But according to Veterans United Home Loans, VA loans in California are surging, and they’re up 15 percent this year in San Diego.Navy veteran Robert Streets and his wife Corrie are part of that surge."There was a large cabinet that came out here, and we knocked that down," says Streets in his recently remodeled kitchen.The Streets are proud to show off their new home. "I own this, and I can do whatever I want. I don't have to ask somebody if I can put a hole in the wall or hang a picture."While Millennials are struggling to buy in San Diego, Millennial Veterans are surging in home purchases, up 61 percent according to Veterans United with an average purchase price of almost 0,000. And for the Streets, it was made possible using a VA Loan. "They got all the paperwork together, all the legal stuff sorted out, and they actually made the condo VA qualified so that we were able to use our VA loan. Which wouldn't have ever been in here if it wasn't for that," says Corrie Streets.The Streets are far from alone. "They don't have to build pristine credit,” adds “Birk. “And one of the biggest benefits is that so many veterans and service members aren't weighed down by student loan debt."And then there are vets like Wendell Stone. He and his wife Tessie rented for 30 years. That's when their daughter-in-law Aurora Perez, a realtor at Century 21, helped them understand they could qualify for a VA loan."They were able to purchase a home with my help in the Temecula area,” says Perez. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It’s one of the few drugs shown to help fight the novel coronavirus, and a large federal study on remdesivir just entered a new phase.Previous research sponsored by the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Disease showed remdesivir shortened recovery time in hospitalized COVID-19 patients on average from 15 days to 11 days.Now scientists and doctors are racing to find the perfect cocktail against COVD-19 by blending remdesivir with other drugs.California-based Gilead Sciences originally developed the drug to fight Ebola, but remdesivir was never approved. Gilead Sciences has offices in Oceanside.The drug works by interrupting the virus’ ability to replicate.“Remdesivir acts by shutting down virus production,” said Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, an infectious disease expert at University of California San Francisco. “It just forces the virus to stop making virus children.”Dr. Chin-Hong is studying remdesivir as part of the NIAID research.The problem is that stopping the virus from replicating isn’t enough for some severely ill patients. They suffer from a second problem: massive inflammation from the immune system’s war with the virus.That’s why scientists are trying a cocktail approach.“You have the virus to take care of, but you also have the body's response to the virus, which is inflammation, that you also have to take care of,” said Dr. Chin-Hong.Researchers started testing the first drug cocktail in May, using an arthritis drug called baricitinib that tames inflammation.But as the data on that part of the study gets crunched, researchers began testing the second cocktail this month, a combination of remdesivir and interferon beta.“Interferon beta is something we produce naturally to fight viruses,” said Dr. Chin-Hong. He said studies have shown people who don’t produce enough interferon beta struggle to fight off the virus.Researchers selected interferon beta after two small studies showed promising results against the coronavirus.Interferon beta can both reduce inflammation and kill viruses, so doctors are hoping it will be a potent one-two punch with remdesivir.Dr. Chin-Hong said he and other researchers started administering the new cocktail this month.Some patients will receive the cocktail, some will receive a placebo, and some will get remdesivir only. This kind of clinical trial is called an adaptive trial, which the FDA started encouraging in 2004. After each phase, the winning drug or cocktail will be tested against a new challenger.Dr. Chin-Hong said the eventual cocktail may include three or more drugs, similar to HIV medication. 2617

It's a solution for homelessness."People go into treatment, they get out, they relapse and the go back in and they get stuck in this thing we call the churn of in and out, and in and out of services."So Chris and Tammy Megison came up with a solution: Solutions for Change. The idea is to get families with children off the streets and into a program that would change their lives forever."We get them jobs right away, put them to work so they can learn the soft skills of working," Chris Megison said. "They're up at 5:30. Kids are fed and off to school. And now they're going to classes, they're going to work."Solutions for change works because of its motto, driven by accountability. It's a 1000 day program. Every client must have a job, and most work in the solutions aguaponic farm. They grow their own organic food, and what they don't eat they sell, and the proceeds go back into the program. "They're not looking to be a band-aid fix, they're looking to be a 'hand up' organization. They're not lowering the bar for people who find themselves in a pretty dark tragic place, they're trying to raise the bar and set people up for future success," San Diego County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar said.And since 1999, Solutions for Change has helped 900 families escape homelessness. People like Melissa Martinez and her children who not long ago were separated without a place to call home."It's put us all back under one roof. It's actually be a lot easier than I could have ever imagined, getting everybody to and from school, to and from work, we're really united and working as a team.
