SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 32-year-old man is expected to survive a stab wound to the abdomen after being attacked by a suspect who rode up on a bicycle and assaulted him on a bridge in the Hillcrest community of San Diego, police said.The victim was with friends on a bridge in the 3900 block of Vermont Street when the bicyclist rode up about 9 p.m. Saturday and stabbed him once in the abdomen, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.The suspect rode away southbound on the bridge. Paramedics rushed the 32-year-old man to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.No description of the suspect was available. SAN DIEGO — Some parents are keeping their children out of school Tuesday to protest the San Diego Unified School District’s sex education curriculum.A group of parents say the district’s Sexual Health Education Program (SHEP) is too graphic and not age-appropriate for their students, and they are urging district officials to eliminate the program.The parents have taken their concerns to the district’s School Board, but they said board members refuse to replace the curriculum.District officials said students can opt out of the course, but parents want the images they consider graphic gone.Ashley Bever, a substitute teacher who is organizing the one-day protest, said she was surprised to see all of the materials student had access to.“I thought a 6th grade teacher did not write this. Where it did come from? Why is it so explicit? Why is it telling kids they have sexual rights apart from their parents?” Bever said.The group is scheduled to hold a rally at the district’s office in University Heights at 4 p.m., just before the School Board’s meeting. 1075

SALT LAKE CITY — A Colorado photographer says he watched the infamous monolith in southeast Utah fall to the ground and says he knows exactly how and why it disappeared last weekend.The mystery monolith captured world-wide attention and intrigue after its discovery in a remote area southwest of Moab, on a 4x4 road near the Canyonlands Needles District. The silvery metallic structure has even inspired copycats to be erected on the other side of the world.How it ended up in a secret spot a half a mile off the road is still a mystery, but photographer Ross Bernards is shedding light on how it vanished-- and what the group who took it said to him as they hauled it away in pieces.Ross Bernards goes on adventures for his career."I'm an adventure and outdoor lifestyle photographer, that's what I do for a living," he said. "So, my job depends on me finding unique and cool places."The photographer, who is based in Colorado, explained that he's also a certified canyoneering guide. Bernards said he's worked with outdoor brands like Kelty, Sierra Designs, and Utah-based Ogden Made.He often finds himself in some of the most remote places in Utah, and said eastern Utah is his "happy place."When a middle-of-nowhere spot in his happy place found itself in the middle of an international monolith mystery last week, Bernards decided to check it out in person.He said he wanted to go out to the monolith before it disappeared, or before the masses found out."I wanted to go out there and try light painting with my drone," Bernards said.Just a couple of days after reading an article on the metal formation, Bernards realized the coordinates were posted online. Realizing time was of the essence, he and three friends make the several-hour trek on Friday.They arrived after dark, and Bernards explained they ended up with the monolith all to themselves.The four of them took pictures of the monolith in the moonlight. About an hour later, Bernards described what he saw after he said four other visitors walked up."Two of them stand back, two of them walk forward and walk up to the monolith and start pushing on it a little bit," he recounted. "And then one of them turns to my friends who are a little bit further up the canyon next to it-- where I was a little further back-- and said, 'Hope you got your photos.'"After that, Bernards said the two gave the monolith a couple of big pushes, and it began to lean over."That's when the rest of them came up, and all four of them pushed it over to the one side, and then pushed it back to another side," he remembered. "And it just fell straight onto the ground."Just like that, Bernards watched the monolith that captivated and mystified people across the globe, topple over."Right after it had fallen over and made a loud 'thud,' one of them said, 'This is why you don't leave trash in the desert,'" Bernards said.He explained the group began to break the monolith down into pieces to throw in a wheelbarrow."As they were loading it up and walking away, they just said, 'Leave no trace,' and left," he said.Bernards explained that he and his friends camped out overnight, and even cleaned up some of the rivets left behind from the fall of the monolith.Fast forward to the next morning-- the message from the monolith demolishers on his mind-- Bernards would find he was hardly the only person who set out to see the strange metal sculpture in person.He took pictures that show several vehicles lined up and parked on the roadway, with more driving down toward the area."You could see the road from the dust just coming up, and you could just see car-after-car coming and going," Bernards said. "I mean, we probably saw 70 or 80 different cars there."He said there were several people in each car, some with dogs wandering off-leash.Bernards talked about how he saw people walking everywhere on the land, some even hiking up the wrong canyon in search of the monolith.Not to mention, the people had swarmed an area miles up a high clearance, 4x4 road. Bernards described seeing minivans and sedans trying to navigate the road.He expressed a worry that this would lead to search and rescue calls, and place an undue burden on local authorities as well as the Bureau of Land Management."It made me understand exactly why these people did it," he said. "One of the reasons that we didn't stop them, is we all agreed with them."Bernards said he's been called out by people saying that he was part of the problem, and he said he completely understands.Bernards said that he practices the "leave no trace" principle and expressed that his job is to visit off-the-beaten-path places, responsibly.He also explained he has a lot of experience with cross-desert navigation and 4-wheel driving.Still, he said he felt guilty afterward about making the trip.After seeing the number of people who showed up, Bernards said the monolith didn't need to be out there."Leave the art to places where art should be and let mother nature have her space for art," he said.And for anyone who is buying into the conspiracy theories about how and why around the mystery metal monument and its sudden disappearance, Bernards can at least set the record straight."Aliens were not involved in any way, shape, or form in this thing. They had nothing to do with it. Nor was it some secret government project. None of that had anything to do with it" Bernards said, with a smile and chuckle. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A group of senators, including California's Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, introduced a bill Thursday to address health, safety and quality-of-life concerns at private military housing around the county, including Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton.Feinstein and Harris joined Virginia senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine to introduce the bill. The senators began drafting the legislation after a November 2018 Reuters report detailing substandard and even dangerous living conditions at Lincoln Military Housing's privately owned complexes, including mold spores, water leaks and infestations of rodents and insects.The report also detailed multiple instances of Lincoln's slow and lack of a response to tenants complaining about living conditions. Lincoln Military Housing runs most of Camp Pendleton's 7,900 housing units.``Service members shouldn't have to worry about the health and safety of their families while protecting our country,'' Feinstein said.``Unfortunately, many living in private military housing are dealing with hazardous conditions with little or no recourse."In addition to Lincoln Military Housing's large presence in the military housing market, military members and their families living on a military base like Camp Pendleton lack the same tenant rights as civilians living on private land. Reuters found that tenant rights are generally set by contracts between the military and private housing companies or landlords.Because of this, military base residents can't press local governments to enforce health codes or withhold rent payments until repairs are made.The senators' bill would enable base commanders to withhold housing payments until officials with a housing company inspect a safety or health hazard. Housing companies would also be required to pay to relocate tenants if a hazard requires them to leave.In addition to consequences for private housing companies, the U.S. Department of Defense would be required to launch an online work order system, allowing tenants the ability to view the progress of their work order requests.``I was extraordinarily troubled by reports last year of inadequate housing conditions at Camp Pendleton and visited with families living there in order to learn more about their housing needs,'' Harris said. ``This legislation is an important step forward ensuring that we're doing everything we can to provide quality housing for our service members and their families across the country.'' 2491

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A comprehensive outreach strategy to expand testing access for Latino residents and other communities hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic was announced Friday by local leaders.The new program will kick off on Monday, with a new testing site at the Mexican Consulate in downtown San Diego at 1549 India St. Starting at 8 a.m., walk-up appointments will be available until 3:30 p.m., according to the announcement from San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, Carlos Gonzalez Gutierrez, Consul General of Mexico in San Diego and other local leaders."We are prioritizing our response to health inequities in the Latino community by prioritizing efforts to help address accessibility barriers that are contributing to Latinos being disproportionately impacted by this pandemic," Fletcher said. "Whether you live in the south, north or east of our county, you should have access to testing and resources to prevent and treat the spread of COVID-19."The consulate will be the first of several locations in a 14-day rotation. Two other confirmed sites include San Luis Rey Church in Oceanside and St. Anthony of Padua in National City. Dates, times and additional locations will be announced as soon as they are finalized.According to the group, by working with partners like the consulate, Catholic Diocese of San Diego, the Chicano Federation and others, this testing initiative will enhance San Diego County's regional effort to expand coronavirus testing and outreach in the Latino community."The consulate is proud to be part of the efforts to encourage testing and diagnosis among the Latino community, a community that, unfortunately, has been disproportionately hit by COVID-19," said Gonzalez Gutierrez.
