OCEANSIDE (KGTV) - Three women were injured Sunday evening in a shooting at an Oceanside shopping center, according to Oceanside Police.Police said three Hispanic women were in front of a clothing store in the 3700 block of Mission Boulevard, when three black men suddenly came up to them, shortly after 5 pm. Two of the three suspects shot at the three young women. All the victims suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and went to the hospital. Waitress Angelica Camiro was on her break, treating her nephews to a cup of ice-cream from the shop next door. On their way back, she saw the commotion. "The only thing was, 'Save the kids!' because I don't know what was happening," Camiro said. She immediately ran back into the restaurant and told all the customers to get to the back of the store. Now more than ever, the impact of not having enough minority schoolteachers is part of the conversation, with efforts focused on undoing systemic disparities.“For so long, I think people have been uncomfortable having discussions about race and how that influences not only students but teachers in a school setting, where you are learning about what society is supposed to look like,” said Eric Duncan, Senior Data and Policy Analyst at The Education Trust.Duncan is part of The Education Trust’s Education Diversity Team, a group that advocates for higher achievement of all students, particularly those of color or living in poverty.Research in Sage Journals found minority students have more favorable perceptions of minority teachers, which can translate to better academic outcomes. Yet, teachers of color make up just 20% of the workforce. Close to 40% of all schools don't have a single teacher of color.Meanwhile, racial and ethnic minority students now make up a majority of the public-school population.Schools have made gains recently hiring more teachers of color, but retention is an issue because they leave the workforce at a higher rate than white teachers. The Education Trust found that's in part due to working conditions.Minority teachers often take on additional roles outside of teaching that they are not paid or even recognized for.School culture is another significant factor.“Discipline policies that educators of color are frankly tired of seeing and our country is tired of seeing the way that students are over disciplined, are misunderstood, particularly students of color, are driven out of school, are suspended for minor misconducts,” said Duncan.The Education Trust has recommendations on how schools can retain teachers of color, starting with collecting data by race and ethnicity on recruitment, hiring and retention. (KGTV) — There are more complaints against an Oceanside investment company and the man in charge of that business.Team 10 has spoken to several investors who said they gave thousands of dollars to the Pacific Teak Reforestation Project, managed and developed by Pacific Management Group. Ron Fleming is listed as the founder and chairman of the board on the company’s website.The website states the Pacific Teak reforestation project “provides individuals, businesses, and institutions around the world the opportunity to build their financial future, while saving one of the earth’s most precious and scarce natural habitats: the tropical rainforest.”RELATED: Investors say they lost thousands with Oceanside investment companyAccording to the company’s sales plan, investors paid for teak trees in Costa Rica, which would eventually be harvested and sold for timber.A certified letter shown to Team 10 listed 18 investors that demanded Fleming return their money for a project they said did not deliver. That letter was delivered to Fleming’s Oceanside home this summer.“No one’s ever seen a dime,” said investor Michael Tillman, a Navy veteran who lives in Maryland."He befriended you first," added Greg Robertson, who currently lives in Rome, Italy. “[Fleming] got your confidence, your trust. Everything. Then he betrayed you.”Mark Baker, who lives in Arizona, said he grew up with Fleming. He said he invested more than 0,000 with Pacific Teak. The state issued a desist and refrain order in 2016 against Fleming and his company. It also found Pacific Management Group did not have a proper permit to operate and said the company “never gave investors the profits promised” listed in their agreements.A spokesperson with the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation could not comment on any investigation related to Pacific Teak. However, he said desist and refrain orders are like probation and, “any discovery of further violation would result in an additional response.” That response could include fines, penalties, or criminal referrals.The spokesperson added that they strongly encourage anyone with concerns about Pacific Teak to file a complaint with their department.Fleming would not agree to an on-camera interview with Team 10. His attorney said Fleming did not do anything unethical in relationship to Pacific Management Group. In an email, attorney Dominic Amorosa added: “I am not sure whether you can find any investor in the United States who believes that an investment must necessarily be successful notwithstanding any foreseeable or unforeseeable events.” 3987

One person has been confirmed dead after a huge fire engulfed and destroyed an apartment building in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo early Tuesday, according to state-run news agency Agencia Brasil.The dramatic fire broke out on the fifth floor of the 26-story building, which collapsed in a fireball an hour and a half later, according to the Brazilian Civil Defense.Seven other buildings were evacuated in the surrounding area. OCOTILLO WELLS, Calif. (KGTV) - Four earthquakes shook the Ocotillo Wells area on Saturday evening. They struck between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. about 14.3 miles east-southeast of Ocotillo Wells in San Diego County.The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 3.5-magnitude quake struck the region at 5:34 p.m. A 3.4-magnitude quake struck only a few minutes prior.Two aftershocks followed suit. A 3.1-magnitude quake shook the area at 5:37 p.m. and the last earthquake reported struck around 5:48 p.m with a 3.3-magnitude. 523
