SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Animal Planet TV series focusing on the San Diego Zoo and the zoo's Safari Park will premiere Saturday, offering audiences a behind-the-scenes view of the zoo's daily activities."The Zoo: San Diego" will debut with two one-hour episodes titled "Welcome to Our World" and "New Day for an Old Tortoise." The series will follow animal care staff members, veterinarians, scientists and researchers at the zoo, Safari Park and the zoo's Institute for Conservation Research.The first episode will feature a baby klipspringer's birth and first days at the zoo, research into why a species of pit viper is having spinal issues and conservation work on the California condor population. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man who sexually assaulted three women, some of whom were unconscious during the acts, was sentenced Friday to six years in state prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for life.Juan Carlos Cordero, 37, pleaded guilty in September to three felony sexual assault counts stemming from allegations that he assaulted women he met on dating sites or in person between 2015 and 2019.Cordero pleaded guilty to penetration of an unconscious victim by a foreign object, forcible sodomy and sodomy of an unconscious victim, with each count corresponding to women identified only as Jane Does 1 through 3.RELATED: San Diego women face their accused rapist at preliminary hearingSome of the victims alleged they may have been drugged by the defendant and testified during a preliminary hearing last year that while with Cordero, they blacked out and woke up in his bed, with little to no recollection of the previous night.Many testified that they discovered they'd suffered injuries that led them to believe they had been sexually assaulted.Some women testified they felt drugged the following morning but had no memory of how that may have occurred, while others testified that Cordero forced alcohol or drugs on them.RELATED: Sex assault suspect may have more victims, San Diego Police sayIn addition to the three victims Cordero pleaded guilty to assaulting, testimony also came from several other women alleging he committed similar acts on them, as state law allows testimony from alleged victims of defendants charged with sexual offenses in order to establish a pattern of behavior.Cordero was arrested in March 2019.Following his arrest and the District Attorney's Office filing of felony charges, San Diego police put a call out for any potential victims, stating that Cordero had been known to identify himself as "J.C." to young women in the area. 1895

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - After hours of public input and deliberation, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors today unanimously approved a .5 billion operating budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year.Previously .4 billion, the revised budget reflects an additional .2 million in recent funding requests, including million for rental assistance, millions of dollars in road projects and an office dedicated to racial equality.Tuesday's vote, held via teleconference, follows two public hearings earlier in August, when board members heard funding requests from residents.Normally held in late June, the budget approval process was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.Supervisors thanked Chief Administrative Officer Helen-Robbins Meyer and her staff for crafting a budget during an especially challenging time.``Putting together a budget is a big job,'' said board Chairman Greg Cox.According to a summary provided by Robbins-Meyer's office, the county is spending .5 billion on health & human services, billion for public safety, 6 million on finance and general government, 2 million on land use and environment, 9 million on various items and 5 million on capital improvements.``I think we can be proud that we have a good, solid and well-balanced budget,'' Supervisor Dianne Jacob said.Supervisor Jim Desmond credited staff members for ``for fighting to do the right thing. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An alleged drunken driver was going 121 mph when he caused a fiery freeway pileup that killed two men and seriously injured a woman on Interstate 15 last year, a prosecutor told jurors Tuesday, but a defense attorney claimed an off-duty San Diego police sergeant is actually to blame for the deaths.Jeffrey Brian Levi, 39, is charged with murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, hit-and-run and drunken driving, for the Jan. 2, 2018, deaths of 33-year-old Jesus David Dominguez and 19-year-old Isaac Felix, who were burned to death inside a Toyota Corolla that was struck at about 11:45 that night in the fast lane of northbound Interstate 15 near Miramar Road.Giovanna Dominguez -- Jesus Dominguez's sister and Felix's girlfriend - - was also a passenger in the Corolla. She survived but sustained broken bones and burns across her body.RELATED: Suspected drunk driver facing murder charge in fiery crash that killed twoDeputy District Attorney Andrew Aguilar told jurors in his opening statement of Levi's trial that the defendant rear-ended the Corolla, then walked away from the crash scene unscathed.The Corolla was left disabled in the fast lane with no lights on, its three occupants "sitting ducks" for an ensuing crash, Aguilar said.A short time later, a Ford Explorer driven by off-duty San Diego police Sgt. Raymond Rowe then struck the Corolla, which burst into flames and left Dominguez and Felix trapped inside the burning wreckage, while bystanders pulled Giovanna Dominguez out.The Ford Explorer overturned, coming to rest upside down, and Rowe was treated for minor to moderately serious injuries.Aguilar alleged that about three hours after the crash, Levi had a blood-alcohol content of 0.16%, which is twice the legal limit.Levi, who was charged with murder due to a 2007 misdemeanor DUI conviction, faces 40 years to life in prison if convicted.Defense attorney Amanda Waddle alleged that Rowe was "an unreasonable and negligent driver" who should be held liable for the deadly wreck. According to Waddle, Rowe was speeding, failed to wear his prescription glasses and was looking in his rearview mirror at the time of impact.Aguilar noted that Rowe often used his rearview mirror to spot anyone who might be trailing him from the police station to his home, a risk that Rowe potentially faced as a member of the department's gang unit.In addition to not paying attention, Waddle said that Rowe failed to use evasive maneuvers that were part of his police training."This was the direct result of that secondary, very violent crash where Sgt. Rowe was not paying attention to the roadway in front of him," Waddle said.The defense conceded that Levi was driving too fast in connection with the initial crash, but said "thankfully" there were no significant injuries as a result.Giovanna Dominguez -- who was expected to testify Wednesday -- did indicate during a preliminary hearing earlier this year that no one was injured as a result of the initial crash. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man was sentenced Friday to more than six years in prison for operating a million Ponzi scheme that caused investors to lose more than million.In addition to the 75-month sentence, Jonny Ngo, former president and CEO of NL Technology, LLC, was ordered to pay nearly million in restitution for bilking investors out of money he alleged would be used to fund wholesale purchase orders of smartphone screens and other electronic goods.Prosecutors said the funds were actually spent on personal expenses, such as "a home, luxury cars and gambling."Ngo, 34, told investors that NL Technology was supplying smartphone screens to several buyers, including two that each ordered about million worth of NL Technology products, and prepared false financial and bank statements to back up his claims, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Ngo pleaded guilty to a mail fraud charge last year."Ngo swindled and conned innocent investors out of their hard-earned money to support his lavish lifestyle," FBI Special Agent in Charge Suzanne Turner said. "The false representations about wholesale purchase orders worth millions and supporting phony business records were all lies.
