FONTANA, Calif. -- Metal scrappers aren’t making as much money as what they used to. “A long time ago we got maybe 14 or 15 bucks,” Harry Sawyer said. “But now we get maybe .” Sawyer has been scrapping metal for more than a decade and says he’s never seen prices this low. “I don’t feel good about it,” he said. “I don’t feel good about it.” Workers at American Metal Recycling in Southern California say the prices started dropping soon after international tariffs hit. “We are talking anywhere between 0 to what it is now a ton,” said metal buyer Erick Valdez. “So, it’s half price. It’s pretty bad.” Valdez says all metals – including steel, aluminum and copper – were all hit hard. “There’s really nothing that made it through pretty good through these tariff wars,” he said. Everything was messed with.” With less money to make, Valdez is seeing less people recycling metal. “Before we’d recognize what their name was – first and last name,” he said. “Now we’re like, ‘what’s your name again?’” So why should you care if metal scrappers are making less money? Well, international economists say when prices are raised by tariffs – that increase in cost is passed to consumers – and ultimately hurts other parts of the economy. “There have been some analysts that say for every steel job you save, you loss 16 in the rest of the economy,” said Walter Hutchins, J.D. M.A., a professor of global business at the University of Redlands. “If the regular Joe is union worker for US Steel, he may or she may have gotten some kind temporary benefit from the tariffs,” he said. “But when that same worker goes to buy a F-150 pickup or his pension fund has shares of Ford Motor Company stock in it, that average Joe could be quite harmed.” While the sticker shock might be driving some scrappers away, other metal industries say they are flourishing. “You can be a high school dropout and you can still make 0,000 in my industry,” said Randy McClure, who owns and operates the Welding Skills Test and Training Center in Rancho Cucamonga. Though he’s seeing the price change in metals, McClure is also seeing the demand change for work. “I don’t know if it’s more work because the tariffs came in but there is more work than there are people to do the work,” he said. “Not having enough workers is a bigger problem than the tariffs. Boeing's bestselling passenger jet is facing increased scrutiny after being involved in two deadly crashes in less than five months, a situation that threatens to tarnish the US plane maker's reputation for safety.Chinese aviation authorities on Monday told airlines in the country to ground all their Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft, citing the need for "strict control of safety risks." Some individual airlines are taking similar action elsewhere. And Boeing has postponed the debut of its new 777X jetliner, which was scheduled for this week, as it deals with the fallout from Sunday's disaster in Ethiopia.The flurry of negative headlines unsettled investors. Boeing shares dropped nearly 9% in premarket trading early Monday in New York.All 157 people on board a 737 MAX 8 operated by Ethiopian Airlines were killed when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff on Sunday morning. In late October, a 737 MAX 8 flown by Lion Air went down off the coast of Indonesia, killing 189 people.Both the Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air planes were brand-new aircraft. And both crashed minutes into flight.Ethiopian Airlines said Monday that it was grounding its fleet of 737 MAX planes as an "extra safety precaution," and Cayman Airways, the main carrier of the Cayman Islands, said it would do the same until "more information is received."The circumstances of the two crashes remain under investigation, and Boeing has presented no evidence to suggest the two disasters are linked. Gehm and Sons is an Akron-based company with a cool past, hoping its very cold product will help provide a brighter future for Ohioans growing increasingly weary from the COVID-19 pandemic."We went from a horse-and-buggy shop in the early 1900s to a carbonic gas distribution company. In the mid-'40s, we went to dry ice," said co-owner, Harry Gehm.The company makes about six million pounds of dry ice each year, utilizing carbon dioxide and a block press to make 55-pound cubes. A pellet press slices the blocks into smaller chunks, which are then stored in boxes that can hold about 1,200 pounds of dry ice pellets.Demand for dry ice is hot after Pfizer announced its vaccine would need long-term storage at minus 94 degrees. Long-term storage for Moderna's vaccine would be minus four degrees. The temperature of the dry ice manufactured at Gehm and Sons is minus 109 degrees. The company has recently received about 15 calls from hospitals, stores like Giant Eagle, and the Ohio Department of Health ready to place large orders of dry ice in order to effectively store vaccine vials."When these hospitals get it (the vaccine), they're going to need dry ice within a matter of days, so they have to be set up way ahead of time so they are ready to receive a shipment," he said.Gehm expects the rush on dry ice will boost sales by 10 to 15%.The business was informed that ODH was preparing to order 15,000 pounds of dry ice per week."They're asking for between 25 to 50 pounds per container. I don't know how many vials are in each container, but that's what they're requesting," Gehm said.Gehm believes his company is the only Ohio manufacturer of dry ice, and for that reason, he feels the order calls will keep rolling in."I'm imagining it's going to last for a few months especially when they said these vaccines are a double dose, so that means it's going to take twice the time," he said.Rachel Feeley, a spokesperson for the Ohio Department of Health, expects the orders will begin around December 1, and the dry ice will be used for the Pfizer vaccine when repackaging and transporting to providers throughout Ohio.Feeley said ODH is waiting for information from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to determine when the vaccine will be available for distribution.The weekly cost for the dry ice will be ,162 per week and will be funded with CARES funding, Feely explained.Gehm said he's glad his company with a rich history will play a role in protecting the critical vaccine for residents."It's just neat.
