(KGTV) - A nun died in court Friday during a proceeding related to the legal battle against the Los Angeles Archdiocese and singer Katy Perry.Sister Catherine Rosse Holzman, 89, died in court during the proceeding related to the sale of a Los Feliz property, according to ABC-affiliate KABC.Holzman was part of an order of nuns known as The Sisters of the Most Holy and Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The order owned a hilltop property that used to be a convent but sold it in 2015 to entrepreneur Dana Hollister. The Archdiocese intervened, however, saying the offer was void because the order did not get the sale approved by the Archdiocese or Pope Francis. This led to the court battle over whether Hollister, who offered million for the property, was a suitable buyer as opposed to Perry, who offered .5 million.Perry's offer has the approval of Los Angeles' archbishop but has yet to gain approval by the Vatican.A judge ruled in favor of Perry in 2016, saying the archdiocese has to first authorize any sale, and the nuns didn't have his permission before entering into the agreement with Hollister. 1179

(KGTV) - Authorities in Northern California have issued an arrest warrant for a former Southwestern College football player after he failed to appear in court in a sexual assault case. The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office said 25-year-old Raul Sierra failed to show up for two hearings, including one on March 7.The former Southwestern College and Humboldt State University student-athlete was arrested in 2016 for a sexual assault that officials say occurred in a campus residence hall at HSU in 2015.Sierra was charged originally with acquaintance rape “by use of drugs” in 2016 after taking a plea bargain. However, subsequent court records show that Sierra pleaded no contest to lesser charges of felony false imprisonment and misdemeanor assault in 2016.Court records show that Sierra is supposed to serve community service and undergo counseling through a court program.Sierra attended Castle Park High school before playing at Southwestern College and walking-on at Humboldt State University. 1031

(KGTV and wire reports) -- In a lengthy press conference with reporters in the White House Rose Garden on Friday afternoon, President Donald Trump said he would consider building a wall without approval from Congress. His remarks came after he met with Democratic Congressional leaders, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, about ending the partial government shutdown. "Yes, I have. And I can do it if I want," Trump told a reporter when he was asked if has considered using emergency powers to build his wall and secure the .6 billion needed for construction. The reporter then asked if that means he doesn't need Congressional approval to build the wall."Absolutely," Trump said. "We can call a national emergency. I haven't done it. I may do it. I may do it. We can call a national emergency and build it very quickly. It's another way of doing it."The White House message during the shutdown has been that there is a "national security emergency" at the border.Asked if that was a threat to Democrats, Trump replied, "I never threaten anybody, but I am allowed to do it -- call a national emergency."ABC News, citing sources, reported Friday that Trump's administration could reprogram funds from the Department of Defense and elsewhere – a move which would circumvent Congress – to build the wall. "Sources tell ABC News the discussions are still on the 'working level' adding that there's a range of legal mechanisms that are being considered before such a decision is announced," ABC News reported.CNN reported that Trump and three officials from the Department of Homeland Security met in December to look at "options that would allow Trump to build the border wall by tapping into military funding if he was unable to secure the money he wants from Congress.""Two officials said that the Pentagon believes that there is roughly -2 billion that could be set aside from the Defense Department budget to fund this effort," CNN reported.Trump is facing newly empowered House Democrats who are refusing to budge issue of wall funding.Trump and top democrats met early Friday for nearly two hours. Both sides had differing views about the meeting -- Pelosi called the meeting "contentious" while Trump said the talks were "productive."On Thursday, Pelosi dug into the Democrats refusal to fund Trump's wall. "We are not doing a wall," calling the proposed structure an "immorality."Trump said there are plans to continue discussions on ending the shutdown through the weekend. It was not clear who would be part of those meetings.ABC News and CNN contributed to this report. 2627

(KGTV) — Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a series of bills on Wednesday aimed at reforming the criminal justice system in California. The series of bills signed by Newsom intends to increase oversight of the criminal justice system, amid nationwide calls for police reform. Newsom and advocates hailed the new laws as first steps in reforming policing in the state.“I hope people recognize we’re moving in the right direction, and again I just recognize we have a lot more work to do in this space and we are not walking away from that responsibility,” Newsom said. The bills signed will enact several reforms including:AB-1196: A ban on arm-based grips, including chokeholds that apply pressure to a person's windpipe, and to carotid holds, which slow the flow of blood to the brain.AB-1506: Requiring the state attorney general to investigate fatal police shootings of unarmed civilians.AB-1185: Allowing county supervisors to create oversight board and inspectors general with subpoena powers over independently elected sheriffs.AB-2542: Suspects could be entitled to new trials or sentences if they can demonstrate racial bias played a role in any part of their case.AB-3070: Allowing judges to assess whether lawyers illegally exclude jurors based on their race.SB-823: Will phase out California's remaining juvenile prisons. The state will instead create an Office of Youth and Community Restoration and send grants to counties to provide custody and supervision.Several other measures that would have sought further reforms did not make it past the closing hours of the legislative session last month, including efforts to release police misconduct records, require officers to intervene if they see excessive force, limits officers' use of rubber bullets and tear gas, and end the careers of officers who commit serious misconduct. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 1886

(KGTV) — Did a neurologist create an image that tells you how stressed you are based on how much you perceive it moving? No.The image being sent around is a cool optical illusion that tricks your mind into thinking it’s moving. But it has nothing to do with testing your stress level. 290
