SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego declared Thursday, August 6, as "Officer Jonathan Wiese Day."Wiese was the San Diego police officer who saved two-year-old twin girls after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs in June. The officer also saved the girls' father from the water.On Thursday, a proclamation was read and presented during a virtual Rancho Bernardo Community Council meeting.Wiese said he didn't rescue the girls for recognition, but said it was nice to see community support.The rescue happened early in the morning on June 13. Wiese, a K-9 officer, rappelled off a cliff using his 100-foot long dog leash to help.Wiese told 10News he is actually scared of heights and was thankful that it was dark the morning of the rescue.He joked that his wife told him he wouldn't have to wash the dishes on his day and that he hoped he'd get a free cup of coffee.Wiese was also the officer that helped take the suspected Poway Synagogue shooter into custody in April 2019. 989

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The iconic California Tower reached a major milestone Wednesday, welcoming its 100,000th visitor after it reopened in 2015.The tower was built in 1915 but closed in 1935 amid the great depression. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The conference and convention industry has been hard-hit by the pandemic.With limitations on gatherings and worry about health, most of the in-person part of the industry came to a standstill."COVID-19 has made this year an extraordinarily challenging and unpredictable year," said President and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center Rip Rippetoe.By Rippetoe's numbers, from March through the end of 2020, they'll have lost more than 100 events at the convention center.Rippetoe said the estimated financial loss to the San Diego region is more than one billion dollars."It doesn't just include us," said Rippetoe. "There are restaurants, hotels, attractions, retail. All the things that people may not realize are affected."It's the same problem for spots up and down the state and across most of the country."We have had zero conferences, I believe since March," said Madonna Inn Marketing Manager Amanda Rich.The Madonna Expo Center in San Luis Obispo can hold around 2,000 people, and prior to COVID-19, they hosted multiple events a week."It's been a huge change for us and our staff," Rich said. "We have a banquet staff that's here specifically for those expo events, and we haven't had any."Virtual EventsWhile in-person locations have suffered, for many conferences, the show still goes on, virtually."A virtual event is not here to replace an in-person event," said Jonathan Kazarian, founder and CEO at Accelevents. "It's not intended to even be modeled exactly like that. A virtual event is its own beast and its own opportunity.”Kazarian said his virtual event platform helps build opportunities for exhibitors to interact with attendees, ways to facilitate all those presentations virtually, and also helps to bring people together."We're working with a lot of software companies now that do these user conferences that maybe in the past they've spent this massive budget on hosting this event once a year and now for a fraction of the cost they can come in and host that event and with the click of a button re-do it month after month,” he said.Kazarian explained that virtual turnout for some companies has been higher than what they were used to seeing in person.But can the event really be the same? 2246

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The city updated the Sherman Heights community and surrounding neighborhoods Wednesday evening, about the transitional homeless storage facility that's set to open.  The facility is scheduled to open at the corner of the Commerical and 20th Streets on June 13.  It's been a controversial project from the beginning. The storage facility will hold 500 units for homeless people to store their things while they look for work and get back on their feet.  RELATED:  514

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thanksgiving with the Salvation Army will be different in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic."We knew that we were going to do something," says Captain Sean Kelsley, who oversees the Salvation Army East County Operations. "The question was, what would it look like?"For the past 30 years, the Salvation Army held large, family-style gatherings to feed people experiencing homelessness, the disabled, and families in need at Golden Hall for Thanksgiving. They plan for 1,800 people, plus volunteers.But a gathering of 2,000+ people is strictly forbidden under California and San Diego County COVID-19 guidelines.In its place, the Salvation Army will offer "grab-and-go" style meals at four locations around the county."We're just glad to be able to be here," says Captain Kelsey.
