BEIJING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has ordered the armed forces and civil aviation department to deploy 90 more helicopters for rescue missions in quake-hit Sichuan province.     The decision was made at a late Wednesday evening meeting of the national quake relief headquarters held on a running train from Sichuan provincial capital Chengdu to Guangyuan city about 200 kilometers away. Wen Jiabao arrived on Wednesday at Beichuan County, one of the regions worst hit by Monday's massive earthquake, to oversee the rescue work.China's air force will deploy 60 more helicopters and the other 30 will be provided by the civil aviation industry, according to the headquarters headed by Wen himself.     An earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, struck Wenchuan County of southwestern Sichuan Province Monday afternoon, killing almost 15,000 people nationwide.     Since the rescue missions started on Monday, 20 helicopters have been dispatched to quake-hit areas for reconnaissance, food and water airdropping, transporting injured people and delivering rescuers. Premier Wen urged in the meeting that saving people's lives was still the top priority of the disaster relief work more than 50 hours after the quake.     "We must use all our forces, and save lives at whatever costs. Life is the most precious thing, we must be amenable to the people and the history," Wen said.     Forty-four counties and districts in Sichuan were severely affected by the quake. About half of the 20 million population in these areas were directly affected by the quake, according to the meeting. Since most of the quake-hit areas are mountainous villages, thousands of rescuers and hundreds of tons of materials were held up on the ways, blocked by rocks and mud shaken down from roadside, to the quake's epicenter, making air support a vital need.     China's air force, army aviation and civil aviation have made ever largest noncombat air operation since Monday, mobilizing more than 150 airplanes in various relief missions.     The air force has deployed more than 40 transporters which delivered about 8,600 rescuers and 200 tons of materials with more than 130 flights in 48 hours after quake. Among them are 1,620 people seriously injured, according to information from the meeting.

BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- An aftershock measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale jolted Damxung County in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region at 10:07 p.m. on Wednesday, the China Earthquake Administration said.     The epicenter was 29.8 degrees north and 90.4 degrees east, and was 9 km underground, according to the State Seismological Network.     There was no report of casualties at the epicenter but one house collapsed, according to the quake-relief headquarters.     Damxung, 82 km from Tibet's capital Lhasa, was hit by a 6.6-magnitude earthquake and a 5.2-magnitude aftershock on Monday. More than 350 armed police officials and soldiers were dispatched to attend the quake-relief work immediately after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake jolted Damxung County near Lhasa at 4:30 p.m. (Beijing Time) on Monday.    Cars were shaken for a few seconds in Yangyi Village, the worst-hit area in the first quake, but no major damage was reported in the county, according to Zhu Quan, head of the Tibet earthquake bureau.     However, Lhasa residents felt the aftershock and poured into the streets carrying food, drinking water and blankets. Some said they would spend the night outside out of safety concerns.     Dainzhen, 33, sat in his car along with his wife in the square of Ramogia Monastery. "More than 50 neighbors decided to sleep here tonight because our 20-year-old house seems not safe," he said.     However, experts said the aftershock was a natural process during the quake force recession.     Zhu said there was no need to panic.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan said on Thursday the country is fully confident and capable of overcoming the current economic difficulties, vowing to work closely with other countries to safeguard stability of the global financial market.     Wang, in his meeting with former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, said China has already taken relevant measures to face up to the turbulences of the international financial market.     As the largest developing country and a rising market, China's priority is to well handle its own problems, he said.     He believes China has great potential in domestic market and economic growth, adding the country would continue to take measures to maintain the stable and relatively fast economic development.     "The Chinese government is to strengthen coordination with other countries to face up to the global crisis and promote the stability of the global economic and financial market," Wang told Schroeder.     He appreciated the former German Chancellor's contribution to cementing bilateral ties. Regarding both countries as important trade, investment and technical cooperation partners, Wang said to further facilitate bilateral trade cooperation complies with the fundamental interests of both sides.     Schroeder extended congratulations to China's full success in holding the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics. BEIJING, July 2 (Xinhua) -- China senior political advisors gathered here Wednesday, to learn about the country's economic situation and developments in the earthquake relief and reconstruction campaign.     Jia Qinglin, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee and member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, presided over the inaugural session of the second meeting of the Standing Committee of the 11th CPPCC National Committee.     Jia praised CPPCC members for their participation in the earthquake relief campaign.     The relief situation remained serious and the tasks were still very heavy, Jia said. The CPPCC was responsible and duty-bound to contribute to the relief and reconstruction work.
