SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pair of recent cyber-attacks on Southern California school districts has shown a new front in the war against computer criminals. Hackers have started to target schools and school districts for ransomware attacks."What they're looking for, ultimately, is money," says Kierk Sanderlin, the Head of Engineering for Check Point, a cyber-security firm.Sanderlin says the hackers will spend months using malware and fishing campaigns to gain access to computer systems. Then, when the time is right, they'll launch the ransomware attack, shutting down the system and demanding a ransom to restore access."They want to impact the environment in such a negative way, at such a critical time, that you will be willing to pay," says Sanderlin.Over the weekend, the San Bernardino School District had its servers shut down by a ransomware attack. And in August, San Dieguito Schools lost the ability for parents to register their students for classes because of an attack.Sanderlin says there have been 50 similar attacks on schools throughout the country in 2019.Sanderlin says the criminals typically want to make money from the ransom. But, he warns they can also use their access to the systems to steal the personal information of students, teachers and families.If they do that, Sanderlin says they can sell the information on the dark web, making people vulnerable to identity theft."All of that intellectual property, identification for student records, social security numbers, anything they can mine and sell on the dark web, they're going to do that," he says.School districts have become easy targets because many of them don't upgrade their cyber security frequently enough. Sanderlin compares it to fighting a modern war with antique weapons."We have to start treating cyber-security as something that's far more important than we have in the past," he says. "We can't be an ostrich sticking our head in the ground anymore. We have to realize this is important and do it the right way."He says parents need to become advocates for better cyber security, urging districts to invest in upgrades to protect their networks. He also advises people to use dark-web monitoring services. Those regularly scan the dark web to see if your personal information is for sale.Both San Bernardino and San Dieguito say their students' information was not stolen in the recent attacks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was hospitalized Saturday night after being stabbed several times during a confrontation in Mission Beach, police said.The incident happened around 8 p.m. in the 900 block of West Mission Bay, said Ofc. Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.Heims said a 26-year-old man approached and exchanged words with a 50-year-old man. The younger man then pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times."The victim fell to the ground and the suspect fled the scene," Heims said. "The victim was transported to the hospital where his injuries were determined (to be) non-life threatening."The suspect was caught a short time later and arrested. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A new alliance of San Diegans with a mission to end gun violence launched their new collation Tuesday night.More than 200 people were there for the formation of San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention, made up of four local chapter of national groups:  Brady Campaign, Moms Demand Action, Survivors Empowered and Sandy Hook Promise.”“We really think expanded background checks in every state would go a long way,” said Wendy Wheatcroft, the driving force behind the creation of the coalition. “California definitely has the strongest gun laws and should be an example to the rest of the country, and we’re hoping other states follow suit.”“I want to emphasize all the organization here’s support the second amendment, and we’re not trying to take anyone’s guns away,” Wheatcroft said.Michael Schwartz is with the San Diego County Gun Owners; he says the country before looking at gun laws. The country needs to take a hard look at the mental health system.“If you look at the mass shooting that made the headlines,” Schwartz said, “There have been mental health issues, they raised red flags, and no one was there to help.”Like President Trump, Schwartz also believes in exploring the idea of teachers packing heat.“If there is a teacher that is licensed and trained and wanted to protect themselves in the classroom, she shouldn’t be stopped by state law,” Schwartz said, “Her right to defend herself doesn’t end in the classroom.”  1470

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A group of activists are upset after the San Diego Police Department rescheduled a Black History Month celebration for the department's current and former black police officers.The department's celebration was scheduled to take place Saturday, February 24th, but was canceled just days before. The group says a committee of officers was appointed to plan the event in January. They think the cancellation was politically motivated. Monica Montgomery spoke during a brief press conference on Monday at the Civic Center Plaza. She thinks the decision to reschedule the event was made after the keynote speaker was announced. The speaker was supposed to be Geneviéve Jones-Wright, the candidate for San Diego district attorney. She's running against interim D.A., Summer Stephan. The police department told 10News the event was rescheduled due to planning conflicts. Lt. Scott Wahl said they plan on notifying officers when a new date is set. The D.A. sent 10News the following statement: "District Attorney Summer was not involved in the planning or the rescheduling of this event." 1143
