OTAY MESA (CNS) - Border Patrol agents stopped a car in Otay Mesa and arrested five people, including a man who claimed to be a national guardsman from California, for alleged human smuggling, a Customs and Border Protection officer said Saturday.Around 3:45 p.m., Border Patrol agents stopped a car near the intersection of Alta Road and Otay Mesa Boulevard, according to Customs and Border Protection Officer Ralph Desio. The area is about a mile north of the U.S.-Mexico border.Agents interviewed the five people inside the car, all men, and determined two were U.S. citizens and the other three were undocumented Mexican nationals, Desio said.The driver of the car claimed to be a California National Guardsman in the process of separating from the service, according to Desio. California National Guard spokesman Lt. Col Jonathan Shirmo, however, told City News Service that the man was not a national guardsman, and was believed to be a U.S. Army reservist.The Army could not be immediately reached for comment.The five were all arrested, and the two citizens could face charges of human smuggling, Desio said.The three undocumented people were being held as witnesses in the case and will later face deportation proceedings, according to Desio. 1264

Researchers have now quantified how much opioids are shortening US life spans.The researchers noted that the number of opioid overdose deaths are probably underestimated because of gaps in how death certificates are completed.From 2000 to 2015, death rates due to heart disease, diabetes and other key causes declined, adding 2.25 years to US life expectancy. But increases in deaths from Alzheimer's disease, suicide and other causes offset some of those gains. On average, Americans can now expect to live 78.8 years, according to data from 2015, the most recent data available. That's a statistically significant drop of 0.1 year, about a month, from the previous year.Women can still expect to live longer than men -- 81.2 years vs. 76.3 years -- but both of those estimates were lower in 2015 than they were in 2014.Life expectancy at age 65 remained the same in 2015. (KGTV) -- A dramatic arrest of a man following a police pursuit that started in San Juan Capistrano and ended in Oceanside.The California Highway Patrol said it all started around 11 p.m. Sunday night when officers attempted to pull over a silver car that was weaving and traveling with no lights on Interstate 5. The driver never stopped, leading officers on a pursuit for about 20 minutes.When the chase entered San Diego County, CHP officers used a spike strip to slow down the car near Camp Pendleton, with the Carlsbad Police Department's help.The car eventually pulled into the center divider at Oceanside Blvd., but the driver refused to come out. Officers used munitions to break the back window and had a K-9 drag the man out.The driver was resisting arrest and had to be wrestled onto a gurney and taken to the hospital.No officers were injured. Older women with excess body fat, even if they have what's considered a normal body-mass index, could be at greater risk for breast cancer, according to a study published Thursday in the medical journal JAMA Oncology."We do find that excess body fat in those who are post-menopausal with a normal body mass index is associated with about a doubling in the risk of estrogen-dependent breast cancer," said Dr. Andrew Dannenberg, one of the study's authors and director of cancer prevention at the Sandra and Edward Meyer Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine.The American Cancer Society says estrogen-dependent cancers, called ER-positive breast cancer in the study, occur when the receptor proteins in or on cells attach to the hormone estrogen and rely on it to grow.The researchers studied 3,460 American women between the ages of 50 and 79 who had gone through menopause. The women were part of the Women's Health Initiative and had their body composition measured at the beginning of that program, Dannenberg said.
