Plans to build a new 4-acre, .5 million park in National City got a boost this week, thanks to a partnership with the federal government.The Environmental Health Coalition will help the city plan the park and the surrounding area, to make sure people can access the park without having to drive there.National City is one of just 10 communities across the country chosen for the Safe Routes to Parks Initiative.The new park will be near 22nd Street and Harding, where an empty field sits right now. As part of the construction, the EHC will help design safer streets around the park."Kids are trying to get from point a to point b and they have to cross through that main road," explains City Engineer Jose Lopez. "Without enhancements to the road, there's no way a 10-year old or 5-year old can cross the street."The EHC will help the city plan curb extensions, a median refuge island in crosswalks and local trails to let people walk through parks instead of along busy streets.According to a release announcing the partnership, communities chosen for the program had high rates of crime and violence, and also high rates of weight-related chronic diseases. The Safe Routes to Parks program  hopes to increase park use and help communities become healthier and safer.Right now the park is still in the planning stages. Part of the cure for COVID-19 might be found in sharks dwelling deep in our oceans.“Everybody’s, ‘oh, there’s a hundred million being taken anyway, why are you worried about vaccine?’” said Stefanie Brendl of Shark Allies, a nonprofit for shark conservation.She says during the pandemic, more sharks are being harvested for squalene, an oil found in their livers and is often used to increase the effectiveness of vaccines.“The more products we come up with that require shark parts, the more we’re fueling this 100,000,000 sharks a year number,” she said.Brendl says many pharmaceutical companies are using shark squalene to produce a coronavirus vaccine and that if everyone in the world received two doses, 500,000 sharks would have to be slaughtered to meet the demand.“We need to look at this and we need to hold the vaccine companies accountable to test alternatives,” she said.One of the companies, Brendl, is calling out pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline, which plans on manufacturing 1 billion doses of a “pandemic vaccine” in 2021.While GSK says squalene pulled from shark livers is used in some of its vaccines, the company claims it’s also exploring squalene found in some plants.“One research team has tried to make in yeast so you could grow cultures of yeasts similar to fermenting beer,” said David Kroll, Ph.D., a professor of pharmacology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus.He says finding a cure for coronavirus will be the biggest vaccine undertaking in recent medical history.“The biggest concern is whether more sharks are going to have to be killed for this monumental global effort,” Kroll said.Shark experts believe this is a global challenge.“Many of the sharks that are being targeted are deep sea sharks and they’re found in open ocean environments that may not be protected,” said Chris Lowe, a professor of marine biology and director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach.He says tens of millions of sharks are already killed each year and some companies poach shark corpses for squalene to make numerous products ranging from vaccines to cosmetics.Lowe warns an increase in killings could impact our ecosystem.“Those animals play a very important role that could affect people on land,” he said.While the cost of a cure for COVID-19 is still unknown, Lowe says killing more sharks could mean extinction for several shark species. 2414

Passengers with peanut and tree-nut allergies will soon have the option to board American Airlines flights early to wipe down seating areas of potential allergens.The new policy goes into effect December 12 as flight-service manuals are updated."American Airlines customers with nut allergies who would like to board our flights early to wipe down surfaces may ask to do so at the gate," said American Airlines spokeswoman Michelle Mohr. The policy was first reported by Bloomberg.Passengers are free to wipe down their seating areas of potential allergens at any time, but the new policy gives extra consideration to concerned allergy sufferers."I certainly understand the deep, deep concern people have, especially parents with young children," Mohr said. Mohr herself suffers from a severe nut allergy and carries an EpiPen.The airline encourages passengers to take all necessary medical precautions before flying, she said.American Airlines hasn't served peanuts in years, but it does serve a combination of warm mixed nuts to First and Business class passengers on trans-oceanic flights, Mohr said. That mixture does not contain peanuts.But the airline cannot guarantee that customers won't be exposed to peanuts or tree nuts on any flight as passengers may bring their own snacks aboard or transfer nut residue from other places.The new policy was included in a filing with the U.S. Transportation Department on November 6. Even worse, pigeons and their droppings carry over 60 diseases.When it comes to these nuisance birds, Todd Wagner of a Better Day Pigeon Control has seen it all.“From the roof caving in from so much feces. The gas stations also, I've seen some of them. So much feces the wind and the rain. If it gets a good rain it will blown right over,” says Wagner.He recommends taking these measures to help keep pigeons out.“Don't feed the animals outside, cats and dogs outside they love that food.
