A law professor and author is clearing the air around voting ahead of the big general election in the fall.Kim Waylee wrote “What You Need to Know About Voting and Why” to help people understand our nation’s election system.Waylee says one of the biggest misconceptions is that because of COVID-19, people think they can wait to register. She says there's also a lot of misinformation around voter fraud.“To suggest that there's, you know, there's somehow intrinsic, core problematic issues with fraud is just wrong,” said Waylee. “Plus, we have five states that vote almost exclusively by mail already and there, we haven't seen problems with that. We know how to do this, if there's sufficient funding.”Waylee says funding is a big hurdle for states that are strapped for cash because of the pandemic.More resources could help address issues with voter suppression in areas that have historically not had access.“And that is going to come from federal dollars being put into the system in a way that benefits all Americans,” said Waylee. “Because it's really ‘we the people,’ not we the Republicans and we the Democrats. A majority of voters in Puerto Rico approved a non-binding referendum that supports elevating the island territory to statehood status.The referendum narrowly passed by a 52-48 margin.The question was not the first time voters weighed in on Puerto Rico statehood. Most recently, 97% of voters approved statehood in 2017, but the vote was boycotted by opposition parties.Several previous referenda were not a straight up statehood vote.Given Puerto Rico’s status, the territory does not vote on US senators or representatives, although the territory elects a non-voting member who can serve on committees. Puerto Rico also does not get a vote in the presidential general election, but the territory does get a say in the Democratic and Republican primaries.While Democrats would likely welcome the opportunity to make Puerto Rico a state, the likelihood of there being enough political support for Puerto Rico to be the 51st state is still doubtful. 956

A Georgia school decided on Thursday to reverse its decision it made earlier in the week to end the practice of students participating in the Pledge of Allegiance during all-school assemblies, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Earlier in the week, Atlanta Neighborhood Charter School said that the pledge would no longer be recited in such assemblies after some parents and students expressed concerns. The school said that it wasn't outright banning the Pledge of Allegiance from being recited during school hours, but moving the pledge to the school's classrooms. “Over the past couple of years it has become increasingly obvious that more and more of our community were choosing to not stand and/or recite the pledge," principal Lara Zelski said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "There are many emotions around this and we want everyone in our school family to start their day in a positive manner. After all, that is the whole purpose of our morning meeting.” By late Thursday, backlash from the public and public officials forced the school to reverse its decision. Georgia' Department of Education requires schools to make time for the Pledge of Allegiance, but students are not required to stand or recite it. “Students are offered the opportunity to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance," county superintendent Morcease J. Beasley told the Constitution-Journal. "If they choose to participate or not is their individual and constitutional right and the reason the flag of the United States of America exists. A dispute is brewing between city officials in Denton, Texas and the parents of a 10-year-old boy with autism after body cam footage was released last week from an incident in April showing a school resource officer body slamming the boy, WFAA-TV reported.According to an account of events given to WFAA, the boy, Thomas Brown, poked other students and was ignoring his teachers when a school resource officer was called to the special needs classroom. The boy then backed into a cubby as school staff and the officer closed in. Video of the incident shows the officer picking up the boy as the boy began kicking and screaming. Moments later, the boy was brought to the ground, and placed in handcuffs. Thomas' parents said the use of force was "excessive.""I see a little boy hiding," mother Emily Brown told WFAA. "Not doing anything that's an imminent serious harm to someone else."Brown said she realized just how serious the incident was after she got home and noticed bruises on her son's body. Both the Denton school district and city of Denton both disagreed with Thomas' parents."The safety of all of our students is a top priority and we have protocols in place to ensure this," the Denton Independent School District said in a statement. "In this instance, protocol was followed, with the school resource officer making the determination, after all other efforts to deescalate the situation proved ineffective, that the student was a detriment to his own safety and that of the other students and staff."In the city's statement to WFAA, it claimed that Thomas "was posing a serious threat of injury to himself or others."According to ABC News, the Browns plan on suing the school district and city over the incident.  1791
