Public speaking is one of the biggest fears. About 7 percent people in the U.S. have the fear, that's about 27 million Americans. But there are some steps you can take in your everyday life to beat the fear for good.This is the moment Anyeik Artis and all her classmates will see if she's overcome her fear of public speaking."My name is Anyeik and my speech is about what we think we are," Artis says. "It's all about the mindset you choose to be in that will determine your outcomes in life."She stuck to her notes and gave personal examples."My goal in life was to go to college when I was in high school," Artis explains.Eventually the notes were gone and the speech ended much differently than it began."Not everybody is going to be the same because our thoughts are so different," Artis says in closing. "So thank you."She made it back to her seat relieved."I kept shaking but I got through it.," Artis says.Then, she waited for feedback."There was way less fidgeting," said Oldile Fazioni, Artis' teacher at Community College of Denver. "You were more present, you were really looking at us strong with the strong eye contact."Fazioni helps her students overcome their fears. The first step is a starting exercise, where students make eye contact with their audience one person at a time."Try to change the speech from a speech to the audience to a conversation with that person," Fazioni says.Next, she teaches students to be in touch with their bodies. It works by consciously feeling your hands and feet to take attention away from the fears in your mind and become more present. But the biggest key she says is concentrating on content."The moment that the student is able to move away from the mind and into the verbal message and making sure that it is clear I see a huge shift in the confidence of the students," Fazoni says.And lastly, celebrate! Recognize how far you've come, even if you're not perfect."Let's value the mistakes just as much as we value the success because through the mistake or through their fault we really learned to become better speakers," Fazioni says.Fazioni says you don't have to be in a class to try these things out. RAMONA, Calif. (CNS) - A teenage boy was fatally struck by a pickup truck while riding a skateboard on a residential road in the San Diego Country Estates neighborhood of Ramona, authorities said Wednesday.The fatality occurred around 7:20 p.m. Tuesday on Barona Mesa Road near La Plata Court, in a neighborhood south of San Vicente Road, California Highway Patrol Officer Jeff Christy said.Two teenage boys were riding skateboards to the east in the eastbound lane of Barona Mesa Road and another teen was riding a bicycle eastbound in the westbound lane, Christy said. He said that when a 20-year-old Ramona man driving a 2001 Ford F-150 eastbound on Barona Mesa Road came around a left-hand curve in the road, the front of the truck one of the boys, who was riding his skateboard in the middle of the eastbound lane.The driver stopped immediately and began rendering medical aid to the victim, the officer said. Medical personnel also responded, but the youth was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending family notification.Intoxication was not a factor in the crash, Christy said. 1112

Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, questioned Dr. Anthony Fauci on Friday on why protests were permitted in the wake of the death of George Floyd amid the coronavirus pandemic.Jordan claimed that allowing protests while church services in some states have been scaled back due to the spread of the virus was "inconsistent."During the heated exchange, Dr. Fauci conceded that all mass gatherings, including protests, should be avoided by the public. But as Jordan tried to press Dr. Fauci into opining on limits to protests and church services, Dr. Fauci reiterated that he was not in a position to make such an opinion.“I don't understand what you're asking me as a public health official to opine on who should get arrested or not. RANCHO SANTA FE (KGTV): As the costs to grow avocado and citrus keep rising, farmers in San Diego are trying a new crop to put a jolt in their business: coffee."We’re excited about the possibilities," says Chuck Badger, who runs R.E. Badger and Sons. He's planted about 5,000 coffee plants across several farms that his business manages."The plants are very happy. They’ve got a lot of cherries on them. So we’re super excited for this summer to pick it."Badger says he heard about the possibilities of coffee from growers in Ventura County. San Diego's coastal climate and soil are similar to other coffee producing regions.The timing couldn't be better. In addition to dealing with the lingering drought, many farmers are getting frustrated with the rising production costs of avocado and citrus trees. They're looking for ways to diversify their crops.Badger says the upfront costs of coffee are a little higher, but the profit margins can be much better. He told 10News that coffee needs about 900 trees planted per acre, while citrus uses only 150.But, if the coffee grades out as a "premium" brand, farmers could net as much as ,000 per acre. Citrus and avocado trees bring in anywhere from ,000 to ,000 an acre, depending on the yield and other market factors.Leaders with the San Diego County Farm Bureau are excited about the potential as well, but caution that coffee is still in an "experimental" phase in the area."Nobody's all in at this point," says Executive Director Eric Larson. He points out that San Diego has around 50,000 acres of total farmland. Larson guesses that coffee makes up less than 20 total acres right now."Folks are seeing if it’s going to work here before they make a future decision to be all in," says LarsonHe says it could be a good crop to plant in conjunction with other established crops, doubling up acreage to increase profits.Badger thinks San Diego could become coffee country, in the same way Napa is known for wine."We want to model it after the whole wine growing template, where people are asking for certain varietals, certain regions, organic," he says. "So those coffee snobs become like those wine snobs and will pay for premium coffee."Badger won't be able to harvest any of his beans until next summer. RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) - Residents in Ramona are worried that SANDAG's new transportation plan could put their lives at risk in the event of a wildfire.The proposed 2021 Regional Plan, which hasn't been approved and won't be voted on until November, would move tax money away from freeways like State Route 67, and put more emphasis on transit.People in Ramona say that worries them, because the 67 was jammed the last few times fires forced an evacuation."It took a couple hours to get down to Scripps Poway Parkway," says Ramona resident Paul Pakus, who had to evacuate during 2007's Witch Fire.In 2004, voters approved a measure on the ballot for a 40 year, half-cent sales tax to fund transportation projects, commonly called the "TransNet Tax." Part of the bill specifically mentioned State Route 67, as well as a handful of other freeways.When SANDAG unveiled their new transportation plan last month, they said Transnet tax money would now go to pay for transit projects instead of freeways. That means a proposed expansion of the 67 could be shelved if the plan is approved by the SANDAG Board."It's a bait-and-switch," says County Supervisor Jim Desmond, who sits on the Board. "People in Ramona are very sensitive to this. They want to make sure they're safe in a fire and they want to make sure that the infrastructure is in place to do that."SANDAG says the TransNet Tax ballot proposition included language that allows SANDAG to change where the tax money goes as priorities change over time.Executive Director Hasan Ikhrata says, even after just 11 years of the tax, it's clear San Diego needs to invest more in mass transit and less in roads. He says that's a necessity if the area wants to hit state and federal mandates for greenhouse gas emission."People need to give us a chance and time to put this forth. And once we do, I think they will be more pleased with what we're telling them," says Ikhrata.He also assured 10News that SR-67 would still be a priority."Safety will be addressed, period," he told 10News in an exclusive interview. "The 67 safety issue will take top priority."Ikrata added that the plan is still a work in progress and SANDAG wants feedback from the public. They have a "Vision Lab" at their downtown offices that people can visit to give feedback.They also plan to form an advisory council, made up of at least 10 industry experts and leaders, to help finalize the 2021 Regional Plan.
