The first national-level association of Taiwan-funded enterprises held its inaugural ceremony in Beijing yesterday - a move which experts say will help boost cross-Straits economic integration and peace. "Taiwan business people are all over the mainland now," said Chang Han-wen, the newly-elected chairman of the Association of Taiwanese-invested Enterprises on the Mainland. According to conservative estimates, there are at least 1 million Taiwan business people on the mainland. The national-level association, comprising heads of Taiwan enterprise associations and representatives of Taiwan enterprises on the mainland, aims to serve the island's enterprises, protect their legal rights, boost relations with the ministries in Beijing and strengthen communication with mainland firms. Chen Yunlin, head of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, said the island has chalked up a huge trade surplus with the mainland and its trade with the mainland has become an indispensable driving force of Taiwan's economy. "The mainland market provides huge potential for the expansion and industrial upgrading of Taiwan enterprises," he said. Xu Shiquan, vice-chairman of the National Society of Taiwan Studies, said that the establishment of the association coincides with the mushrooming of Taiwan-funded enterprises on the mainland. "Besides their number and scale, more and more Taiwan enterprises are keen to upgrade their industrial structure into the hi-tech sector," he said. "Though they usually forge local associations, faster expansion and a larger scale require a higher level of coordination," he said. Feng Bangyan, director of the Institute of Taiwan Economy at Jinan University in Guangzhou, said the association, which brings together many business heavyweights, would definitely pressure Taiwan authorities to grant more freedom for economic growth. "The secessionists forces on the island can't hinder the ever-increasing economic bonds linking the two sides across the Straits," he said.

BEIJING - China's National People's Congress (NPC),the top legislature, published on Friday a list of all its new deputies.The Standing Committee of the 10th NPC confirmed the qualifications of all deputies to the 11th NPC at its last session on Thursday, making way for the upcoming election of a new Chinese leadership.Among all the 2,987 deputies were Chinese President Hu Jintao, and the other eight members of the current Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, including Wu Bangguo, Wen Jiabao, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, He Guoqiang and Zhou Yongkang.They were elected respectively from provincial-level areas of Jiangsu, Anhui, Gansu, Beijing, Sichuan, Shanghai, Liaoning, Hunan and Heilongjiang.All the deputies will attend the upcoming First Session of the 11th NPC, which is set to open on March 5.The deputies were elected from 35 electoral units across China, including all provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, and the People's Liberation Army (PLA).

BEIJING - China imported 139,900 sedans in 2007, up 25.13 percent over the previous year, with the largest share of 46 percent, or 63,800 units, coming from Germany, China Customs figures revealed.The sedan imports worth 5.01 billion US dollars, up 25.41 percent from the previous year, took up 45 percent of China's total automobile imports which has slightly overshot the previous year's total to stand around 310,889 units.China Trading Center for Automobile Import predicted late January that tariff reduction since July 1 had given a stimulus to China's consumption of overseas made automobiles, which could reach 300,000 in 2007.China customs figures showed about 79 percent of the imports were vehicles with an engine size of or larger than 2.5 liters.Japan exported 29,700 sedans to China, the second largest total, while the United States ranked third with 18,000 units.China's sedan exports, by contrast, more than doubled year-on-year to 188,600 units in 2007.Chery, the flag-bearer of Chinese brands, saw a 132-percent surge in exports in 2007, to 119,800 units. The carmaker, which has accelerated its expansion overseas in recent years, expected to export 180,000 units this year.Chang'an Automotive Group, China's fourth largest automaker, sold more than 40,000 cars overseas last year, against 21,700 in 2006.China, the world's third largest vehicle producer, after Japan and United States, found its auto output grow 22.9 percent to 9.04 million units last year, according to figures with the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the country's top economic planner.The NDRC deputy economic performance department director Zhu Hongren said, since quantity was not a problem anymore, auto producers should increase their focus on quality.In 2006, China overtook Japan to become the world's second largest car market after the United States, with sales of 7.2 million units, up 25.13 percent year-on-year.Compared with their international counterparts, China's auto makers are still small in terms of production scale and behind in technology. Viruses wreaked havoc on at least 1 million personal computers during the weeklong National Day holiday, according to Jiangmin Co, a leading Chinese antivirus company.The company's monitoring system detected that more than 118,000 computers crashed on October 6 alone."Viruses have been extremely active during the long vacation because more people chose to stay at home and surf the Internet, shopping online or playing online games," He Gongdao, an antivirus expert at Jiangmin, said on Monday."More than 24,000 types of viruses were detected during the week," he said.He said computer users should be more aware of viruses that could be passed on through movable disks.Another antivirus company, Kingsoft, alerted the online community to a new virus it dubbed the "ultimate killer to antivirus software".The virus, a kind of Trojan, is capable of hijacking all kinds of antivirus software when it successfully attacks a computer."It will also automatically search the keywords, including 'antivirus, Kingsoft and Kaspersky', and coercively close the programs, Li Tiejun, an antivirus software engineer of Kingsoft, said."The virus has been supported and spread by a group of people who have developed a systematic and standardized business operation to make profit," Li said. Virus controllers could detect the IP addresses of each computer, he added.The new virus, which affected about 40,000 computers a day, will remain a critical threat to many computer users even after the holiday, Li said.According to the latest survey conducted by the Ministry of Public Security, China has encountered a rising Internet security problem over the past three years, mainly triggered by a growing number of profit-driven computer virus writers, hackers and illegal traders.Some 65.7 percent of 15,000 companies polled had suffered Internet security problems from May last year to May this year, 11.7 percentage points higher than before.

The Bank of Communications (BoCom), China's fifth largest lender, said its net profit reached20.3 billion yuan (2.86 billion U.S. dollars) in 2007, up 65 percent from 2006.     By the end of 2007, total assets of BoCom stood at 2.1 trillion yuan, up 22.7 percent from a year earlier, according to its 2007 annual report released on Wednesday.     Net interest rate income rose 36 percent to 54.1 billion yuan and fee income from credit card sales and asset management products surged 137 percent to 7.1 billion yuan.     The Shanghai-based bank and HSBC Holdings Plc., which holds a roughly 19 percent stake in BoCom, are preparing to establish a credit card company and a pension fund company, according to the report.     BoCom, which listed on the Hong Kong stock market in 2005, returned to the mainland's A share market in April last year. Its shares rose 2.77 percent to 10.39 yuan in Shanghai on Wednesday.
