VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis says the Christmas season provides reason for hope amid the difficulties of the coronavirus pandemic. Francis noted during his Sunday blessing that the Vatican’s Christmas tree had gone up this week in St. Peter’s Square, and work is underway to build the life-size Nativity scene next to it. Francis pointed to the tree from his studio window over the square and said such symbols of Christmas “are signs of hope, especially in this difficult period.” He urged the faithful to recall the true meaning of Christmas and lend a hand to the neediest. UNIVERSITY CITY (KGTV) -- Several University City residents were rescued from their apartment balconies early Monday morning after their building became flooded in up to four feet of water from a busted fire hydrant.The incident first started around 1:30 a.m. when a motorist in an SUV crashed into a fire hydrant in the 9000 block of Genesee Avenue, in front of the Canyon Park Apartments across from La Jolla Country Day School.The sheared fire hydrant created a geyser that flooded the adjacent apartment building. Several lower level units became submerged in up to four feet of water. Some residents were forced out onto their balconies as waterfalls cascaded through their apartments and into the canyon below.Firefighters were able to rescue those trapped on their balconies without further incident. It took crews about a half hour to turn off the water.The American Red Cross was called in to help 22 adults, six dogs and a cat arrange for another place to stay.The driver told officers he fell asleep before crashing into the fire hydrant, San Diego Police officer Tony Martinez said. 1107

Using state and local data, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association found that there have been nearly 500,000 coronavirus infections among children since the start of the pandemic. The findings were for known coronavirus cases through September 3.Children comprise nearly 9.8% of all COVID-19 cases, the report found.The report found that as of September 3, 4,321 children have been hospitalized by the virus, comprising 1.7% of all coronavirus-related hospitalizations. Hospital data only covered 23 states and NYC.Children made up .07% of coronavirus deaths, with 103 children reportedly dying from COVID-19 related illnesses. Mortality data was unavailable for seven states.So far in 2020, there have been 190,000 coronavirus-related deaths, and public health experts expect the number of fatalities to increase through the rest of the year.While the coronavirus has proven to be much more deadly for adults, especially seniors, it appears to be less deadly for children compared to influenza. According to CDC data, an estimated 477 children died from the flu in 2018-19, a season when flu-related illnesses killed an estimated 34,157 across the US.There were some inconsistencies in the coronavirus data, the report acknowledged, including how states define children. Also some states did not have hospital or mortality data.While children have largely been spared the worst effects of the coronavirus, there are still questions on how easily children can spread the virus to others. That concern has prompted a number of school districts to continue with virtual learning at the start of the 2020-21 school year.In July, a study released from South Korea and published by the CDC found that while children under age 9 were less likely to spread the virus, youth ages 10 through 19 were just as likely as adults to spread it.The study also found that closing schools in several Chinese cities, including Wuhan, and social distancing significantly reduced the rate of COVID-19 among contacts of school-aged children.“The role of household transmission of SARS-CoV-2 amid reopening of schools and loosening of social distancing underscores the need for a time-sensitive epidemiologic study to guide public health policy,” the researchers wrote. 2290

Victims who endured mental, physical, and sexual abuse at the hands of wealthy Palm Beach hedge fund manager Jeffrey Epstein and his co-conspirators can now start filing compensation claims against his estate.Earlier this month, a U.S. Virgin Islands probate judge gave the go-ahead for the Epstein Victims' Compensation Program to begin accepting claims starting on Thursday, June 25.An estimated 0 million has been allocated to the fund."Jeffrey Epstein has failed, and his victims have won," said attorney Spencer Kuvin, who represents four of Epstein's accusers. "Hopefully this is the first page of the final chapter of the Epstein saga."Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, Kuvin said the fund is only open for less than a year, and money will be distributed to victims based upon their allegations that can be proven.Victims who have more evidence and more significant damages will receive more money, Kuvin said."It is imperative that anyone who believes they're a victim of Jeffrey Epstein come forward now. Your identities will remain confidential throughout the process," said Kuvin. "It is for all victims to apply. This includes women that have never come forward before. It includes women that have filed lawsuits. It includes women whose only evidence is their tragic memory of the events. University of Notre Dame President Rev. John Jenkins has tested positive for COVID-19, the school announced Friday.According to the school, Jenkins was in self-isolation this week after learning that a colleague "with whom he has been in regular contact" tested positive for the virus. A subsequent test revealed that Jenkins had also tested positive for the virus."My symptoms are mild and I will continue to work from home," Jenkins said in a statement. "The positive test is a good reminder for me and perhaps all of how vigilant we need to be."Jenkins' test comes hours after President Donald Trump announced that he had also tested positive for the virus.
