LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore asked the National Guard to support local law enforcement officers in keeping looters and rioters from destroying properties amid demonstrations against police brutality and racism. The City of La Mesa posted a message saying a portion of the guard would respond to the city Wednesday night. The new rules and assistance of the National Guard were requested in La Mesa after what started out as peaceful demonstrations turned violent Saturday night when several banks and vehicles were set on fire, and numerous businesses were ransacked. In a post on Twitter late Wednesday, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office announced that 200 members of the California Army National Guard are in the county following a request from Gore. "They will work alongside law enforcement providing security to critical infrastructures (public buildings, courthouses, power grids, etc.) during the protests to prevent looting & arson," the sheriff's office said. "This mutual aide will help keep our communities safe while protecting everyone's right to protest."One hundred National Guard members were deployed to La Mesa, with the other 100 assigned to other parts of the county. The news comes as cities throughout the county enforce a days-long curfew. Wednesday night, the City of La Mesa is under a curfew from 7 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. According to the city, the rule will be in effect through June 8. LEXINGTON, Kent. - Students on the University of Kentucky campus will put a theory to the test by using more testing."Anyone who is quarantined would be tested on day three, day five, day seven, day 10, and day 14," said Dr. Robert DiPaola, the College of Medicine dean. The goal is to see if the 14-days of quarantine are a little excessive."Whether that initial testing period, so, for example, day three, or day five, or day shirk, was predictive of them being OK on day 14," DiPaola added. If enough tests come back negative in under 14 days, researchers feel as if they'd have their answers, and students might be able to get back outside much sooner."I think it's awesome," said freshman Blake Burden. "To shorten quarantine and get back to class and start socializing and seeing people again would be great."There's an added medical benefit to this program too."Mental health and well-being. It's hard for these students or anyone to quarantine for 14 days," DiPaola said. And because of that challenge, compliance with the 14 days becomes an issue, and slippage there can lead to more cases elsewhere."It'll help us have a better handle on how to work towards decreasing transmission," DiPaola said. This story was first reported by Michael Berk at WLEX in Lexington, Kentucky. 1289

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — The La Mesa community has continued to show its strength and resilience. But as we head into the weekend, the city's 7 p.m. curfew continues and some fear there could be more violent riots.Colorful murals now cover La Mesa businesses, destroyed by rioters and looters last weekend. For Kenny Siler, Friday is a big win. "It means the world to be able to come in here," Siler said.He drove his legally blind friends to the Vons grocery store on the first day it reopened. "If there's a good sale, [I get] a whole bunch of Gatorade, and if there's a good chunk of meat I can smoke," he laughed. He's one of the hundreds of La Mesans supporting local businesses as soon as they can. Some shop, some clean, some donate.Next to Vons, California Coast Credit Union still has not reopened. "Both ATM's and inside, everything has been just butchered," the credit union's Sr. VP of Communications, Rene McKee said. They were victims of the riots, but they are also stepping up to help. Friday, the credit union donated ,000 to the La Mesa Business Disaster Recovery Fund. The online Gofundme account continues to grow every hour, far past the original goal of ,000."It's helping to bolster the spirits of the residents here in La Mesa and these small businesses," McKee said. While glimmers of hope begin to flicker, La Mesans still face the reality that what happened last weekend, could happen again. One hundred national guard troops continue to provide added security and prevent property damage, with 100 more on standby in case the situation worsens. For Siler, who is a proud military veteran, he hopes this weekend will bring peace and order. "I support my constitution," Siler said. "Protest. But don't do what you've done," he pointed at the boarded-up walls. The money donated to the La Mesa Business Disaster Recovery Fund will be collected on June 25, 2020. Any La Mesa businesses affected by the riots can contact the East County Chamber of Commerce to apply for support funds. 2019

Life coach Tony Robbins apologized Sunday for his comments about the #MeToo movement after suggesting during a March event that some women use it to gain significance by playing the victim.Robbins argued with a woman name Nanine McCool during a March 15 Unleash the Power Within event about how the #MeToo movement is being used. McCool posted the exchange on her personal YouTube account on March 25. Robbins immediately faced backlash for what he said."My comments failed to reflect the respect I have for everything Tarana Burke and the #MeToo movement has achieved," Robbins said in a statement, referencing the woman credited with starting the movement in 2006. "I apologize for suggesting anything other than my profound admiration for the #MeToo movement."The video shows Robbins towering over McCool, and at one point using his fist to push her to metaphorically show how some women are using the movement."If you use the #MeToo movement to try to get significance and certainty by attacking and destroying someone else, you haven't grown an ounce. All you've done is basically use a drug called significance to make yourself feel good," Robbins said during the event.McCool acknowledged during the exchange there are people using the #MeToo Movement for their own personal gain, but also said that there are people who are trying to make it safe for other women."You're a leader and an influential man and you are doing a disservice, in my opinion, to the #MeToo movement," McCool said to Robbins.Robbins said during the event that he can't be doing a disservice because the women in the room will continue to do what they believe."It's not just about what women believe, it's about what people believe," McCool said."I'm not gonna be inauthentic and say I'm sorry about something I'm not sorry about," Robbins said at the end of the exchange. After the exchange was posted, it was picked up by the entertainment news outlet NowThis Entertainment where it went viral when it was posted Friday.Tarana Burke, who started the #MeToo movement, said on Twitter Saturday that Robbins' representatives reached out to her."They wanted to 'give me context' apparently," she said in the tweets. "I don't need any. I have eyes."Burke said she watched the entire exchange and said Robbins' "misogyny runs deep."McCool posted another video on Saturday, after the NowThis video went viral, saying she didn't plan on having that exchange with Robbins, but is "grateful and honored to be the catalyst for this discussion.""If we're all agreeing with each other, if we shut down all the people who don't agree with us then we have no discussion and we get nowhere," she said, adding that she doesn't believe in bashing Robbins."I hope what we can actually do is create a discussion with Tony Robbins instead of at Tony Robbins," she said.Robbins acknowledged in his apology Sunday that he has much to learn."I am committed to being part of the solution," he said.  2968
