SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Metropolitan Transit System officials say ridership spiked in the first quarter of the 2020 fiscal year by more than a million trips compared to the same time last year.From July through September of 2019, 22,258,345 trips were taken on an MTS trolley or bus. In 2018, MTS saw 21,313,801 trips. It's a 4.4% rise from one year to the next."It's encouraging," says MTS Chair Nathan Fletcher.MTS officials say a heavy focus on investment over the past few years is starting to pay off. They recently completed a million plan to streamline services and add frequency to many bus routes. They also added the South Bay Rapid route from Otay Mesa to Downtown and expanded the Rapid Superloop service in the University City area."As we add those services where folks want them, as we squeeze every dime we can get out of our existing budget, as we make a full commitment to engage the community in what they want, people will use it," says Fletcher.The surge in riders helps MTS buck a nationwide trend where public transportation is on the decline.Even in San Diego, year-to-year numbers had been dropping for four straight years, since hitting a record high in 2015 (see chart above).Fletcher says it's a positive step as the city tries to meet strict climate goals that require a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.Recently, SANDAG put out a plan to increase transit ridership to 10%. That sparked a debate over how much money should go towards transit vs. road construction.Fletcher says any money spent on transit also benefits drivers."Every person who chooses transit is one less car driving," he says. "The individual who says, 'I'm always gonna drive,' should support transit because that means less congestion. Less congestion means less toxic pollution and less greenhouse gas emissions. So it's a win for everybody whether you use transit or drive your car."To raise money for more expansion, MTS is looking into a ballot measure for the November 2020 election that would add a half-cent sales tax. 2046

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and City Attorney Mara Elliott on Monday announced a new partnership that will help protect local families from gun violence.The local leaders said a program will be implemented to provide specialized gun safety training for 800 county social workers that deal with children and investigate child abuse.The training will be held virtually for these employees in the coming months. They want each of them to be familiar with gun violence restraining orders and San Diego’s Safe Storage of Firearms law -- two tools gun prevention advocates say are essential in keeping people safe.Carol Landale, with San Diegans for Gun Violence Prevention, said, “The more people who are aware of how to use a gun violence restraining order, as far as we’re concerned, the better. And this is not to say we’re coming after your guns. This is not what it’s about … We remove the gun on a temporary basis -- a temporary removal for a crisis and when the crisis is done the gun can be returned.”Officials say they’re doing this now because COVID-19 has limited the interaction between children and mandated reporters like their teachers or school counselors. So, they want to make sure social workers know of danger signs when they’re present.In a news release, Elliott said, “As pandemic-related stressors mount and children attend school at homes where parents are distracted by other responsibilities, protecting families from gun violence has never been more important. Our goal is to prevent unthinkable tragedies and ensure the safety of the social workers who continue to investigate the well-being of San Diego’s children during the pandemic. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans are bracing for another winter storm expected to bring rain and snow to the county Monday. The latest round of wet weather is expected to be the heaviest in San Diego County, bringing between half an inch to an inch of rain to the coast. According to the National Weather Service, parts of San Diego County could see heavy snow. RELATED: Check today's forecast in your areaA Winter Weather Advisory is scheduled to take effect for the mountains at 3 p.m. Monday and last until 12 p.m. Tuesday. The NWS says elevations will be between 5,000 to 5,500 feet for the region's mountains. Elevations above 5,500 feet could see between five and 10 inches of snow accumulation. “Highest amounts will be southeast of Big Bear in and around Mt. San Gorgonio, over Mt. San Jacinto, and over Mt. Laguna where locally up to a foot is possible,” the National Weather Service said. Meteorologists are warning about slippery roads in areas where snow is expected. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police announced Wednesday the arrests of two young men on suspicion of burglaries in Scripps Ranch and La Mesa.Joshua Guillen, 22, and Daniel Gomez, 18, were identified through photo recognition and D.N.A. evidence, police said.The Scripps Ranch burglary happened at a home on Red Cedar Dr. in May. 10News spoke with the homeowner, Bob Arban, who said he received an alert on his phone, indicating someone inside his home.RELATED: Owner watches burglary live on surveillance cameraSeveral items were stolen before police arrived.  Arban's home surveillance video was used to track down the suspects.Police said Guillen and Gomez were also identified in another residential burglary in La Mesa.  762

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County issued cease and desist orders to several businesses Monday after the county entered the state’s restrictive purple tier.According to the county, the orders were issued to several local restaurants, gyms, and yoga studios.The news came after Governor Gavin Newsom hit the brakes on economic activity, moving 28 more counties into the state’s most restrictive tier.The purple tier restricts capacity at retail businesses, closes gyms, and limits restaurants to outdoor-only service.Monday, Newsom forced 41 of California’s 58 counties to the purple tier.
