EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - The City of El Cajon is working to revitalize its main street, with the Magnolia Theater at the centerpiece of the effort.The theater used to be the El Cajon Performing Arts Center. In 2009, during the latest recession, the city shut it down to save money.Over the last few years, the city spent more than million to renovate the building and turn it into "The Magnolia."The building got new air conditioning and heating, new carpet, new seating and more modern amenities."We've rebranded it," says City Manager Graham Mitchell. "We have a new name, a new management company and a new way of doing things. Live Nation will provide up to 70 acts per year. The city will pay them a flat fee and then keep 100 percent of the proceeds from the shows.The venue reopened in October of 2019, and Mitchell says he's already seeing the impact it's having on the downtown area."My office is right across the plaza from the Magnolia, and pre-show, watching people spill into El Cajon, people that have not ever been here or haven't been here for a while, you can see the enthusiasm that this venue is building," he says.Business owners in the area agree.RELATED: Construction problems delay renovation of East County concert venueLupe Marrujo's family owns two restaurants on Main Street, the Downtown Cafe and Por Favor. She says business picks up on the nights when The Magnolia has a show."Before the show and after the show," she says. "They come to either the bar or the restaurant."Mitchell says the city expects an extra 100,000 people to visit downtown each year because of the events. They hope those people will come back, even when there isn't a show."There's a lot of revival, a lot of renewal, and this project exemplifies the things that are happening in the city," says Mitchell. (KGTV) - The man charged with the brutal beating of an El Cajon Police officer inside a KFC appeared at a preliminary hearing in court Wednesday.Officer Jose Sioson was preparing to question Daniel Cook about stealing sodas from a Dollar Tree store when Cook attacked him at the restaurant on Fletcher Parkway, police said.MTS bus driver Iesha Booker witnessed the attack and grabbed the officer’s own radio to call for help when he was knocked unconscious.“I just grabbed his walkie talkie. I didn't know how to work it, I just grabbed it and just kept screaming in there they have an officer down, they have an officer down,” Booker said.Officer Sioson was taken to the hospital and released after several surgeries. "I was just doing what I thought that anyone would do for us or for me."Cook, who has previous convictions for assault and resisting arrest, is being held on half a million dollars bail. EL CENTRO, Calif. (KGTV) -- The four Marines who died in a Marine Corps helicopter crash during a training mission in El Centro Tuesday have been identified.Military officials say Capt. Samuel A. Schultz, 28, of Huntington Valley, Pennsylvania; First Lt. Samuel D. Phillips, 27, of Pinehurst, North Carolina; Gunnery Sgt. Derik Holley, 33, of Dayton, Ohio; and Lance Cpl. Taylor J. (KGTV) -- El Cajon Police searched an illegal marijuana dispensary that resulted in six people being detained Thursday morning.Police served the search warrant after receiving complaints about the illegal business, which is located near homes on the 400 block of West Douglas Avenue.The City of El Cajon doesn’t allow marijuana dispensaries within city limits.When police arrived, they found marijuana, marijuana edibles, drinks and cash.Police said no arrests have been made in the case, but the investigation is ongoing. 547
