SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There are jobs for college students. And then there's Woodstock's Pizza. Woodstock's is not an ordinary college job. "We look at all of our extended employees as part of the Woodstock's family," says Jeff Ambrose, CEO of Woodstock's Pizza. If Woodstock's is a family, then Jeff Ambrose is the Godfather. Ambrose began his career with Woodstock's right out of college back in the early 1980s. He's grown up with the restaurant since his college days at Oregon State doing everything from delivery to management. It was then Jeff learned about treating employees like family from original owner Chuck Woodstock decades ago in Corvallis, Oregon. "Chuck had this vision of having a Woodstock's Pizza in every college town west of the Mississippi," adds Ambrose. Not only that, Jeff was given the opportunity to own 25% of the restaurant. That opportunity for employees to own part of the franchise continues to this day with Jeff. "Because I think it's the right thing to do," Ambrose answers when asked why. In the mid-1980s Chuck Woodstock died in a plane crash. It was Jeff who took over the chain in California including two restaurants here in San Diego. And to this day, his managers have opportunities to buy stock in Woodstock's."That was a big part for me of saying we want to give back," says Ambrose. Employees are paid above minimum wage; those who work more than 30 hours a week are offered medical and dental benefits. Woodstock's was doing this long before the Affordable Care Act became law. "My thought is that we want to keep and retain the best people we can keep and retain," says Ambrose confidently. Yesenia Rios is a great example. "I personally need a job that can be flexible with me," says Rios. Yesenia is an engineering student at San Diego State. She started at Woodstock's a couple of years ago making pizzas. Now she's in administration working in the company's I.T. Department. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of people spent their final day of the holiday weekend at San Diego beaches, just as the Beach Hazards Warning expired. Mother of two, Shannon Crais spent the day at Ocean Beach Sunday. "We live a couple of blocks away, so we come down here a couple of times a week."Her daughter Sam likes to play tag with the waves, as they ripple towards her older brother Alex. The Ocean Beach residents say they know the potential dangers of their favorite play area. "I talk to my son about it because he is a little bit bigger," Craig said. "But my daughter, she stays close. We talk about the ocean being dangerous."Sunday afternoon, the National Weather Service dropped the Beach Hazards Warning for all of San Diego County. But all weekend, beachgoers faced strong rip currents and high breaking waves. This was a point of concern for some, but great news for surfers like Jesus Rodriguez. "I think the hurricane is bringing the swell from down south and it has been awesome!" Rodriguez said. Rodriguez says the waves were much better this long holiday weekend thanks to the high surf advisory. They were so good that he had to share the waves with a lot more people than usual. That is why he was doing two-a-day sessions over the last few days. "You get a lot better waves and a lot better form on the wave, so you can start ripping them up," Rodriguez said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — There are still many unknowns surrounding SARS-CoV-2, the official name of the new coronavirus, but almost from the beginning one thing has been clear: people with underlying health conditions are more at-risk.San Diego County Health officials released new data this month showing which underlying conditions pose the greatest risk of death from COVID-19, based on the number of times a condition was listed on death certificates and other medical records.Among the 626 COVID deaths recorded in San Diego County as of Tuesday, 96 percent of the victims had at least one underlying condition. It may have to do with the prevalence of these conditions in the population and the way SARS-CoV-2 attacks the body, according to Sharp Rees-Stealy physician Dr. Abisola Olulade.Scientists are still scrambling to understand exactly how SARS-CoV-2 attacks and kills patients, but emerging research offers some theories.It starts when virus particles enter a person’s nose or mouth. The coronavirus makes it way towards the lungs first, and the immune system tries to fight it, causing inflammation along the way that can lead to pneumonia.People with hypertension and diabetes, the top two underlying conditions in San Diego County’s data, often have existing damage to their blood vessels.Based on early studies, scientists theorize the virus may be causing more damage to the vessel through inflammation and clotting, or outright attacking the blood vessels themselves.On top of that, hypertension is common: “Almost half of all adults in the United States have hypertension,” Dr. Olulade said. “45 percent.”Patients with cardiac disease, like coronary heart disease and congestive heart failure, have existing damage to their heart.Early research shows the coronavirus can cause inflammation of the heart muscle. It might also damage the heart indirectly, as the fight with the immune system in the lungs lowers oxygen levels in the blood.“If your heart isn’t pumping enough oxygen out to the blood, that amplifies the risk and the threat of dying from COVID,” Dr. Olulade said.Patients with dementia, the fourth most common condition on the list, already have an elevated risk of dying from pneumonia, one of the calling cards of a severe COVID-19 infection. People with diabetes also have a risk of pneumonia. In fact, the risk is so high, the CDC recommends patients with diabetes get a pneumonia vaccination.For individuals with chronic kidney disease, scientists aren’t yet sure if the virus attacks the kidneys directly or the kidneys get hit with collateral damage from other body system failures.Regardless of the underlying condition, Dr. Olulade said taking steps to treat and keep it under control can greatly reduce your risk from the coronavirus.Individuals with mild or controlled asthma, for example, are not considered to be at higher risk of severe illness, she said.San Diego County’s list does not include two underlying conditions considered high risk by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: cancer and sickle cell disease.That might be because the 626 deaths are a small sample size, Dr. Olulade said. 3525

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The only child to live through the Paradise Hills murder-suicide, died Saturday, relatives told 10News. Nine-year-old Ezequiel Valdivia passed at 11:23 Saturday night at Rady Children's Hospital after his family made the difficult decision to pull the plug."He's probably been gone from us for a while," said Karl Albright, Rosario's brother-in-law. "We were just using the machines to keep his body with us. But he has been upstairs with his family, watching us."Ezequiel's father, Jose Valdivia, also shot and killed his sons, Enzi, 3, Zuriel, 5, and Zeth, 11, and their 29-year-old mother, Sabrina Rosario. Valdivia then turned the gun on himself.The muder-suicide happened on Saturday, November 16 at the family's home on Flintridge Drive in Paradise Hills.The Paradise Hills community and the Twin Hills Little League came together to host this month's "Cruise Reo Car Show" as a fundraiser to help the family."The whole community of Paradise Hills came out today, and the Twin Hills Little League. They are our family forever," Vanessa Pash said. She, like Sabrina Rosario, is a Twin Hills Little League mom. Albright said Baby Enzi was the shy one, Zuriel was playful. Ezequiel was the athlete and Zeth was a sensitive sweetheart. All of them poured their love for baseball into the Twin Hills Little League."The little one was only three, and he wasn't old enough to play, but the coaches would let him go out there and practice, and make him feel like he was part of the team," Pash said. To honor the three players, the league decided to retire each child's jersey number. They also agreed to play in the boys' honor for all future games. Albright says he is overwhelmed with what the community continues to do for their family. "It's amazing how many people are coming together to do all of these things for complete strangers," Albright said. The family is now in the process of donating Ezequiel's organs. The boys and their mother will be buried together. "There's no pain, there's no suffering, no anguish, no anxiety. There's nothing. Pure peace," Albright said. Ezequiel survived for one week, but was taken off life support November 23 after the doctors said he was brain dead, according to Rosario’s brother-in-law. The boys lived in the home with their mother and other relatives, but not Valdivia, who was in the process of divorcing Rosario.
