According to the report, fires originating from Christmas trees cause six deaths per year, on average. One-in-four fires from Christmas trees start from heat source such as a candle. Although buying an artificial tree likely decreases the risk of a fire, for every three fires sparked by a real Christmas tree, one is caused by an artificial tree. The National Fire Protection Association released Christmas tree fire prevention tips:· Choose a tree with fresh, green needles that do not fall off when touched.· Before placing the tree in the stand, cut 2” from the base of the trunk. · Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. · Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit. · Add water to the tree stand. Be sure to add water daily. · Use lights that have the label of a recognized testing laboratory. At Dayton Consolidated School in Maine, one student has inspired a big change to the curriculum. Morey Belanger, a 6-year-old kindergartener, is the school's first deaf student. To make her feel welcome, the school embraced the opportunity to teach all the students some sign language.Sign language posters now line the walls of hallways, and students have learned how to sign more than 20 words including colors, letters and words related to school."Morey -- without even knowing it -- has taught us so much," said school Principal Kimberly Sampietro. "She has brought a culture to our building that we didn't have before."The school installed a hearing assistive system and implemented extra teacher training to incorporate sign language into every classroom, including core subjects, music and computer class. Sampietro said many teachers also began using their free time to watch sign language videos and read books on special education.The kindergarten class is also getting some help from Morey."Morey helped all of them to learn the alphabet," Sampietro said. "The kids have just really embraced her. They look up to her, they want her around, and they want to partner with her."Morey's mom, Shannon Belanger, said her family has been blown away by how supportive the school has been."I absolutely feel like it makes her feel welcomed," Belanger said. California Governor Gavin Newsom did away Wednesday with a law that made it a crime to refuse to help a police officer.The law dates back nearly 150 years to California's Wild West days, when cowboys and outlaws roamed the state.The California Posse Comitatus Act of 1872 made it a misdemeanor for "an able-bodied person 18 years of age or older" to refuse a request for assistance from a police officer "in making an arrest, retaking into custody a person who has escaped from arrest or imprisonment, or preventing a breach of the peace or the commission of any criminal offense."It was widely used by authorities to legally form posses to hunt outlaws.State Senate Bill 192, which repeals the law, was first introduced on January 30, and it was sponsored by Senator Bob Hertzberg. Hertzberg originally tasked his interns with identifying outdated laws when they discovered it."Thank you to my interns for finding a law that belongs in the history books, not the law books," Senator Hertzberg said.Cory M.
