KANSAS CITY, Mo. – After more than a century embedded beneath the paint, researchers discovered a grasshopper beneath the brushstrokes in a Vincent Van Gogh painting at the Nelson Atkins Art Museum.Paintings Conservator Mary Schafer discovered the tiny grasshopper in the lower foreground of the landscape while working under a microscope. According to a news release from the Nelson, Schafer and other researchers hoped the grasshopper could be used to determine a more specific date on the painting.“It is not unusual to find insects or plant material in a painting that was completed outdoors,” Schafer said. “But in this case, we were curious if the grasshopper could be used to identify the particular season in which this work was painted.”Unfortunately, entomologists were unable to date the painting, but could determine the grasshopper had died before landing on Van Gogh’s canvas.Additional research on Van Gogh’s “Olive Trees” is underway. (AP) — Mississippi's largest religious group says state lawmakers have a moral obligation to remove the Confederate battle emblem from the state flag because many people are "hurt and shamed" by the symbol. The Mississippi Baptist Convention has more than 500,000 members in a state of 3 million people. The convention said Tuesday that many see the flag as "a relic of racism and a symbol of hatred."It joins the other influential groups, including the governing body for college athletics, that are calling for Mississippi to change its flag. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A boater who had been missing since Friday was rescued about 86 miles off the coast of Florida on Sunday.The U.S. Coast Guard says 62-year-old Stuart Bee was found alive on the bow of his 32-foot Sea Ray, which had capsized.Bee departed Cape Marina in Port Canaveral on Friday and didn’t return, according to the Coast Guard.Watchstanders in Jacksonville learned of the disappearance Saturday morning and were told Bee wouldn’t typically stay out on his boat overnight.An aircrew was dispatched the area and other boaters were advised to be on the lookout for Bee’s vessel.Luckily, the Coast Guard says Bee was spotted clinging to his boat at about 11 a.m. Sunday and was then transported to shore."Saving lives at sea is our highest calling. KILLEEN, TX — A suspect in a Fort Hood Criminal Investigation Division (CID) case died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound just as officers attempted to make contact with him early Wednesday morning.The Army has since confirmed the incident is linked to the disappearance of Pfc. Vanessa Guillen.Officers with the Killeen Police Department with the assistance of U.S. Marshals located the suspect at around 1:30 a.m. local time.Officers, along with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals, located the suspect in the 4700 block of East Rancier Avenue — about 10 miles from Fort Hood. The Killeen Police Department says as officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, he pulled out a gun and shot it towards himself. The suspect later died.The incident came hours after Army CID agents announced they had found human remains while searching for Pfc. Vanessa Guillen, a soldier who went missing from the base on April 22.
