NANNING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- China and member states on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are seeking new cooperation opportunities at the 7th China-ASEAN Expo while reviewing fruitful results from more than nine months' operation of China-ASEAN free trade area (CAFTA).The 7th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) and China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit, with the theme of free trade and new opportunities, opens Tuesday in Nanning, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.Buoyed by the zero-tariff framework under the CAFTA, more than 2,000 enterprises from home and abroad are taking part in the 7th CAEXPO, which has 4,600 exhibition booths. Jia Qinglin (C Front), chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, announces the opening of the 7th China-ASEAN Expo (CAEXPO) in Nanning, capital of southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Oct. 19, 2010.Top Chinese political advisor Jia Qinglin, Indonesian Vice President Boediono, and other high-ranking officials, businessmen and scholars from China and the 10 ASEAN nations also gathered in the southern Chinese city to attend the opening of the expo and the summit. The much-anticipated CAFTA was formally launched on Jan.1, 2010. With a population of 1.9 billion and a combined gross domestic product (GDP) of 6 trillion US dollars, the CAFTA ranks as the world's third largest trade zone following North American FTA and the European FTA.From January to September, the two-way trade volume reached 211.3 billion U.S. dollars, up 44 percent year-on-year, an eye-catching growth as the world economy just saw a turnaround after the financial crisis.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said in a keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the summit that cementing and reinforcing the China-ASEAN strategic partnership is in the common interests of the two sides.
BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Fire has been put out at the scene of a July 16 blast involving two oil pipelines in Dalian, a port city in northeast China's Liaoning Province, by 2 a.m. Monday, the contingency headquarter said. The contingency headquarter said no crude oil has been found spilled over into the sea, and no ocean pollution has been detected. The fire was caused by the remaining oil in a tank which had been emptied before workers tried to remove it at 4:10 p.m.. No casualties have been reported. The tank, owned by China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC), caught fire on July 16 when two pipelines at Dalian Xingang Harbor exploded.
BAISE, Guangxi, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- Tired? How about sitting down and having a cup of coffee in a cozy cafe some 150 meters underground in a real coal mine? This is not day dreaming on the part of China's miners who usually toil down in the mine for meager wages and sometimes have to risk their lives.A coal mine operator in Baise city, southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, has set up a cafe in the Donghuai Coal Mine as a part of the measures taken to improve underground working conditions, Xinhua reporters saw.Miners now can enjoy light music, crack a joke with loved ones through a walkie-talkie, or simply take a nap in the cafe. There are also sets of desks and chairs, potted plants and even a fish bowl."We have left no loop-holes in safety checks and try to do more," said Yi Peiyi, a deputy director of the local mining administration. He said the city plans to spend 80 million yuan (12 million U.S. dollars) to make mines modern and safe beginning in 2005.China's coal mines were notorious for accidents in the past few years as mines, including many with inadequate safety measures, were pushed to run at maximum capacity to meet the massive energy needs of a fast growing economy.More than 2,600 miners were killed in China's mining accidents last year. However, the death toll was already significantly less than those recorded in previous years.Last month, China's mine workers and bosses joined the world in cheering the successful rescue of 33 Chilean miners and were awed at the professional and modern working conditions of their Chilean counterparts.Additionally, industry authorities and safety watchdog officials have ordered mine bosses to double their efforts to improve safety measures and underground working conditions.
YICHANG, Hubei, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The water level at the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest water control project, reached 164.59 meters on Sunday, only 10 meters short of its full capacity of 175-meters, said a project official. The dam in central China started to hold back water this September by discharging less to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the country's longest river.Reaching the 175-meter water level would enable the Three Gorges Dam to fulfill its functions of flood control and generating electricity to the fullest extent, symbolizing the total success of the massive water project. This is the reservoir's third attempt to reach full capacity since 2008. However, water levels stopped at 172.8 meters in 2008 and 171.43 meters in 2009 due to droughts on the lower reaches. However, this time officials believe the dam will reach full capacity by the end of October."We have confidence in reaching the goal this year. Although less water flowed into the dam after the flood season, we have reduced water discharges accordingly," said Yuan Jie, an official in charge of water level control.
