the household and the people are just so happy," she said. "There's a lot of tears, a lot of hugs, a lot of sadness.
