EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- A former Uber driver who pleaded guilty to raping a female passenger and sexually assaulting as many as 14 others was sentenced in court Wednesday.A judge sentenced John David Sanchez, 53, to 80 years in prison. Sanchez pleaded guilty in August to 34 charges including rape and sodomy of an unconscious person.Sanchez was initially arrested about a month after a woman told police she was raped by Sanchez in February of 2016.RELATED: Uber driver accused of rape to be arraignedSanchez was fired by Uber. Dr. Deborah Birx, a key member of the White House’s coronavirus task force, sent a sharply-worded memo to the administration over her concerns about the rise in coronavirus cases, the New York Times and Washington Post reported on Monday.The memo comes as confirmed coronavirus cases are at record levels in the US. Cases in recent weeks have risen sharply, and a rise in hospitalizations have corresponded in recent days. Johns Hopkins University data shows cases are especially high through the middle of the US.In the memo obtained by the Washington Post and New York Times, Birx said that “aggressive action” is needed. While many states implemented shutdowns in the spring as cases surged, especially in the northeast, Birx was not calling for economic shutdowns in her memo.“This is not about lockdowns — It hasn’t been about lockdowns since March or April. It’s about an aggressive balanced approach that is not being implemented,” Birx said, according to the reports.The New York Times reported that Birx also warned against large political rallies, which President Donald Trump has been holding in recent weeks as the presidential campaign comes to a conclusion on Tuesday.Late last week, Stanford researchers said they observed a spike of coronavirus cases in communities where Trump held large rallies that had no social distancing and few people wearing masks.Dr. Anthony Fauci, a fellow member of the White House’s coronavirus task force, has become increasingly vocal as he called for an “abrupt change” in the United States’ handling of the coronavirus in an interview with the Washington Post last week."We're in for a whole lot of hurt. EL CAJON (KGTV) -- Investigators are gathering clues to determine what caused a deadly single-car crash along a major roadway in El Cajon early Friday morning.The crash was reported at around 2:20 a.m. Friday by witnesses traveling to nearby pharmacy on Fletcher Parkway near Navajo Road. The witnesses, a woman and her young daughter, called 9-1-1 after discovering a wrecked white SUV fully engulfed in flames. According to El Cajon Police, the driver was heading westbound on Fletcher Parkway when they stuck a tree. The SUV immediately caught fire.The woman and other good Samaritans tried to pull the driver out of the burning vehicle.Crews arrived and also tried to rescue the trapped motorist but the victim died in the blaze.No information about the victim has been released at this time.Both directions of Fletcher Parkway near Navajo Road were closed as of 6 a.m. while officials continue their investigation. 928

(KGTV) - After a series of crashes over the summer, people in El Cajon are calling on the city to add some safety measures to the intersection of Magnolia Avenue and Renette Avenue."It's very dangerous," says Julia Reyes, who lives near the intersection. "We have a lot of families and kids crossing through here. We have two schools near here too.""It's a regular race track," says David Pina, who also lives on the corner. He recently replaced the fence in his yard because a suspected drunk driver plowed into it over Memorial Day weekend."We were all in the house and heard a big bang in the street and all of the sudden, boom, right in the yard," he says.The intersection has stop signs for cars headed East and West. There are also cones and left-turn restrictions in the middle of the intersection. Pina says that only makes it worse."That sign ends up in the street all the time," he says of the "No Left Turn" sign in the middle of the road. He adds that people ignore the cones and drive straight through the intersection illegally.Neighbors have asked the city to install traffic-calming measures. They think a stop sign, speed humps, flashing lights or a sturdier barrier could be a solution.10News reached out to the City of El Cajon to see if there have been any discussions about adding safety measures to the intersection. A spokesperson from the Department of Public Works asked us to submit a formal public records request. Because of the holiday weekend for Labor Day, the city has not had a chance to reply to that submission.For Pina, he hopes something can be done soon. He worries that the next crash may cost him more than just a fence."My grandson sleeps in that front room," he says. "You gotta worry about the kids. I if somebody did come through that fence and come into the house, there's no chance for anybody. Doctors say a Massachusetts construction worker’s love of black licorice wound up costing him his life. Eating a bag and a half every day for a few weeks threw his nutrients out of whack and caused the 54-year-old man’s heart to stop, according to a report Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. “Even a small amount of licorice you eat can increase your blood pressure a little bit,” said Dr. Neel Butala, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital who described the case. The problem is glycyrrhizic acid, found in black licorice and in many other foods and dietary supplements containing licorice root extract. It can cause dangerously low potassium and imbalances in other minerals called electrolytes.Eating as little as 2 ounces of black licorice a day for two weeks could cause a heart rhythm problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns.The death was clearly an extreme case. The man had switched from red, fruit-flavored twists to the black licorice version of the candy a few weeks before his death last year. He collapsed while having lunch at a fast-food restaurant. 1111
